Songs that have you sobbing

Mine is dire straits, on every street.
When ddad told us he had cancer we left shortly afterwards and this came on in the car. Dad is a huge dire straits fan and this song just made me think of him, and how if he wasn't around I'd 'see' him on the street.
Morbidly, I decided it would be played at his funeral. Luckily I haven't had to break it put yet. But the first few bars have me in floods of tears.

Alone Again Naturally by Gilbert O’Sullivan

It’s the bit about his mother not understanding why they only man she had ever loved had been taken...

And Sunshine on Leith.

And Johnny Matthis - When a Child is Born. It’s the line “for a spell or two, no one feels forlorn, this comes to pass, when a child is born”.

Greenteandchives · 09/12/2020 08:09

Jim Croce’s Photographs and Memories.
Also Roberta Flack, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, and Diana Ross, Touch Me in The Morning.
All remind me of my first love and those intense teenage feelings.

SlipperTripper · 09/12/2020 08:16

Leona Lewis, Run. The cover of the Snow Patrol song. Has me in bits after losing my daughter, every lyric seems to make perfect sense.

Just listened to it - shouldn't have!

misskatamari · 09/12/2020 08:17

El Capitan by Idlewild always makes me a bit emotional.

Songs that make me cry, mainly for reasons relating to losing my mum, as "What am I doing hanging round" by the monkees, "redshirt" by Johnathan coulton, and "driftwood" by travis had me crying on the kitchen floor a few months ago. That one was mainly as it triggered memories of being a teenager and happy at home, with my mum. I don't think many songs set me off just for purely "this song makes me emotional" reasons, but I definitely have a few that seem to make me feel grief and loss, as they're associated with loved ones and times I shared with them in the past

mumfordofson · 09/12/2020 08:23

I hope you dance, the country version (but I'll even forgive the Roman Keating cover) I've lived a very 'safe' life and the words are absolutely what I want to say to DC. "When you get the choice to sit it out or dance, dance" 😭

Clawdy · 09/12/2020 08:32

You've Got A Friend - James Taylor. Played at SIL's funeral. The words seem so relevant "Winter, spring, summer or fall, All you have to do is call, And I'll be there, yes I will....."

Aalvarino · 09/12/2020 08:51

'Reminds me of you' by Van Morrison. For the man who was a shit but who I will never get over

sunshineandlollypops · 09/12/2020 08:54

Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash - Girl from the North County.
Such a beautiful song.

sunshineandlollypops · 09/12/2020 08:56

Sorry. Girl from the North Country

sadsaddersaddest · 09/12/2020 08:57

Baby Mine (from Dumbo) sung by Bette Midler.
I played it at my unborn son's funeral.
I haven't been able to listen to it since.

Hoppinggreen · 09/12/2020 08:58

Marshmallow, Happy.
I had a dog the same as the one in the video and he was always there for me growing up, was the one I spoke to when things were shitty at school and/or at home. We got DD one of the same breed when she was the age I was when I got mine and he provides her with emotional support too. The video had me in such a state that I only need to hear the song now to lose it

Blobby10 · 09/12/2020 09:03

"Slipping Through my Fingers" by Abba always get me.
"Ive Been Waiting for you" and "my love my life" got me proper sobbing when I watched MM2 with my kids. Got me some lovely hugs Grin

"One Call Away" by Charlie Puth - when my DD left home at 16 to go to college her best friend put a montage of photos of their summer together with this song as a background. Took four years before I could listen to it without crying.
"Carry me Home" by Ward Thomas for the same reason.

"On my Own" from les Mis when sung by Samantha Barks in the film - funnily enough her version is the only one that makes me cry.
"Close Every Door" on stage at a theatre near me last year - the guys voice gave me goosebumps and the key change just set me off!

Dizzybintess · 09/12/2020 09:13

Hurt by johnny cash - My dads fave and we lost him this year, just thinking about it makes me want to cry. Its all too raw. In fact I haven't been able to listen to any Johnny Cash since august. Music was his life.

Snow patrol - chasing cars. My husbands gran was a huge part of our lives and when she died they let us into the hospital room without realising she had passed away. It was a huge shock and very upsetting
I offered to go and call her niece and they took me into an office where this song was playing and I totally broke down.

