I've started a new one. Please join us and share the boring and mundane things happening in your world. It will be calming for all.

Happy Sunday, cold and snowy people of the thread. I'm just back from my run and cooling off a bit before my shower. I don't really need to cool off much as it's -8 and windy here, with snow expected on Tuesday.

I thought about using the exercise bike this morning instead of running, but I think I'll do a bike ride this afternoon. Running is a better cardio workout.

@Frownette - His old blazer did dry a bit funny but looked better after I ironed it. I'm still glad we got him the new one. The lining on the old one was torn and it just looked old and tired.

I'm listening to a very interesting podcast called Heaven's Gate. It's about an American cult back in the 1970s and '80s of that name who committed mass suicide. It was a really odd mix of fundamentalist Christianity and belief in UFOs. It's done by a journalist who was a member of a similar doomsday cult when he was growing up. I'm also watching an interesting docuseries on Netflix called Spycraft about the history and methods of espionage. I recommend them both of you're looking for some new entertainment.

I haven't got Netflix at present, I was thinking about it. Looks like at present in the UK you pay first month then get second month free, whereas I'd rather get first month free to see if I like it. Does DH do running as well?

It looked like snowing when I opened my curtains, but by the time I got downstairs it was rain, so it's just a bit soggy out. Sounds like lots of snow in some areas.

Sunbird24 · 24/01/2021 11:47

We also have snow, so I’m not going to try and drive my silly little car to the supermarket

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 24/01/2021 12:14

I have done my stationary bike ride this morning, watched by NDN who have to come out on their balcony to smoke.
Sleet has turned into ordinary rain.

Therainisback · 24/01/2021 12:18

We had snow yesterday - minus 2 when I went for my (slow but beautiful) run with DH. In good news I've lost 1lb this week, despite failing Dry January again and having wine last night.
Since my shower I've turned into a couch potato, although I was reading up on the fast 800 diet. I'm not sure I can do it ( being inherently greedy). I will ponder it. At least the Christmas chocolate mountain has gone, apart from some Spanish lemon turron that no-one likes.

HildaTablet · 24/01/2021 12:42

We have snow here, rather a lot of it. I went out and filled all the many bird feeders to the brim and the birds were all queuing up to get at them.

Our veg box did indeed arrive overnight, after I mistook the date, but the delivery man decided that having left it as instructed on the front doorstep it would be a good idea if he rang us to tell us it was there. At 04:30 🤦‍♀️

I’ve added a polite note to my account to say it’s fine to ring if they’re lost and can’t find the house but please don’t ring just to announce it’s been delivered, because we will, er, find it when we open the door AT A CIVILISED TIME (I just thought that last bit).

Frownette · 24/01/2021 13:01

Oh the time is surprising, are they usually erratic? Was it a good one??

Ah well at least it's here. I'm starting to feel like the only person in the UK where the sun is out. We're supposed to have snow 5pm though.

Champagneforeveryone · 24/01/2021 13:02

No snow here frownette and also sunny 😎

Frownette · 24/01/2021 13:04

champers we don't live too far away from each other!

HildaTablet · 24/01/2021 13:19

frownette I’ve just signed up for this box so it’s the first delivery but yes, it’s supposed to arrive any time from 7pm onwards, including overnight, so that’s normal I think - but they do say they won’t ring after 9pm so I sort of assumed that meant they wouldn’t ring in the wee small hours! Hopefully the new instructions will clarify. I suppose the delivery man, being awake himself, didn’t really stop to think that 4:30 is still actually night-time.

But unfortunately I’d had a bad night and had only dropped off at 03:00 so didn’t feel terribly overjoyed to have the phone wake me after an hour and a half Sad

It’s a good-value box though!

Nydj · 24/01/2021 13:22

I did online yoga and by the time we finished, it had started to snow here so all pretence of calmness and serenity went straight out the window! I love, love, love snow.

sproutsandparsnips · 24/01/2021 13:39

Lots of snow on the thread today! Snow here too, which I wasn't expecting - hope it's cleared by tomorrow for me to go to work and relieve the night shift.

Champagneforeveryone · 24/01/2021 13:43

Hmmph.
I too love snow and am seething not to actually have any Hmm

In tragic and unexciting news, the dishwasher has been on for a long time but is stone cold

Spudlet · 24/01/2021 14:17

Just had a takeaway Sunday lunch - roast beef, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and veg. It was 😋 We also have sticky toffee pudding, but we are out of room right now so are sitting blowing bubbles instead Grin

I hope more places continue to offer takeaway - eating out with DS is difficult as he has such a restricted diet at the moment. He had fishfingers and toast for his lunch 🙈 We I have decided to institute regular takeaways for morale, and have also added a bottle of Baileys (well, the Tesco version thereof) for the occasional splash in our coffee.

