Songs that have you sobbing

Mine is dire straits, on every street.
When ddad told us he had cancer we left shortly afterwards and this came on in the car. Dad is a huge dire straits fan and this song just made me think of him, and how if he wasn't around I'd 'see' him on the street.
Morbidly, I decided it would be played at his funeral. Luckily I haven't had to break it put yet. But the first few bars have me in floods of tears.

@StillMedusa I was reminded about that song on the recent christmas song thread. It also had me sobbing but I am the one 1000s of miles away who can't get home.

RomanMum · 09/12/2020 06:31

I don't normally cry at songs but Elton John did the soundtrack to a (pretty poor) late 60s/early 70s film called Friends and 'Seasons' gets me every time. In our early days DH made a mix tape with it on and that was the first time I heard it.

Also Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, especially this year. Some day soon we all may be together, if the fates allow...

Tears in heaven - Eric Clapton
Sad Sad Sad

StealthPolarBear · 09/12/2020 06:37

This woman's work by Kate Bush gets me every time. DS caught me crying to it whist washing up one morning not long ago and thought it highly ridiculous and didn't understand but he's 12.Grin

Also Mary's Boy Child by Boney M I think it's the lyric about hope to find peace that just strikes me.

Monkeytapper · 09/12/2020 07:01

‘These were the days of our lives’ Queen. My Mum was a huge Freddie fan and this was played at her funeral.

mellongoose · 09/12/2020 07:18

This Woman's Work by Kate Bush also.

Pregnant with our second, early on, I was a little bit hormonal and cried in the kitchen when it came on. DH and I had a cuddle everything was fine.

20 week scan. It all went wrong. We had to terminate and I delivered our second girl sleeping. I miss her so much and this is what I listen to when I need a good cry about her.

Sunshine on Leith - Proclaimers
While I'm worth my room on this earth
I will be with you

Colin Hay - I just don't think I'll ever get over you.

Into the West by Annie Lennox - the final song from The Lord of The Rings when Frodo gets on the last ship to sail to the grey havens. The words, the mood and the music are all so beautiful and describe loss, grief and hope so well.

DontWantALot · 09/12/2020 07:27

Nina Simone - for all we know

You are my sunshine.

AuntyFungal · 09/12/2020 07:28

Hope There’s Someone by Antony and the Johnsons

FindMeInTheSunshine · 09/12/2020 07:34

Heart's 'All I wanna do'. The desperation to have a child, resonating with me so much, and the fact that I never succeeded still means this makes me weep every time.

Best wishes to you, OP.

NeedToKnow101 · 09/12/2020 07:34

Mine is True colours by Cyndi Lauder..
'Can't remember when
I last saw you laughing
This world makes you crazy
And you've taken all you can bear
Just call me up
'Cause I will always be there
And I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you'
Has me in bits every time. Reminds me of how unhappy my brother was in the last few years before he died, and how he wasn't himself (severe mental illness) and how unhappy I was after he died.

Also Dark side of the moon by Pink Floyd. He loved that album and I played it non-stop in the weeks after he died.

NeedToKnow101 · 09/12/2020 07:36

@SimplySteveRedux - Thanks for you. So sad.
I miss you loads on the music thread ❤️

BathTangle · 09/12/2020 07:37

Dance with my father: Luther Vandross.

If I could steal one final glance, one final step
One final dance with him
I'd play a song that would never ever end
'Cause I'd love, love, love to dance with my father again

Monkeytapper · 09/12/2020 07:38

‘Drawn from Memory’ Embrace

SquishSquashSqueeze · 09/12/2020 07:40

Ben E King - stand by me. This was chosen by my husband (who had very little opinion or input on most things!) as our first dance at our wedding.

Lonestar - let them be little

Bridecilla · 09/12/2020 07:48

Well this is ridiculous. I'm crying without even listening to any of these.

Mine is g.co/kgs/HEFpBy

Bridecilla · 09/12/2020 07:49

Sorry ^^ link is The Band Perry. Mother like mine

nellyburt · 09/12/2020 07:54

Crying at so many of these songs and stories.

My dd is a huge Louis Tomlinson fan and two of us gets me.

Besom · 09/12/2020 07:56

Ah yes Slipping through my fingers. I get a bit of a catch in my throat at Chiquitita as well.

But Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel makes me properly sob. My mum died when I was fairly young and it makes me think about her for some reason. I'm welling up now thinking about it.

gettingolderbutcooler · 09/12/2020 07:58

Golden slumbers when sung by elbow

PajamasnoDramas · 09/12/2020 08:01

One day I’ll fly away - Randy Crawford
The first time ever I saw your face - Roberta Flack
Old Friends/Bookends - Simon and Garfunkel
The long and winding road - Beatles - this one takes me right back to when my late DF’s father’s illness was diagnosed due to the Will Young version being played no end on radio. In spite of that I wanted it for funeral but overruled by DM, more than fair enough though.
And Puff the Magic dragon, so often played when I was a child, only when I reached adulthood did I realized how heart-wrenching it is.

EggysMom · 09/12/2020 08:03

Wires by Athlete, for me too. Our son was born 11 weeks early and had the full incubator, ventilator and wires treatment ... The baby's smile at the end of the current Pampers advert, that is just like our son's smile. Every time the advert comes on, I well up and have to go and hug our son, now 11 years old and ASD/SLD so totally oblivious as to why his Mum has just run upstairs for a cuddle ....

Inaquandry19 · 09/12/2020 08:07

Little Bear by the Guillemots, the electric proms version is one of the saddest but most beautiful things I have ever heard.
