Love Actually - yes or no?

WarmSausageTea · 10/12/2020 18:56

I fancy watching something festive, and I’m wondering about watching LA. I saw it 10+ years ago, and wasn’t keen, but I have had gin and am feeling quite chilled.

So, LA, yes or no? And if no, can I have some cheesy Christmas film recs, please? (I loved Last Christmas and the three Netflix prince films.)

Thanks.

Awful film

confusedpombear · 10/12/2020 23:01

I love it. One of my favourite Xmas films

Tootsietootie · 10/12/2020 23:01

A pile of sexist shite.I loved it when I first saw it but watched it last year and couldn't believe what a pile of drivel it was!

Tootsietootie · 10/12/2020 23:02

Though quite pleased I no longer lap up that sort of bollocks.

HallFloor · 10/12/2020 23:04

I watched recently for the first time, wondering what all the fuss was about. I'm still wondering.

I watched Holidate last night. That's rubbish too but it's watchable softhearted rubbish.

EggnogAndAMincepie · 10/12/2020 23:05

Watched it for the first time the other week. All I can say about that is Jesus fucking Christ

Elderflower14 · 11/12/2020 03:54

I love it... Can recommend The Family Stone....

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 11/12/2020 03:57

Do yourself a favour and just watch the emma Thompson scene in the bedroom and leave the rest. It’s rubbish on so many levels

monkeytennis97 · 11/12/2020 04:28

God no.

Blacktothepink · 11/12/2020 04:56

Pile of misogynistic shite!
My fav Xmas films are trading places and gremlins

BlackCatShadow · 11/12/2020 05:04

Oh, Gremlins is a great recommendation. Thank you!

Crustmasiscoming · 11/12/2020 05:05

Thought it was a cheesey pile of garbage when it first came out, but now... Oh my god, it has aged so badly... I think it may have become one of the worst films of all time.

QueefBee · 11/12/2020 05:12

Mumsnet is obsessed with Love Actually. Every few months we have a thread on it.

Maybe because it seems to be on tv all the time? I know I saw it when it was in cinemas, and have certainly never sat down to watch it since — and am not in fact much of a tv watcher at all — but it seems at times that every time I flick through the channels I see Martine McCutcheon chirping ‘Where the fuck is my fucking coat?’ or Egg from This Life holding up his sinister signs or Kris Marshall saying ‘bottle’ to Americans in a nasty bar.

Or the only bit of the film I actually find sad, which is not Emma Thompson standing in her bedroom trying to cry invisibly, but when she meets her useless PM brother Hugh Grant backstage at the school Christmas concert and is pathetically happy to see him because she’s just found out her husband is shagging a cliché and thinks Hugh Grant has for once made an effort for his niece and nephew, because she always sends his secretary the invitations but he’s always too busy. Which makes it doubly ironic that Hugh Grant has in fact just had enough time to visit every house in Wandsworth looking for a former employee he fancies.

Yutes · 11/12/2020 06:35

I think mumsnet ruined Love Actually for me! But only because the characters are truly awful and manipulative.
I don’t think The Holiday is much better to be honest!

My recommendations would include Christmas with a View (Netflix), Christmas Inheritance (Netflix) or The Christmas Chronicles (Netflix) if you haven’t seen it.
The first two are made for Tv but they are short and feelgood.

QueefBee · 11/12/2020 07:02

Yeah i actually liked it until I read the comments on it here. Ruined it for me and i feel like a bad feminist for liking it.

Clawdy · 11/12/2020 08:36

If you like it, you like it, so watch it. Other people's comments should not make a difference. We all like or love different films and books, because we all see things differently. That's life.

chubbyhotchoc · 11/12/2020 09:31

I quite like jingle all the way and the first Christmas chronicles movie

teateateateateamoretea · 11/12/2020 09:47

The best film ever

Honestly, if this is actually your favourite film, I'd be really worried about you.

BogRollBOGOF · 11/12/2020 09:56

This.

I enjoy it. I like the coverage of various strands of love and connections. Some heartfelt and some frivilous cheese.
It was of its moment, and frankly that moment was better than this moment.

TheMarzipanDildo · 11/12/2020 10:01

I love it, but do also fully concur with all the criticisms on this thread! It is nonsense, and should be enjoyed as such.

Deadringer · 11/12/2020 10:21

Love actually isn't my favourite, and some of the dialogue is pretty dire, but pp are being unfair posh man beds his cleaner who doesn't speak english isn't true. He learns Portugese and proposes to her, no 'bedding' portrayed at any point. Man stalks best friends wife also isn't true. He deliberately avoids her because he has fallen for her. After she realises he does confess his feelings, but makes it clear he wants nothing from her and is moving on with his life. Love Actually is about love, family, friendship and of course Christmas, and while much of it is clumsy and sometimes cringey, it definitely has it's moments. Last Christmas is very silly imo and mostly suitable for teenagers. The Holiday is crap. My favourite Christmas story is A Christmas Carol, most of the versions are worth watching.

ChristmasWitch · 11/12/2020 10:37

Everyone likes different things, though, and other people's comments shouldn't ruin it for you. I'm not a feminist and I don't get all all offended over what's essentially just Christmas entertainment.

I hate some of the Christmas films mentioned on this thread - The Holiday, Jingle All The Way Last Christmas.. to quote the Grinch 'loathe entirely!!'

onlythepianoplayer · 11/12/2020 10:40

I'm not a feminist

You don't believe women should be treated equally to men?

youvegottenminuteslynn · 11/12/2020 11:11

@ChristmasWitch

Please reconsider using the phrase "I'm not a feminist" as being a feminist literally just means believing in equal rights between men and women. Nobody has to agree with all the opinions of all feminists of course, but the basic belief that men and women should have equal rights is something I hope should be universally aimed for.