Frownette · 24/01/2021 14:21

@HildaTablet can you describe what's in it? I love a bit of veg porn Grin

MissConductUS · 24/01/2021 14:44

@Frownette, DH is also a runner, just not quite as disciplined about it as I am. Smile That's forgiven, as he fixed the display on my new stationary bike this morning. The cable that runs up to the display from the bottom of the frame had a plug on the end wasn't fully inserted into the receptacle. This was something that was supposed to be done at the factory. He pushed it forward a bit, it clicked into place and now everything works!

He is so handy, and I am so happy I won't have to try to return the whole bloody thing to amazon. I may just keep him. Grin

Frownette, Netflix asks for your payment method when you sign up so that they can start charging you automatically when the one month trial is over. Are you sure it's the second month they're offering for free? Just start with the basic six quid per month membership. You really get a lot of great entertainment for your money.

Walked 3 miles to Mass this morning through the light falling snow. Was planning to walk back but DH appeared to pick me up I was unreasonably cross about this and will need to apologise later for my ungracious acceptance of his kind gesture

DC spent nearly 2hrs playing in what little snow we had. Then a big family row blew up over lunch. It had been brewing for a while and has resulted in a number of actions for a number of us. We’ll see if anything actually changes...

Everyone seems to have calmed down, DH has taken them out with the sledges in search of more snow. We’re in the lee of a line of hills, so although all our snow is gone, we can see loads!

caringcarer · 24/01/2021 15:07

I am just so excited. I got back from Aldi picking up bits off shopping when my adult son came rushing out in snow. I thought to help me unpack, which he did, but also to tell me a person wants to have their cat re-homed as separating from his wife and going to live back at his Mum's who is allergic to cats and does not like them. Cat is 3 year old, neutered, Bengal. His partner is keeping.the 2 dogs but the cat was his. History, our very much worshipped Bengal girl, was stolen in September. Left us all heartbroken. We have 4 other cats but can't wait to have this one too. Son has just gone to fetch it now. I am at home waiting for it. Just so excited and hoping it will integrate with our other lovely cats. Can't stop smiling.

Frownette · 24/01/2021 15:08

Does DH not go to mass? So it takes you an hour to get there? Everyone has a little grump once in a while, all will be fine.

HildaTablet · 24/01/2021 15:11

Sure can, frownette, there's potatoes, carrots, French beans, two large red peppers, a head of celery, mushrooms in a brown paper bag, a mahoosive butternut squash, clementines, apples, and a mango.

That's a small (!) box. They're all things that are surplus or odd-sized and are basically rescued from potential food waste. The scheme's called Oddbox, I heard about it from a friend.

Spudlet · 24/01/2021 15:16

@HelenaJustina We too have had some tense moments this week. This lockdown is much tougher than either of the others, IMO - there’s no end in sight as there was in November, and the weather is appalling, unlike in March. And we’re all tired and worn down by it all. I don’t know anyone who isn’t struggling, in their own way.

I have told DH he must put time aside to go out by himself and exercise - I do this, and he needs to as well. And we’re going to rejig the morning routine so it’s easier for him to work. And we’re going to make an effort to have one nice thing to look forward to - a takeaway, a nice coffee, a bit of cake I didn’t have to bake. We need these little bright spots to anticipate and get us through.

Hope your action plans work out well.

HelenaJustina · 24/01/2021 15:35

@Frownette he does usually but at the moment he and DC have been attending virtually (reduced numbers allowed in Church) he’s not actually Catholic, but attends every week etc, couldn’t ask for more support in that way.

@Spudlet I know you are right, it was a whole bundle of frustrations from everyone. Some DC definitely aren’t pulling their weight/doing their fair share in age appropriate ways, and the back chat was reaching an unacceptable level. DH is feeling put-upon and is clashing with teenage DC he needs to read up on parenting teens!

We’ve spent so long in each other’s company (especially as we are already a group of 6) hopefully it’s let things off chests and next week resentment won’t build as much.

HelenaJustina · 24/01/2021 15:35

In dull news, I’m cleaning the kitchen, including tackling the microwave...

Silkiechickscat · 24/01/2021 16:01

Oh a bengal cat how lovely Caring I trust there will be a photo Grin

Just had a roast dinner and a glass of coke after having a nap. Had a bit of snow but think the BBC overmarketed it at heavy snow, its more of a light dusting.

Tomorrow has a big sun on the forecast but again I think the BBC are overpromising (maybe they are bored in lockdown too) as the high is 4C. Then they return to the more sensible and realistic forecast of rain everyday for the rest of January.

DH is eating his roast dinner and the cat has just said meow to him, eating chicken without sharing. Hmm The vet's renal diet was additional food DH. Wink

forgetthehousework · 24/01/2021 16:12

No snow here which I'm a bit disappointed about to tell the truth.
And I have no idea what we're going to have for tea.
