If you won the lottery, would you still work?

Hypothetical sadly, but just musing with my colleagues.
If you won the lottery, I'm talking mega multiple millions, would you still work?

For me, police officer, I think I would do what I want for the first year, travel etc, and then come back and be a Special Constable (volunteer but with the same powers). That way I'd still feel my training etc hasn't been for nothing and I do love my job, so would be bored soon without it I think.

I would quit. I'm already planning to go to university as a mature student. A lot of the planning is about the need to remain working and earning while I study, and how I'd need to change jobs to facilitate this. So a lottery win would help a lot there.

As well as uni, I have other interests of mine that I can take up to ensure I'm still active. I'm a person who keeps a lot to myself, and I'm sure I can hide a win with vague stuff about new jobs and working from home.

I definitely want to learn to play the drums, and probably other musical instruments as well.

Figgyboa · 02/01/2021 17:04

Yes, I love my job, it incorporates my passion. Plus I would be bored without the mental stimulation.

jellybe · 02/01/2021 17:11

Yes. Though part time then volunteer the rest of the time (after going on some excellent holidays 😁)

GypsyLee · 02/01/2021 17:23

If it was enough, like millions, you'd be so selfish to continue.
Maybe donate money and help at a charity, but not to take a job off someone else.

SuperbGorgonzola · 02/01/2021 17:28

Surely that would depend on what your job was @GypsyLee ? I'm a teacher and I would hate to give my job up.

I think it would be so isolating and boring not working on something. I sometimes think I'd like to do more degrees for fun, but I think it would be too solitary if it was the only thing I had going.

maddiemookins16mum · 02/01/2021 17:28

A million yes, 130 million - no.

Sideorderofchips · 02/01/2021 17:29

Yes I love my job

But I would also be donating a large amount to my department anonymously to provide science equipment for the students.

KadyDarcy · 02/01/2021 17:32

Yes I'd leave my high paying stressful career that I love and be a florist

WhereDoMyBluebirdsFly · 02/01/2021 17:35

No way.

After a few months of holidays and contemplating my rich future, I would invest in an eco-friendly company or two, just so I would have a plausible 'back story' when people ask what I do. I would have good people actually running the companies, while I swanned in once a month or so in between facials and pilates sessions.

MistleTOEboughski · 02/01/2021 17:35

No I would like a little animal sanctuary in the country and that would keep me busy.

Changi · 02/01/2021 17:37

Not a chance.

DieSchottin93 · 02/01/2021 17:37

I would use my lottery winnings to start my own business Smile

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 02/01/2021 17:38

Yes I would, because I really believe in what I'm doing and I want to work towards shaping a fantastic service for the people we care for. I couldn't do that by quitting and volunteering.

Darkbloom · 02/01/2021 17:40

Not until my children grow up, I'd be a SAHM until they go to secondary then I might get a part time job just to keep me busy.

JorisBonson · 02/01/2021 17:44
@JorisBonson funnily enough I was the only one in the crew room who said I would stay in the police at least in some capacity, my Sgt called me a 'fucking do gooder ' Grin
We came up with a great scheme where one of the relief wins enough so that everyone could quit. I would love to see that.

Kez200 · 02/01/2021 17:45

Yes.

I do two main things and live them both.

One lends itself to working with charities or even creating my own charity. I would do that for free.

I would also continue the other one which I love as well.

Last year I made changes so I have 2 days minimum off a week. I would continue to make sure I had that time to myself still.

LER83 · 02/01/2021 17:57

I discussed this with my dh the other day. I'm a sahm so I would just continue with that, but dh said he would still work, not necessarily in the same field, but he would want to do something, maybe term time so we could go abroad every school holiday. 2 of our dc have autism and just wouldn't cope if we gave up everything and went travelling for long periods of time etc. Plus they all love school. But we will only just be 50 when our youngest is 20 so we will be free to do what we want then!

MeMarmiteYouJam · 02/01/2021 17:57

Yes, I would work, but I would start a few charities, apply to be a trustee for more charities, that sort of thing. So I would be busy, and feel like I was contributing to society, but on my own terms.

Pinkmagic1 · 02/01/2021 18:03

No way! I would spend my time riding my horses and holidaying in amazing places.
Might do some volunteer work for a charity such as riding for the disabled.

Thedarknightsaredrawingin · 02/01/2021 18:10

I would continue with consultancy work in a reduced capacity and offer my services for free to third sector organisations several times a year.

I would take all school holidays off and never work more than a three day week.

fluffi · 02/01/2021 18:12

No. Definitely stop work! I'd have time to study (would love to study psychology), learn to play some more muscial instruments properly (flute, violin), spend more time with family, read and do all the things I never get time to do when working!

thecatsthecats · 02/01/2021 18:16

Nope.

I would devote myself fully to writing and use my money to take writing courses, hire an editor and either earn a publishing contract or self publish.

Interspersed by traveling and doing up houses.

I have few material wants, so could happily backpack and would buy a modest house outright.

Nhsisfucked · 02/01/2021 18:20

I’d probably leave my job to make space for someone else who would need the wage but definitely do something. 10 years as a SAHM was boring enough so couldn’t do nothing.

Sarahandduck18 · 02/01/2021 18:20

I’d set up a charity and work on that during school hours/part time.

Plus study/campaigning etc.

Camomila · 02/01/2021 18:21

I'd do a PhD and then set up my own NGO/charity (focusing on women's employment issues)
