Songs that have you sobbing

Mine is dire straits, on every street.
When ddad told us he had cancer we left shortly afterwards and this came on in the car. Dad is a huge dire straits fan and this song just made me think of him, and how if he wasn't around I'd 'see' him on the street.
Morbidly, I decided it would be played at his funeral. Luckily I haven't had to break it put yet. But the first few bars have me in floods of tears.

Athlete Wires. My Ds2 was hospitalised on Christmas Eve when he was 3 weeks old. They didn't know what was wrong with him, but I was told he could die. This song seemed to be played a lot on the hospital radio and the words really resonated. It was Christmas, and I was looking at the christmas lights and tinsel reflected in his eyes. Running down the corridor to call DP to tell him he had been rushed off for a lumbar puncture. Whenever I hear the song I am instantly transported back to that time 12 years ago when I didn't know if I would get to leave the hospital with my baby.

Ds2 is now a very healthy 12 year old. But I cry whenever I hear that song. It is currently being used for a TV advert so I seem to well up quite a bit.

Oh yes 'Slipping through my fingers' Both of my girls got married recently and the eldest in particular even looks like the actress... reduces me to a sobbing mess....

acatcalledjohn · 09/12/2020 01:24

The only one that catches me out every single time is Belfast Child by Simple Minds. There are other songs that will sometimes get me, but normally only when there is something going on in my life.

TheSandman · 09/12/2020 01:28

Into my Arms by Nick Cave

Aretha Franklin - (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman ...

Both reduce me to floods - especially if I sing along. I'm an atheist and a man. I have no idea why either of these songs affect me so much.

berrygirlie · 09/12/2020 01:31

Absolutely 100%, @TheSandman. "Into My Arms" is one of my favourite songs. "So Long Marianne" by Leonard Cohen is another song that makes me feel a bit mushy on the inside.

(though to be fair most Cohen songs do that). Especially "Hallelujah", though preferably the Jeff Buckley cover.

Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. It's probably the saddest piece of music ever written. They played it at JFK's funeral.

Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now

elp30 · 09/12/2020 01:39

The Cure's "Love Song".

My best friend was a huge Cure fan and when this song was released in 1989, we were 19 and she said that when she eventually married, she would play the song as her first song with her new husband at the wedding. She did in 1998.

Her husband played the song at her funeral in 2007. She died from complications from pneumonia, aged 36. She left behind two sons, aged six and two.

The main lyric is a simple, "I will always love you".

I simply can't hear it. I miss her every day and I hope that her two sons never forget her.

Rows and floes of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 miles)

Gets me every time.

If Tomorrow Never Comes by Garth Brooks. I listened to it the day after my horse died after breaking her leg in the field. I had so many plans for us and I thought we were going to have years together. The song is about the sudden loss of a spouse but the sentiment is the same.

Mammyloveswine · 09/12/2020 03:16

Love this thread!

Can I add "no charge" by Tammy Wynette?

HeronLanyon · 09/12/2020 03:53

loudon wainwright ‘Homeless’

When you were alive I was never alone
Somewhere in the world there was something called home.
It ends
I feel like I’m homeless but I will be all right
I’ll get through the days and I’ll face down the night.

Variety of sob and good memories of my lovely old ma who died a couple of years ago

Hero by Enrique Iglesias, my late dp used to sing it to me on Karaoke, I filmed him singing it once on holiday & put it on YouTube for a joke, I can't bear to watch it now because it was played at his funeral.

Hello from the Jazz Singer, it was one of the first films we watched together & the film makes me cry anyway but now reminds me so much of what I lost & of happy times in the grotty flat we lived in.

secretrugbyfan · 09/12/2020 05:32

There are two for me....

I was watching George Best's funeral on TV...this was not long after my own Dad had died....when Bring Him Home (sung by Brian Kennedy and Peter Corry) came on...cue floods of tears.

The next one is Brave by The Shires. Me and Mrs SRF had seen The Shires live and had really got into their music. We were driving for a hospital appointment where we thought we were going to be told that Mrs SRF had MS...turns out the Neuro Consultant was a fuckwit who had misjudged her initial diagnosis.....anyway Brave came on the radio...how I held it together as I was driving and didn't want her to see how I was feeling at that time I'll never know. Every time that song comes on, it takes me back to that day...cue tears and sobbing.

Mrs SRF is fine.....no MS thankfully.

Roxanne Emery - Too Dark Tonight
Darren Hayes - Darkness
Goo Goo Dolls - Better Days
Cathy Burton - I Surrender

SimplySteveRedux · 09/12/2020 06:07

All of these strike a nerve due to persistent childhood abuse and the shackles it placed on me. Even now it's so incredibly tough and I often have to live day-to-day with no self-worth or self respect common denominators. Self harm plays its part and late at night, when the demons come, music is the only thing that keeps me sane and safe. These are just four, my playlist "songs that saved my life" has 712 tracks...

Too Dark Tonight

"The things they always say
The tunnels lead to light
It's something I don't see
Cause it's too dark tonight

And you give, all you got, but it's never enough
When you've got, nothing left
It all just gets too much"

Darkness

"Turning pages over
Run away to nowhere
And it's hard to take control
When your enemy's old and afraid of you
You'll discover that the monster you were running from
Is the monster in you"

Better Days

"I wish everyone was loved tonight
And somehow stop this endless fight
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days"

I Surrender

"Everybody's seeking meaning
A place to call a home
Something to believe in before we're gone
Everybody's seeking comfort
Someone to be a friend
A hand to hold on to in times of pain
I need some love
I need to hear
The ache of no reason has taken its toll
I think it's time for giving up
I think it's time for giving in
Too tired to fight
All I am I give to you
You are home
In you I feel my meaning"

Silly but I can’t bear Puff the Magic Dragon.

HigherFurtherFasterBaby · 09/12/2020 06:14

Sia, Breathe Me.

badlydrawnbear · 09/12/2020 06:20

Pretty much everything at the moment.
I listen to the entire back catalogue of Frightened Rabbit on repeat and sob at most of them, especially Poke.

GalaxyCookieCrumble · 09/12/2020 06:26

Listen to Little Mix Good enough, gosh it's beautiful but very sad when you hear the context of the lyrics, and Jesys struggles.
