Arguments as sport, being the Devil's Advocate is my bloody calling.
This is why I love mn and why I loved uni (the second time - different kind of course first time)
I love debating things with people, I have friends and family with strong and varying opinions on many things, I've often had people that are new acquaintances be surprised that I have close friends who have very different ideologies to me but I value those people enormously for their honesty and their willingness to argue the points without it causing fall outs or hurt (most of the time)
I'm a staunch socialist, feminist, vegetarian, non smoking, rarely drink, never tried recreational drugs, tech loving, book loving, indoor preferring Middle Aged woman who has very dear friends who are:
Tory voting, meat loving, smokers, like a drink most weekends, a few cannabis users, tech haters, hate reading, love the outdoors inc hunting/shooting/fishing people...
They know my views I know theirs but these are all people I know and love.
One friend and I are both very strong with each other on politics and have very different ideas and we regularly debate quite publicly at times and people are a bit like "how can you argue like that and still be friends" and we're just like "cos it's not about the friendship, it's about our opinions on certain issues and we're able to hold opposing opinions without letting it affect the friendship"
Once at uni during a bit of a weird assignment a fellow student APPEARED to be "picking on me" or "goading me" about something but I knew him well and respected him and kinda twigged what was happening so went along but stayed in good humour, other students who weren't aware of our dynamic or believed the outrageous things he was saying started stepping in "for me" and we had to calm things down a bit after exchanging looks with each other and then there was a sort of "reveal" afterwards other students were like "so you were in on it"? And I was like "no, I just know him and what his real opinions are and kinda guessed what he was up to and went along with it, it was entertaining" and they were like
Verbal sparring! Love it!
