If you won the lottery, would you still work?

Hypothetical sadly, but just musing with my colleagues.
If you won the lottery, I'm talking mega multiple millions, would you still work?

For me, police officer, I think I would do what I want for the first year, travel etc, and then come back and be a Special Constable (volunteer but with the same powers). That way I'd still feel my training etc hasn't been for nothing and I do love my job, so would be bored soon without it I think.

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter I am talking about not wanting to retre now, during a pandemic, not when things are "normal".

When I have the freedom to come and go and there are no restrictions then I will travel, volunteer, join clubs and societies, none of which are possible right now.

Winning mega multiple millions - managing that amount of money would probably be a big enough job as it is!
I’d set up some kind of foundation to donate money and employ some of my friends to look for charities they think deserve money.
So I would give up work, I have loved my job and industry but after 23 years, I’d be happy to stop and hang out with my dog.
If I won only a million (only! 😂) I’d probably have to keep working. But seeing as I only won a couple of quid, I will definitely have to keep working.

@Etulosba

I still don't understand why anybody would assume that their retirement is going to be like a continuation of lockdown or anything near. You will be able to leave the house, volunteer, socialise and travel. Surely even the most pessimistic of pessimists doesn't believe the current covid restrictions will go on forever.

I'm not even 60 but I simply have too much I want to do and work just gets in the way. I don't even dislike my job.

Exactly.

I've spent the past two weeks off writing my book. Which means four hours of writing, and two hours drawing artwork for it or planning etc. I've actually found that there's still not enough time in the day for everything I want to do, and it's all completely self-driven.

Oh i see.
But a lot of people are furloughed at the moment too- so they arent occupied by work either so they are in exactly the same boat as the retired lol
I'd still love to win the lottery during lockdown- i can think of lots I'd do even with the restrictions

I wouldn't say no to a lottery win, but in the current situation I will carry on working part time. I get the best of both worlds Grin

I’d volunteer to some extent; I’d like to build web presence (web sites, social media) for charities in my areas of interest (mostly animal related).

I’d also create an investment fund where profits outside of inflation could be used for donations to small charities. I’d skip the Oxfams, the RSPCAs etc, but instead look at the small ones like local rescues, fundraising to build accessible playgrounds for disabled children, etc The ones where children need help to walk but the op is only available in the US etc

I’d like to travel too - but won’t leave the DCats so that might take more planning (hiring a cruise cabin on a ship that accepts cats for a year?)

No!

SeldomFollowedIt · 10/01/2021 18:28

No I wouldn’t work.

I was advised to think of what “job” I would do if I won the lottery, and apply that to my life now. (So work for joy, rather than it being a daily grind) I’m currently a teaching assistant and I hate it. HATE HATE HATE.

Anyhow, I really wouldn’t work at all if I won the lottery so this little piece of advice didn’t work.

justwanttobemum · 10/01/2021 19:00

Absolutely no hope in hell I'd do my current job! But I think eventually I'd get a bit fed up so would do something. Would be lovely to do something meaningful or fulfilling snd not worry about the money.

Deereamer · 10/01/2021 20:15

No I wouldn’t work. I’d go and walk dogs at my local animal rescue centre.
