I’ve never had avocado

Around Christmas time there was a thread about what Christmas food people couldn’t get enough of and I remember stollen was very popular. So off I went to my local supermarket and picked up a bag of mini stollen bites... didn’t really like them but glad I tried them.

Now more to the point, a lot of people bang on about avocado on toast. I’ve never tasted avocado so before I go out and buy one only to dislike it I was wondering if anyone would be able to describe what it tastes like x

Haas Avacodo ( ripe ) mashed up with creme fraiche , on the side of a salmon fillet ( baked with soy sauce or a bit of lemon juice or white wine or just a bit of olive oil loosely wrapped in tin foil ) & a baked potato with butter and then peas - I defy anyone not to like this ( dietary requirement aside ) Grin

That said @BriocheBuns Phil Archer ( of the Archers R4 ) some years ago before he sadly died ) did say on one episode "I came late to avocadoes " - so you are not alone , albeit a fictional character.

Good tomatoes ripened in the sun of Southern France and warm from the stall - one slice of good white crusty bread toasted and topped with sliced tomatoes and popped for a minute under the grill, sprinkled with good salt (pink himalayan) and a scant teaspoon of fine balsamic vinegar. Ideally eaten on the terrace in the morning sun with a pot of coffee, the Pyrenees rising to the right and the sea glinting below. Sets you up for a wander into the village to sniff the heady scent of perfectly ripe melons and peaches waiting to be taken home and eaten later.

I love it , I usually have it mashed with ground pepper lemon salt on toast / bagel sometimes with poached egg or chicken

Oldraver · 11/01/2021 07:49

They are lovely but need to be at room temperature. I had a lovely breakfast once that was spoiled by chilled avocado

I think it may of been frozen

BaronessBomburst · 11/01/2021 08:33

Tomatoes definitely need salt!
That's why Marmite and tomato sandwiches are so good.

UpShutTheFuck · 11/01/2021 08:50

@BaronessBomburst

There's always one who comes along and ruins everything with marmite Angry

I love it on a chicken and bacon salad but on its own I find it a bit bland.

CormoranStrike · 11/01/2021 09:42

I like th3 best when fully ripe - then they are creamy, and savoury.

I love it mashed on hut buttered toast with a poached each in the side, with a little salt and pepper on top.

@RosesAndHellebores - you’ve just taken me on a little journey there, perfect on such a dull, grey Monday morning.

basilisk i full on cried when Phil died. Never really liked his character that much but good god what an episode.
Apols for derailing vital avo talk. (He would indeed have come late to them - pitch perfect writing there).

BasiliskStare · 11/01/2021 22:01

@HeronLanyon A woman after my own heart - there used to be an Archers chat website via the BBC - upon which I wrote

I came late to avacodoes
The late Phil Archer said
He'd have liked to try an Ugli fruit
But , alas , too soon , is dead

I stopped listening properly after Vanessa Whitburn threw Nigel off the roof one New Year to get ratings.

Anyway - enough derailing - back to avocados.
Lovely sliced with some mozzarella and tomatoes or indeed sun dried tomatoes

Bluntness100 · 11/01/2021 22:07

I’m not really a fan of quacamole, but I love avocado.

It’s like a soft creamy mild nutty flavour, it’s nothing like grass or bananas.

I find it too bland for just on toast

But avocado and prawn cocktail, in a a salad, or avocado in a sandwich, with say roasted peppers and mozzarella is the good of the gods.

Ninkanink · 11/01/2021 22:09

It’s not easy to get a good avocado in the U.K.

A perfect avocado is a heavenly thing. And as it happens we’re having avocado on toast tomorrow. 🤞

Stoneground granary bread, toasted. No butter (you don’t need it). Slice your avocado and place lovingly onto the toast. A good sprinkling of salt flakes and plenty of freshly ground black pepper. Nothing else is needed.

Crunchymum · 11/01/2021 22:11

Texture of lipstick, tastes of not much?

Kids love them and I don't mind them as guacamole.

formerbabe · 11/01/2021 22:12

I love avocado...I'd describe it as buttery soap.

I like it best with crispy bacon...I think the contrast of the creamy mild avocado with salty crispy bacon is perfection.

Ninkanink · 11/01/2021 22:13

And don’t even bother eating avocado if it’s not perfectly ripe!! Why would you do that?!

Year2021 · 11/01/2021 22:13

I've not had avocado but I've had guacamole and that tastes like shit

Ninkanink · 11/01/2021 22:14

Yes it is very good with crispy bacon.

Elphame · 11/01/2021 22:16

All avocados are not created equal

Waitrose avocados "ripe and ready to eat" are just that, they also stay ripe for ages.

Sainsbury's come next - ripe and ready to eat are usually too hard but when they do ripen they keep well

Tesco - hard when bought but ripen suddenly and go brown and nasty within hours

Asda - awful. Never had an edible avocado from them

Ninkanink · 11/01/2021 22:17

I haven’t had a perfect avocado since I was in South Africa years ago.

Managed to have one perfect mango a few years ago in a curry house - they’d had a shipment in direct from India and they tasted just as perfect as I remembered them from when I lived there years ago. A supermarket mango just doesn’t even come close. It’s the same with most avocados here - nowhere near as good as they should be.

katy1213 · 11/01/2021 22:17

I can remember looking at avocados and wondering what they'd taste like - but that was back in the 1960s and they were about the most exotic thing in the greengrocer's.
They were 34p in Tesco tonight - why don't you go wild and try one?
But don't judge stollen by that stale-tasting packet stuff in supermarkets!

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 11/01/2021 22:19

I absolutely hate avocado, revolting mushy things, but I acknowledge that I'm a fussy bugger, so I asked DH who will eat absolutely anything what he thought of them. He pulled a disgusted face and said,
"Eurgh, they're bloody horrible. Like eating slightly solidified wallpaper paste. They taste like shit too." Grin
