Songs that have you sobbing

Mine is dire straits, on every street.
When ddad told us he had cancer we left shortly afterwards and this came on in the car. Dad is a huge dire straits fan and this song just made me think of him, and how if he wasn't around I'd 'see' him on the street.
Morbidly, I decided it would be played at his funeral. Luckily I haven't had to break it put yet. But the first few bars have me in floods of tears.

Oh god, I once heard a song called 'you can let go now' by Crystal Shawanda and I daren't ever listen to it again. My heart broke listening to it. I had to ring my Dad afterward just to hear his voice.

Honey (I miss you)
Slipping through my fingers
First time ever I saw your face
What a Wonderful world - Louis Armstrong

Carpathian2 · 09/12/2020 10:10

Man of the world by Peter Green ( fleetwood Mac) The first time I heard it I was about 14 and full of teenage angst. Still gets me now, I have to stop what I'm doing to listen if it's on the radio.
Also, At 17 by Janis Ian. Another one from my teenage years.

BellaBellaBelle · 09/12/2020 10:12

The Cinematic Orchestra - To build a home is one of the most beautiful, sad songs I’ve ever heard.

Also Coldplay ‘O’. The line ‘maybe one day I’ll fly next to you.’

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/12/2020 10:14

Not that it’s going to happen this year ☹️, but hearing/watching little kids singing Away In A Manger at Nativity plays. Guaranteed to have me groping for the tissues.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 09/12/2020 10:15

Obviously it doesn't get air time now but 'Two little boys' by Rolf Harris always got my bottom lip trembling.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 09/12/2020 10:17

Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye. Leonard Cohen

Just awesomely sad.

toria658 · 09/12/2020 10:26

Smells like teen spirit - Tori Amos cover, Kurt Cobain and similar talents lost to drugs.
The day it was announced Kylie Minogue had breast cancer Tori was touring and sang ‘can’t get you out of my head’ live in solidarity, many wet eyes at that concert.
This.. especially now.
The line 'These are the people who'll make you feel safe in this world' makes me cry every time.
And this year my own DS1 is 9000 miles from home (in Oz and can't come back) and the song says it all
That is D's favourite song. Beautiful

Oneearringlost · 09/12/2020 10:34

Dh's I meant

Knittingnanny · 09/12/2020 10:37

Lots of those already mentioned plus
“ to where you are” Josh Groban but I particularly love the version by G4
Makes me cry every time

mollscroll · 09/12/2020 10:39

oh and this by Paul McCartney about John Lennon about their love and their difficult friendship and what they did for each other.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 09/12/2020 10:41

Wings....Mull of Kintyre
Reminds me of my lovely dad....he died at the age of 56....a sudden death....20 years ago now and i still cry every time i hear that song.

dudsville · 09/12/2020 10:46

"White wine the sun", a Christmas song by I forget who. It such a lovely sentiment but reminds me of what I haven't got. I have a great life and I am happy but this song makes me regret that things weren't different in my family. My partner loves the song so I've never told him how it makes me feel but it means that a few times each christmas I just feel awfully down for a few minutes.

EasternDailyStress · 09/12/2020 10:47

White Wine in the Sun by Tim Minchin. It's a Christmas song which starts off quite light-hearted but becomes very emotional.

Fleamaker123 · 09/12/2020 10:51

The theme tune to the tv show The Onedin Line... reminds me of my mum and my 70's childhood.

Bananasplease · 09/12/2020 10:53

Sigrid: Home to You. Absolutely beautiful song.

Dramalady52 · 09/12/2020 10:56

Wind beneath my wings - every time Bette says "thank you, thank you, thank God for you", I'm in floods; Annie's Song, can't cope! And too many others to mention. Tried listening to Mellow Magic radio one day and gave up after an hour, too many evocative songs, I was a mess Grin

jay55 · 09/12/2020 10:57

Nocturnes from the musical of Love Story.

squashyhat · 09/12/2020 11:04

@fallfallfall

Silly but I can’t bear Puff the Magic Dragon.
Me too. We sang it in my choir once - cue lots of heaving shoulders and sniffing 😥
Chickenwing · 09/12/2020 11:09

Supermarket flowers - Ed Sheeran

TheLadyOfShallnott · 09/12/2020 11:09

I forgot to mention ‘you are my sunshine’ - batters me every time.

And also ‘black’ by dangermouse with Norah Jones.

Not sobs. Silent tears for that one.

MrsM36 · 09/12/2020 11:10

@Molly70

If Tomorrow Never Comes by Garth Brooks. I listened to it the day after my horse died after breaking her leg in the field. I had so many plans for us and I thought we were going to have years together. The song is about the sudden loss of a spouse but the sentiment is the same.
As a fellow horse owner, I completely get this one... a close friend recently lost his horse in a freak accident whilst out doing what they loved the most. I was absolutely devastated for him as they should have had so many years ahead of them. Big hugs to you xx
Ejb86 · 09/12/2020 11:12

I know it is Amanda Holden, but this.

She spoke about how this song resonated with her and hubby after their little boy was born sleeping. I lost twin girls last year and now this song just sets me off every time.

SinkGirl · 09/12/2020 11:13

I am not a fan of either of these people in the least but I cannot listen to Hurt by Christina Aguilera or Piece By Piece by Kelly Clarkson. They upset me so much I feel actually sick. If they ever come on anything I have to turn them off.

Autumn Leaves, the Eva Cassidy version breaks me every time too, reminds me of my mum.

Waving Through A Window from Dear Evan Hansen is a beautiful song but makes me so sad.