Wonderful World by Louis armstrong
After 2 years of fertility treatment I got pregnant, the whole pregnancy was v fraught and the labour lasted a week.
while they did an emergency c section because they thought her heart had stopped, the surgeon had Wonderful world by Louis Armstrong playing. The song ended as she came out.
She was fine after the C section and is now our only child.

Little Wing by the Corrs My cousin who had cerebral palsy passed away at the age of 30. She used a chair all her life and the specialists also believe she was blind also. She was non verbal.
They played this song in her funeral and the lyrics about finally flying free really hit me like a ton of bricks!

A few years after they played it in a school concert with some photos as a montage and I felt like I was going to pass out it was that upsetting, All the memories and fears that she might not have survived came flooding back.
The room started spinning. I had to stay put as I had several children with me.

Aalvarino · 09/12/2020 09:14

Agree with Abba's Slipping through my Fingers. So mawkish, but so very teary......

Just had Van the Man on on the school run.... ugly tears on the slip road!

SimplySteveRedux · 09/12/2020 09:15

Two more:

David Cook - Permanent

"I know he's living in hell every single day
And so I ask, oh God is there some way for me to take his place
And when they say it's all touch and go
I wish I could make it go away
But still you say
Will you think that you're all alone
When no one's there to hold your hand?
When all you know seems so far away
And everything is temporary,"

Evanescence - Hello

"Playground school bell rings again
Rain clouds come to play again
Has no one told you she's not breathing?
Hello I'm your mind giving you someone to talk to
Hello
If I smile and don't believe
Soon I know I'll wake from this dream
Don't try to fix me I'm not broken
Hello I'm the lie living for you so you can hide
Don't cry
Suddenly I know I'm not sleeping
Hello I'm still here
All that's left of yesterday"

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/12/2020 09:16

So many of these make me cry.

The one I struggle with is "Fields of Gold" by Sting. My dad loved that song and we played it to him as he died. Mum and I held one if his hands each and we sang along softly. He took his final breath in the middle of the song and mum and I carried on singing to the end. It was a very beautiful and peaceful death, he was unconscious but I'd like to think that some part of his subconscious was aware of the music.

We played it at his funeral as well. It brings a happy/sad tear to my eye whenever I hear it even 2 years on. I prefer the Eva Cassidy version and I can hear that without any problem.

Rainbowandscarlett · 09/12/2020 09:16

You can’t always get what you want by the Rolling Stones
It’s the song my friend chose for her own funeral (she has a sense of humour)
She died of cancer and I miss her everyday-she was my second mum, friend and she saved my sanity many many times
We love and miss you Nina xxx

Slipping through my fingers totally gets me too! My daughter does dancing and is very good at it. Her dance school did a ballet piece and she was the first on doing a solo. It was so beautiful! She is coming up to 10 and the song really is apt as I feel like she has become this tall almost tween overnight!
TommyKnocker · 09/12/2020 09:20

Hans Zimmer, Now We Are Free (Gladiator). Gets me everytime.

Spudina · 09/12/2020 09:22

Alanis Morissette ‘That I would be good’. Also East 17 “Stay”. Was Christmas number one the year my Mum was dying from Cancer. Still can’t bear to hear it.

northstars · 09/12/2020 09:23

Fix You by Coldplay for me, every. Single. Time.

grey12 · 09/12/2020 09:25

Aqualung "strange and beautiful" Sad it's such a beautiful song

OulDoll · 09/12/2020 09:50

Bit random, but 'Warm Love Gone Cold' by Christine Collister. It was the theme tune to 'The Life and Loves of a She Devil'. Her voice is just wonderful. I felt such an emotional connection with the book and series that the song just hits me right in the gut.

MagicSummer · 09/12/2020 09:56

Yes to 'Driving Home for Christmas' - don't know what it is about it, must be the combination of the twinkly music and his rough voice!

'Merry Christmas Darling' by the Carpenters - Karen's voice just gets me.

'Time to say Goodbye' by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Boccelli - I have to turn it up very loud and find it very emotional.

'I would rather go blind' by Chicken Shack - haunting music and words. Do listen if you have never heard it.
