What are you a snob about?

I would say for me soda , can't buy the cheap versions of coke.

OP posts:

Not snobbery, but just prefer the taste of certain things.

Baked beans - Heinz
Cornflakes - Kelloggs
Mayonnaise - Hellmans or Morrisons (cheap as chips and I'm convinced is actually Hellmans)

Can anyone really be 'snobby' about gravy granules? Surely everyone makes gravy á la Jamie Oliver on their aga stove top using the juices of the freshly cooked beef from the cow that they reared organically themselves? 😜

Sittinbythetrees · 26/12/2020 08:39

Cashmere. Bone china mugs for tea, I can’t bear a mouth full of pottery.
But mostly manners, especially eating nicely.

pictish · 26/12/2020 08:39

Agree about cheap man made fabrics. Polyester etc.
Also leather shoes...but canvas is ok.
Would far rather 5 items of quality cotton clothing over 10 cheap items. Would have 1 pair of decent leather boots over three pairs of fashion boots.
I don’t have a lot of clothing it’s true to say...but the stuff I do wear fits well and is robust.

When the restaurants shut I started shopping in m and s food hall for treats. Now instead of Lidl then a few treats in m and s it’s the other way round I only go to Lidl for basics. Everything at m and s is just so much nicer. Really noticeable. My eyes have been opened. Hate Lidl now.

AlternativePerspective · 26/12/2020 08:44

Agree re gravy. Have no idea why anyone would want to use granules, they even taste synthetic.

Most other ready-made food. Ready meals, pot noodle just why?

Low sugar/artificial sweetener anything...

Jar sauces. A can of chopped tomatoes, an onion and some garlic tastes better than a jar of dolmio and doesn’t contain the numerous preservatives/additives/salt/sugar which ready-made does.

So I think it’s fair to say I am a food prep snob.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 26/12/2020 08:45

Cars. We only have BMWs. Slightly ashamed of that one as its a biggy to be a snob about but in my defence a family member sells BMWs for a living and we get very good deals! Blush

Also, guitars. We both play and have very nice guitars. Grin

PigletJohn · 26/12/2020 08:49

Prime Ministers.

Must be Old Etonians with Oxbridge degrees.

Competence and honesty not required.

No, come to think of it, that's not right.

plannit · 26/12/2020 08:53

HP brown sauce or nothing.
Ground coffee- instant is evil.

Frouby · 26/12/2020 08:54

Bedding, got to be decent quality Egyptian cotton.

Food, doesn't have to be snobby but it does have to be as ethical as possible and not a fan of beige freezer food.

Value, I don't mind cheap or expensive but it has to be good value. So something that goes funny after 2 washes isn't good value no matter how cheap, but something expensive that does 3 years is good value.

Treeerex · 26/12/2020 08:54

I refuse to set foot in Lidl and Aldi.
I do shop in Asda and Iceland though. Mainly because they offer online and scan as you shop. So it's less about the price and more about convenience.

As I've gotten older, I've become more of a snob about make up and beauty products. Clothes as well. I think in your youth, you can get away with cheap make up and only need a basic moisturiser etc. But as you get older, you need better quality. I remember a colleague saying the same when they were in their 40s and I was a young, naive 25 year old.

AlternativePerspective · 26/12/2020 08:55

@EddieVeddersfoxymop I am a keyboard player and IMO anything not Yamaha is substandard... Grin

TornadoOfSouls · 26/12/2020 08:56

PigletJohn
Lol!

RettyPriddle · 26/12/2020 08:58

Flowers. I hate crap flowers.

Flowerblue · 26/12/2020 09:01

Tea bags - clipper organic - as the tea tastes good and the bags are unbleached.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/12/2020 09:06

Fake houseplants. They look shite.

LadyWithLapdog · 26/12/2020 09:06

I used to be a snob about books. Then I ran out of space and had to move to kindle.

I also used to be a snob about leather & wool. Then I became a vegan and I shudder at the thought. I am going to wear out the old items but I haven’t bought anything new in years.

I was a total snob about AI package holidays till we went on one. It was just the right thing at the time.

I’m still a snob about political views.

Bearlyclearly · 26/12/2020 09:07

I hate costume jewellery I’d rather have 1 piece of silver or gold than something cheap and plasticky.

Coca Cola Diet Coke, Heinz for ketchup and beans, the red tractor logo on meat.

LadyWithLapdog · 26/12/2020 09:09

@Fluffycloudland77. Regarding fake houseplants. I haven’t got them but I’m increasingly inclined towards them, at least to consider them as an alternative to air miles. Obviously not some cheap plastic tat flown in from far away. I’m more open to the idea now.

LadyWithLapdog · 26/12/2020 09:10

The red tractor logo is not all it’s cracked up to be

Chicchicchicchiclana · 26/12/2020 09:12

People drinking in the street. Adults taking their children to pubs.

AverageContents · 26/12/2020 09:16

Names. Tyler and anything ending in Mae.

Putting shopping bags anywhere other than the floor. NOT kitchen worktops, thank you!

Personalised registration plates.

Uggs.

Matching family pyjamas.

Referring to "Mum and dad", not "My mum and dad", unless you're actually siblings.

Buying pets from breeders or pet shops.

Adults who count in number of sleeps.

'Cute' filters on selfies.

Hubby, hubster etc.

Roussette · 26/12/2020 09:18

Tea. Only use loose leaf tea, the difference in taste is amazing, when I go to someone's house and it's tea bags, I can barely drink it.

People who don't hold their cutlery properly. Either holding their knife like a pencil, or holding knife and fork upright the whole time.

Gravy granules, never used them and my gravy is world famous Grin

Cheap sausages like Richmond ones. Have to check what's in my sausages and the meat content. Can't eat those ones that are like meat paste in thick skins

farawayplanet · 26/12/2020 09:19

Reading a decent newspaper. Can't be doing with Sun, Mirror, Mail etc.

daisychains8 · 26/12/2020 09:19

Coffee,
If it's instant then I'd rather have tea.

christmascarly · 26/12/2020 09:21

Knitwear. I have collected it over the years and now pretty much only own cashmere.

Art - try to buy original pieces rather than generic prints. Again, this has been a long work in progress.

Travel - hate mass market ai holidays but there are absolutely some gems to be had and the convenience (usually) of booking this way shouldn't be underestimated. Had one of our best ever holidays last year through TUI. The key ime is avoiding the big, cheap, "family friendly" seafront places in high rise resorts which cater mainly to the British.

Food - no thanks to McDonald's, Wetherspoons, kfc and the like. I'd rather eat at home.
