Love Actually - yes or no?

I fancy watching something festive, and I’m wondering about watching LA. I saw it 10+ years ago, and wasn’t keen, but I have had gin and am feeling quite chilled.

So, LA, yes or no? And if no, can I have some cheesy Christmas film recs, please? (I loved Last Christmas and the three Netflix prince films.)

Thanks.

it's my absolute fave and I watch it every Christmas

Charcutaria · 14/12/2020 16:24

@onlythepianoplayer

I stand corrected then, to be honest I didn't read all of the thread, I couldn't be arsed with all the angst. Same old, same old shit year in year out

so it's a case of "I don't personally give a shit, but I'm going to take time out of my busy day of nor giving a shit to tell you all how pathetic you are that you do give a bit of a shit"?
Cos that's not a waste of time at all Hmm

Hmm

I gave up partway through the Jezebel article. It was poorly written and over used unnecessary expletives. The points could have been made with half the word count. There are plenty of other anti Love Actually articles which could be linked to for the Christmas 2021 thread.

Babdoc · 14/12/2020 16:31

Among my many criticisms of LA, most of which have been mentioned already upthread, I hated the trivialised portrayal of bereavement. I was widowed young, and I was sickened watching the supposedly grief stricken Liam Neeson fall for Claudia Schiffer ten days after his wife’s fucking funeral.
Ditto the child who supposedly was unperturbed about losing his mother as long as he could get off with the cool girl at school.
The film was cruel, shallow, sexist, and didn’t have the first clue about the true meaning of love.

CorianderQueen · 14/12/2020 16:36

Holidate is pretty good

Bluesheep8 · 14/12/2020 17:01

*Really worried about someone having a different opinion? confused

Is that a joke?*

No it isn't. Person A doesn't like a film and states the reasons why. Person B likes it. Person A is then "Really worried" about person B.

shinynewapple2020 · 14/12/2020 17:25

I like it but it's not popular on here

onlythepianoplayer · 14/12/2020 17:28

No it isn't. Person A doesn't like a film and states the reasons why. Person B likes it. Person A is then "Really worried" about person B

and you think thats because they have a different opinion? And not that the pp was saying that your choice of favourite film says something about a person, and what having LA as your favourite film says about you is in no way good?

pringlebells · 14/12/2020 17:32

Yessssss

TheGremlinsAreComing · 14/12/2020 17:47

Reading this thread has really changed my mind about how much I love this film.

Oh wait.. no it hasn't Grin

Seriously get over it, it's a film ffs. If you don't like it, just don't watch it!

Afishcalledwonderful · 14/12/2020 17:49

Bit late to the party but one of my favs is a cheesy film on True Movies called The Christmas Card. It's on every year and I love it. But the ultimate has to be Die Hard Smile

Afishcalledwonderful · 14/12/2020 17:50

ps not a fan of Love Actually either - especially Keira and the 'I bought pie' scene Hmm

onlythepianoplayer · 14/12/2020 18:01

Seriously get over it, it's a film ffs. If you don't like it, just don't watch it!

Or we can talk about how much we hate it, if we like. Seriously, if you don't like it, just don't read it!!

Hmm
MrsDThomas · 14/12/2020 18:01

Typical Mumsnetters, analysis every fucking moment of a film.

Its make believe.

onlythepianoplayer · 14/12/2020 18:02

yes but its really shitty misogynistic make believe.

BTW, its not over analysing, its just called thinking. Clearly not a pastime for many here.

TheGremlinsAreComing · 14/12/2020 18:07

Some people don't seem to be able to grasp the concept of make believe it seems. If it was supposed to be true to life it would be a documentary.

EllenRipley · 14/12/2020 18:10

@Pinkroses87

There’s a Jezebel (I think) that absolutely murder love actually. V funny.
@Pinkroses87 I was just thinking about that! Bloody brilliant piece of film deconstruction. Everyone should read it if they're even thinking of watching/rewatching.

It's one of the shittest, laziest movies ever made. Apart from 'that scene' with Emma Thompson.

Christmassequins · 14/12/2020 18:57

Seriously get over it, it's a film ffs. If you don't like it, just don't watch it!

I find this attitude depressing. Did people in the 70s watch lazy racist stereotypes being portrayed on TV and instruct black people to 'get over it'? Why would anyone, particularly women, think lazy sexist stereotypes are ok? And why on earth should we get over it?

Pinkroses87 · 14/12/2020 19:27

@EllenRipley it really is the most perfect demolition. I always wonder if Richard Curtis has ever read it and what he thinks if he has.

EllenRipley · 14/12/2020 19:48

@Pinkroses87
Demolition is the perfect description. Has he made any more 'films' since LA? If not, maybe he has read it... if so, he really should. God help us if he decides to do a multi-narrative romantic paean to lockdown or some such thing.

isawthat · 14/12/2020 19:51

I don’t mind it, but everyone I know loves it. It just isn’t a Christmas film to me

Unicant · 14/12/2020 19:56

Elf and Bad Santa are my favourite Christmas films, they both have genuinely funny moments which is rare in Christmas films!

Unicant · 14/12/2020 19:57

Also I agree with all the posters who hate love actually.. it is a shallow insulting commercialised take on grief and love.... and the uk.

user1471565182 · 14/12/2020 22:13

Seems people are more annoyed about others having the audacity to have a well thought out opinion about popular culture. And the population gets more and more stupid by the day.

user1471565182 · 14/12/2020 22:15

And oh my lord the 'you dont like that people have opinions' thing(usually spouted by right wing lunatics). Its the content of the opinion thats the issue.
