Love Actually - yes or no?

I fancy watching something festive, and I’m wondering about watching LA. I saw it 10+ years ago, and wasn’t keen, but I have had gin and am feeling quite chilled.

So, LA, yes or no? And if no, can I have some cheesy Christmas film recs, please? (I loved Last Christmas and the three Netflix prince films.)

Thanks.

Fuck no. Horrible film. Why is it so popular?

DuchessMinnie · 10/12/2020 18:57

Last Christmas and the Holiday are both better Smile

FizzyPink · 10/12/2020 18:58

Yessss I love it! Christmas films we’ve watched recently are The Holiday, Jingle Jangle, Christmas with the Kranks, Jingle all the way and Nativity

TidyOmlette · 10/12/2020 18:58

Yes yes yes! God I love it. Watch it every Christmas (I appreciate I’m quite sad😂)

PussyMalanga · 10/12/2020 18:59

Dreadful schmaltzy film.

EternalOptimist7 · 10/12/2020 19:00

Love Actually is fab! We watch it every year & it’s so heartwarming. Don’t understand why people diss it!

HerFlowersToLove · 10/12/2020 19:02

I hate it. The difference between the portrayal of men and women in it is shocking.

BlueSkies2020 · 10/12/2020 19:03

Nativity is excellent! My child watches it on repeat and I don’t mind... it’s quite funny and sweet

Love actually is morally dubious and leaves me uncomfortable. Stalker man after his best friends wife. Posh man beds his cleaner who doesn’t speak any English. Another man cheats on his wife and she forgives him.

It wouldn’t have been made in the post me too world.

Because it's inherently horribly sexist?
lexloofah · 10/12/2020 19:06

I really do not like that film. I rewatched it last year as I felt it was surely me if everyone else loved it but nope, still hated it. It's like several half baked ideas that wouldn't make a whole film on their own were thrown together with some London scenes and snow. Hey presto, a Christmas film and the Americans will eat it up too! And they made Alan Rickman such a sad sack middle aged cliche and he made Emma Thomson cry! Bah - humbug!

On my own I would watch the holiday, with DH I would watch bad Santa or Bad Moms Christmas, with DCs I Would watch Christmas Chronicles

Pinkroses87 · 10/12/2020 19:08

There’s a Jezebel (I think) that absolutely murder love actually. V funny.

Pinkroses87 · 10/12/2020 19:09

Jezebel article!

Yippeeforme · 10/12/2020 19:09

It's all about people cheating on/with each other, and the death of a wife and mother, and the young son pursuing a crush while his father struggles with his grief. Festive eh? 😛

Changedmynameagain1 · 10/12/2020 19:10

Yes

WarmSausageTea · 10/12/2020 19:13

Thanks for all the comments, I think I’ll give LA a miss today.

I liked Nativity (and 2), but hated the Holiday. Admittedly, I was in a bad mood and tired, so I missed a chunk of it, maybe I should give it another go.

Some interesting suggestions, will definitely a give them a look.

Really? Have you paid attention to it?

katy1213 · 10/12/2020 19:25

Horrible. That foul-mouthed girl from EastEnders.

nosswith · 10/12/2020 19:27

Just no.

Stalkers are recognised as unpleasant nowadays.

Holothane · 10/12/2020 19:27

No just tripe. Yet I loved Happy Season.

Roselilly36 · 10/12/2020 19:29

We watch love actually every year, part of Xmas for us.

teateateateateamoretea · 10/12/2020 19:29

Keira Knightly was 17 making that film. And that's one of the least objectionable things about it

Piwlyfbicsly · 10/12/2020 19:30

I always loved it, watched it many times. I don't get all the hate.

Plonque · 10/12/2020 19:31

I'm watching Die Hard tonight!
It's part of my "set" of Christmas films I have to watch - as is Love, Actually, The Holiday, any form of the Christmas carol films (this year was the muppets c c) family stone, home alone, elf.

Lesser known ones I've enjoyed are Christmas with the Coopers, let it snow (Netflix) princess switch. There are loads of Christmas films in Netflix.

Squirrelblanket · 10/12/2020 19:32

People who don't understand why LA is shit need to read this: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/jezebel.com/i-rewatched-love-actually-and-am-here-to-ruin-it-for-al-1485136388/amp

SummerHouse · 10/12/2020 19:33

Re love actually. He is not a stalker. He is in love with her. He tells her so with no expectations of anything coming from it. Then he walks away.

I think it's a brilliant film. I love it, actually.
