Love Actually - yes or no?

WarmSausageTea · 10/12/2020 18:56

I fancy watching something festive, and I’m wondering about watching LA. I saw it 10+ years ago, and wasn’t keen, but I have had gin and am feeling quite chilled.

So, LA, yes or no? And if no, can I have some cheesy Christmas film recs, please? (I loved Last Christmas and the three Netflix prince films.)

Thanks.

lockedownloretta · 10/12/2020 19:35

@Honeybobbin

It's great. People on here will tear anything apart.
Or maybe they just see the film differently to you.
Clawdy · 10/12/2020 19:42

The Jezebel article is trotted out every single year on here. Love Actually is the only time DD and I sit together enjoying the same film, so each Christmas we look forward to it.

Manteo · 10/12/2020 19:43

I love it. It's not cool to say that though.

ChristmasWitch · 10/12/2020 19:44

I can't be bothered to read so much into a film tbh. I love it, I just watch it to enjoy it not dissect every character.

Suzi888 · 10/12/2020 19:46

Love LA, the holiday, national lampoon Christmas vacation, Elf, Christmas with the kranks, scrooged, Christmas chronicles Xmas Wink
All of them!

Poppyolive90 · 10/12/2020 19:48

I think it’s great. Last Christmas was the worst film I have ever seen. The Holiday is a nice film too for Christmassy watching, or You’ve got mail

Pogmaasal · 10/12/2020 19:48

I hadnt thought of it as sexist before, all I knew is that I watched it once and really didn't get why everyone raved about it, including my mum.

I loved Last Christmas - it's one of those films that you walk away saying "it was fine but not amazing" but then you end up craving to watch it again!

SlopesOff · 10/12/2020 19:50

I like it. Well, some of it. Bill Nighy especially.

However, I loathe the cheating asshole.

I watch it if I know it is on TV, if the option is to watch The Holiday, I turn it off, that truly is awful.

smismas · 10/12/2020 19:51

Far from your tradition Christmas movie, but try 'The night before'. It's brilliant. (Not for children though!)

SummerHouse · 10/12/2020 19:57

Read the article. It was really very funny. I still love love actually.

Anything as shite as this mawkish misogynistic bullshit, yes. I mean, how Chrismassy. lets sit down as a family and watch one dude stalk his best friends teenage wife, one bereaved dad teaching his stepson to be a mini stalker, the horrible twat backpacking for casual sex, the simulated porn, the prime minister chasing the "fat" secretary, the cheated on wife who says nothing, and the martyr sister. Eugh. Happy family movie...not Hmm

MyristicaFragrans · 10/12/2020 20:01

While You Were Sleeping is a good Christmas film.

Well, you know ‘good’ for a Christmas romcom sort of thing.

GreenClock · 10/12/2020 20:03

Great cast, some good comedy moments (“Ant or Dec”, and Julia Davis being called out as a mediocre caterer), that wonderful scene from Emma Thompson when she smooths the bed, trying not to cry.

Otherwise, it’s poor.

AuntyCandthefishfingersandwich · 10/12/2020 20:10

If my 12 yr old DD can spot the blatant misogyny in nearly every scene why can't others.

Howmanysleepsnow · 10/12/2020 20:32

Get Santa is funny. Elf is a must watch in our house, as is A Christmas Carol. I also love It’s a Wonderful Life. And Love Actually (sorry!)

WarmSausageTea · 10/12/2020 20:40

I’d completely forgotten Elf, might save that for Sunday afternoon. DP loves It’s a Wonderful Life, and I really don’t, but I should give it another try.

Just watched 12 Men of Christmas, which was very cheesy, but I love Kristin Chenoweth, and Montana (assuming it was filmed and not just set there) is gorgeous.

FurrySlipperBoots · 10/12/2020 20:50

The only thing I don't like about Love Actually are 2 of Emma Thompson's lines, to the bereaved chap,

'...doesn't mean I'm not terribly concerned that your wife just died...'

and

'Get a grip. No one's ever going to shag you if you cry all the time'

Really hideous.

I'm also a bit on the fence that he and another woman are 'twinkling at each other by the end. His wife was buried less than a month ago! But I can suspend disbelief for that. On the whole I love the film, and watch it every year

I don't think it's for you though OP! How about 'It's a Wonderful Life'?

BashfulClam · 10/12/2020 20:58

It’s acceptable Christmas cheese..Home for Christmas is a nice wee 6 part mini series on Netflix.

CockleburIck · 10/12/2020 21:11

Revolting. I hate Richard Curtis films.

Pogmaasal · 10/12/2020 21:13

@MyristicaFragrans Id forgotten about While You Were Sleeping - I love that film, brings back lovely memories and has a nice ending

youvegottenminuteslynn · 10/12/2020 21:14

This is one of my favourite articles about a film EVER. Finally I realise it's not just me who sees Love Actually for what it is - misogyny in wrapping paper. Uuuuugh it's the worst!
