Mine is dire straits, on every street.
When ddad told us he had cancer we left shortly afterwards and this came on in the car. Dad is a huge dire straits fan and this song just made me think of him, and how if he wasn't around I'd 'see' him on the street.
Morbidly, I decided it would be played at his funeral. Luckily I haven't had to break it put yet. But the first few bars have me in floods of tears.

Playboy Mommy by Tori Amos
An Ending (Ascent) by Brian Eno
Late For the Sky by Jackson Browne
Climbing to the Moon by Eels

Slipping through my fingers by Abba for me as well. Just the thought has me welling up. I have it on my iPod playlist - heaven knows why I fast forward every time

There's also a beautiful song by Harvey Andrews called 'The Solider', about The Troubles. Heart rending stuff

Chickenwing · 09/12/2020 11:18

Oh and small bump by Ed Sheeran is also heartbreaking. It's about a miscarriage.

I'm not even a big Ed Sheeran fan but he does know how to make a woman cry!

Warmhandscoldheart · 09/12/2020 11:23

Baby mine sung by Bette Midler
One more chance sung by Diana Ross
Both being back the heartbreaking loss of loved ones

EllieQ · 09/12/2020 11:24

Red Dirt Girl by Emmylou Harris - a heartbreaking country song. There’s a cover version by the group First Aid Kit, which I think is better than the original.

Chickenwing · 09/12/2020 11:24

Adele's cover of I can't make you love me. Sad

cretelover · 09/12/2020 11:30

Ellie Goulding How long will I love you. Beautiful song but I can't listen to it at all

SallyCinnamon3009 · 09/12/2020 11:39

@MyNameForToday1980

This Woman's Work, Kate Bush. Heaving messy tears.
Yep! Everytime, even more since it was used in Handmaids Tale

Fields of Gold by Eva Cassidy was 1 of three songs played at my sons funeral - of the three its the one that breaks me everytime :(

TwoZeroTwoZero · 09/12/2020 12:03

"Hurt" by Johnny Cash because it's such an emotionally charged song.

"Face the Sun" by James Blunt because they played it at my step-dad's funeral.

"Goodbye My Lover" also by James Blunt because when I had a cancer scare I had to have an MRI scan. They said to bring a CD to block out the noise of the scanner and his album was the only one I had in the car. It reminds me of laying there in the scanner, alone and terrified of what they might find. Luckily they found nothing!

Feels like Heaven - Fiction Factory, reminds me of sitting with someone and realising they loved me too whilst that was playing on radio . The lyrics don’t fit at all except for the chorus !

BitchIAmFromChicago · 09/12/2020 12:06

For your babies by Simply Red, especially “ I don't believe in many things but in you, I do”.

DS has had numerous SEN appointments over the years and this song just sums up how I feel about him.

thecognoscenti · 09/12/2020 12:07

@fallfallfall

Silly but I can’t bear Puff the Magic Dragon.
Yes! Me too! I can't think about it too much or I cry. Also Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt destroys me.
unmarkedbythat · 09/12/2020 12:11

There are a few that have the potential, depending on how I feel and what's happening at the time.

Sweet Thing by Van Morrison pretty much guarantees it because I wasn't finished the argument with the person it makes me think of and I had so much more so say that now I never can.

supafish · 09/12/2020 12:11

I'll stand by you -by the pretenders ! After a therapeutic abortion this was played on the way home in the car by my husband ! Still brings on the tears 😢

lastqueenofscotland · 09/12/2020 12:19

Rearview - Beach Bunny
Anything by Nieves, but mostly The Knot or Broken Oars
Happier by Bastille

ShagMeRiggins · 09/12/2020 12:20

Well, that’s my next Spotify playlist sorted.

Mine is Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.

Clawdy · 09/12/2020 13:04

MagicSummer I'd forgotten that heartbreaking Chicken Shack song. Will be playing it tonight.

Greenteandchives · 09/12/2020 13:07

EmmaGrundyforPM what a beautiful, beautiful story. I shed a tear for you and your dad when I read it.

OverTheRainbow88 · 09/12/2020 13:10

Amazing grace, because of the history behind the song and also it reminds me of funerals

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 09/12/2020 13:11

Annie's Song by John Denver.

My husband has incurable cancer and he put Annie's Song on Youtube the other day.
This verse was too much and I had to ask him to turn it off....

Come, let me love you
Let me give my life to you
Let me drown in your laughter
Let me die in your arms
Let me lay down beside you
Let me always be with you
Come, let me love you
Come love me again

Bluemooninmyeyes1 · 09/12/2020 13:29

‘Hymn to her’ by The Pretenders. Beautiful song that I discovered after my grandma had just died so reminds me of her.

IsFinnRogersDead · 09/12/2020 14:40

Have all you Time Minchin fans heard Harbour Lights?

Beautiful song, and very emotional version with all the family there so proud and having fun.
YellowHighlighterPen · 09/12/2020 14:43

Bright Eyes
In the Bleak Midwinter
Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep.

The one that had me ugly crying a few weeks ago is Oasis Stop crying your heart out. Mum died in march and dad died at the beginning of November. After he died my sisters and I spent 4 weeks clearing the house (where they had lived for 51 years), ready to hand back to the LA. This song started to play on the radio and it just broke me. The line "take what you need and be on your way, and stop crying your heart out", would have been exactly what my parents would have said.
