If you won the lottery, would you still work?

Hypothetical sadly, but just musing with my colleagues.
If you won the lottery, I'm talking mega multiple millions, would you still work?

For me, police officer, I think I would do what I want for the first year, travel etc, and then come back and be a Special Constable (volunteer but with the same powers). That way I'd still feel my training etc hasn't been for nothing and I do love my job, so would be bored soon without it I think.

I was semi retired when I came into several inheritances and did well with investments but I carried on working part time as I enjoyed the company of others.

However, a few years later I became unwell and had to completely retire.

It’s great in one hand but I miss working and I understand that for some who win the lottery the familiarity of a routine, the love of their job and the camaraderie from work colleagues they may have worked with for years and saw more than their own family are compelling reasons to not give up theirs job.

A classic example of it all going wrong was that larger couple who won big gave up these jobs and then split up. I can’t think of their names. He is ginormous and she has awful hair extensions! Confused

OldWomanSaysThis · 02/01/2021 16:32

Hell Fuck No.

But it really depends on how much money. I'm in the States, so it would have to be A LOT of money due to the medical expense issue. Our govt keeps Americans in jobs by tying health insurance to employment. You don't quit your job. You quit your medical insurance.

bobbikato, it certainly is very easy to fill time if you don't work. Exercise every day. Yes, I do that. Run for just over an hour and walk. It does take time up and you feel like an athlete. More time and resources devoted to it would definitely be enjoyed for a lot of people.

Add in baths, meals out, some land, some property, looking after animals / wildlife and you'd have a pretty full day I reckon!

Ruddyfedup · 02/01/2021 16:36

Im ex job and currently in the control room. Id buy the big house, set DH up with his own garage, holidays and cars etc and probably would quit the control room and special instead when ive had a bit of time off. I loved being a PC but for the stuff you actually join up for and i see specialing as getting to do that. Plus i need to be around people and being busy so would work out quite nicely

Yup- I agree. I can easily fill my day with non work things. Easily.

If you enjoy working and want to continue then great! But the idea that work is the ONLY thing in life you can fill your time with is a really sad depressing thought to me. I have so many things I want to do but cant due to being at work.

We had this conversation at work and the general feeling was everyone would come back after the win. Only till such time as they had had enough fun telling certain people what they really thought of them and their constant impossible unreasonable requests. 😊

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 02/01/2021 16:40

Absolutely not . I hate my job and most of the people in it
I’d tell them I’d won the lottery too and to stick their jobs up their arses . Vile individuals

speakout · 02/01/2021 16:41

Yes, because my hobby is also my work.

PattyPan · 02/01/2021 16:41

I would but I would go part time. Meanwhile I would buy loads of land and learn how to manage/run an organic farming business and nature reserve. I’d probably end up working 2 days a week at my current job, 2-3 days on that - obviously employing people to do the day to day running of the farm and rangers for the reserve etc.

moolady1977 · 02/01/2021 16:42

Had this conversation with my dd this morning and I said no but I'd buy a b&b in Scotland and get my DD to manage it .

Baycob · 02/01/2021 16:42

No.

I would breed dogs and horses and take holidays 4 times a year.

BrowncoatWaffles · 02/01/2021 16:42

I would but I'd quit my current job in grand style and take great pleasure as to how up shit creek it would leave my current boss (he who, because I freelance from home, expects me to be available to do stuff at any point seven days a week up to 11pm at night and using my elastic 15 hours a week because 'flexibility works both ways').

I'd work elsewhere though, I'd just pick my contracts and only work for people I actually like!

LowestEbb · 02/01/2021 16:43

@GellerYeller

My colleague told me that the national lottery pay out less unless you go public- is that true?? I've always wondered why ever people would go to the press etc

Yes but only if I could get a job on my terms eg 1 or 2 days a week and less exhausting than current role. To be honest, probably not.

bobbikato · 02/01/2021 16:50
@bobbikato

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying? are you saying the ONLY way to stop boredom or to occupy your time is to continue working then? thats the ONLY way?

I disagree and many, many people dont really enjoy their jobs anyway so not sure how working in a cubicle from 9-5 every day would bring happiness if you dont enjoy it and you dont have to
Sorry for rant -I am not saying keep working in a hateful job but the examples given could be worse .
Other ideas like planting trees could be okay but the charity world is full of millionaire ladies opening animal santuaries - have you ever noticed just how many hollywood actress head up a donkey home its a lot for a small group .
Yes to a small cafe in the costwolds where you could waffe in once a week - but again lots of celebs do this - the trade hates them - so you may get some stick .

SameToo · 02/01/2021 16:52

Yea but I wouldn’t take a wage, wouldn’t do it full time and would deffo cherry pick the best work Grin I love working, my job is my passion and hobby 🤷‍♀️ But if I were super rich I wouldn’t want to be paid for it and deprive someone else of a job.

fussychica · 02/01/2021 16:53

No. I gave up work years ago so it would just enhance my retirement.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 02/01/2021 16:53

@bobbikato

Ah I see what you mean.

I get what you are saying but considering the amount of self obsessed pointless celebrities in existence (eg the kardashian clan to name but one) I at least admire someone who sets up a donkey sanctuary and is actually helping others with their money.

We have enough vapid, privileged celebrities who do nothing more than pose their duck faces on Instagram so anyone who is at least trying ti help is a good egg in my opinion.

bloodywhitecat · 02/01/2021 16:54

Foster parent, yes I would still work (foster, I foster babies so am not allowed to work outside the home and still foster)

GellerYeller · 02/01/2021 16:54

@LowestEbb I do know some people who won and were advised they ought to go public due to living in a close knit community making it impossible to keep it discreet when the stopped working and got nicer cars etc. Not sure it affected the payout. I think they don't give legal/financial advice or access to support if you choose no publicity.
We know someone who got enough to pay the mortgage and hasten retirement by a couple of years. Initially they told people they'd had an inheritance just enough for the mortgage to stop any bad feeling in their family about sharing the money. Obviously they gave some away under pain of silence!

PegasusReturns · 02/01/2021 16:57

I too always marvelled at the wouldn’t you be bored crew. However I financially no longer need to work. I had some time off, did some stuff I wanted to do and then I went back to work, I like what I do, it’s really interesting and I love the challenge.

rookiemere · 02/01/2021 16:58

No danger. Work during the last few months of wfh has become intolerable and I'm 50. I'd do a part time degree in creative writing and a bit of volunteering plus lots and lots of travelling.

Squigglypig2 · 02/01/2021 16:59

If you'd asked me this 5 years ago it would have been a yes, no though it's a definite no. I would probably try for Trustee/Board positions to feel like I wa being useful though.
