If you won the lottery, would you still work?

Hypothetical sadly, but just musing with my colleagues.
If you won the lottery, I'm talking mega multiple millions, would you still work?

For me, police officer, I think I would do what I want for the first year, travel etc, and then come back and be a Special Constable (volunteer but with the same powers). That way I'd still feel my training etc hasn't been for nothing and I do love my job, so would be bored soon without it I think.

I seem to be in a minority in that I really enjoy my job.

twinklespells · 02/01/2021 21:20

I would have said yes, part time, before I had DD. Now, no!!

Kittykatmacbill · 02/01/2021 21:22

Hahaha nope.

Wrenna · 02/01/2021 21:28

Yes, BUT I already work in a job that is in the charitable sector. We don’t use my job to pay bills, etc. I work there (at a pretty low wage too) because I believe in the cause, feel like I’m doing some good, and if they were to hire anyone else they would have to pay them more to do the job I do.

Drogonssmile · 02/01/2021 21:31

Yes part time, I enjoy it. But with the rest of my time I'd volunteer to foster rescue cats 🐈‍⬛

daisybrown37 · 02/01/2021 21:34

No. Would focus on the kids until the youngest was settled in to secondary school.

Maybe retrain or study something.

Lastbonestanding · 02/01/2021 21:37

Would I fuck?

Toffeefee23 · 02/01/2021 21:39

Hell no

LynetteScavo · 02/01/2021 21:51

No

I would never work again

I might invent my own self employed work to get even richer though Grin

Midnightstar76 · 02/01/2021 21:53

No

Miljea · 02/01/2021 21:55

There'd be a distant dot on the horizon where once there was a coalface HCP.

8-10 years ago, I would have said I'd go (more!) PT; but you know what? Now, you wouldn't see me for dust.

And I agree with the poster who suggests you have no imagination if you think you'd 'be bored' if you weren't working (in your current, non-millionaire job).

Try me!

MrsDThomas · 02/01/2021 21:55

Yes i would. I like my job and the people I work with. They’d be none the wiser if i did win as id not tell anyone .

Id be do bored at home. I’m bored now and itching to get back to a routine.

JoannaDory · 02/01/2021 21:57

Hello no! There are many other ways I would prefer to spend my time.

WaltzingTilda · 02/01/2021 21:58

Yes I would do some sort of work, just to keep my brain working and to contribute something to society . Not necessarily paid work, maybe volunteer at nspcc or similar.

OTannenbaum · 02/01/2021 22:07

Nope! Would jump at the chance to get off the rat race treadmill in my stressful job. I’d give myself at least two years before even thinking about doing anything other than just looking after myself well (cooking nice meals - or getting a personal chef 😂, exercising, sleeping plenty, having massages etc), enjoying having extra time to see friends and family, and enjoying life!

Then I might think about doing something constructive like setting up my own charity. I’d like to teach teenage girls how to look out for signs of domestic abuse. And weirdly I’d like to start my own business which would sell beautifully designed high quality imaginative toys and other children’s items at reasonable prices, and I’d treat my staff really well. And possibly set up my own theme park based on children’s books in the UK depending how much money we are talking about!

I feel I’ve given way too much thought to this unlikely scenario 😂

TicTac80 · 02/01/2021 22:12

If I won big money on the lottery, I’d buy a house and either continue to work...but I’d do it voluntarily if I could, reduce my hours slightly and work during term time only (I’m a nurse). I love the team I work with, and I love my job. OR I’d go back to uni to read medicine :) either way, I’d stay working in hospital. :)

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 02/01/2021 22:18

Not a chance. I hate the monotony, and I hate being relied on. I would do something, but on my terms, when I wanted to, not because I was expected too.

PhoebeSnow · 02/01/2021 22:19

@ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHave

I wouldn’t stay in my current job but would instead buy a house with lots of land, build massive luxury kennels that back onto fields and take in abandoned dogs so they could run free safely and play all day.
That’s what I would do too. Plus a lovely space for cats, and any other other animals in need of a home. I’d give money to Horse and donkey rescues as well, give money to charities that treat children with health problems, and support education for girls in various countries.
IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 02/01/2021 22:21

No but I’d use the new found time to take up a volunteer post at my preferred charity. I’d rescue lots more animals and maybe go self employed with a little business.

CrypticQueen · 02/01/2021 22:35
@CrypticQueen if you won millions you could travel the world with the dc and bring a teacher along... I know I would.I would bring them on Antarctic exploration ships, go to the galopagos islands etc etc! They would LOVE IT!!
Mine are teens - they would love that a lot less than you think!

Ltdannygreen · 02/01/2021 22:37

Yep, I’m only 33, I’d lose my sanity if I didn’t, these lockdowns have been torture if I’m honest. I’d give my earnings to charity though. If I win enough on the lottery why would I need more.

Kakiweewee · 02/01/2021 22:41

Nah, i keep myself well entertained without work. I'd want to do some charity work and spend time with family.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 02/01/2021 22:41

How much we talking? A million? Yes, I’d work. I mean, I buy a house outright for around £650 (3-4 bed, acre of land, London outskirts), invest the rest as a pension but one would need an ongoing income till such a date.

The Lotto Jackpot of, say £10 plus mill? Not a chance I’d work. Lovely.

The EuroMillions? Fuck that - I’d employ you to do my bidding on my private estate. Grin

pensivepigeon · 02/01/2021 23:33

There's a scientist isn the Eastern block somewhere but would need to look it up. He's researching glacial ice, permafrost. Wouldn't mind putting some money his way. Was on Channel 5 the other year.

Cherrysoup · 02/01/2021 23:41

Wouldn’t have time what with all my horses and dogs and land.
