Do you deep clean your house before putting up Christmas decorations and your tree?

I remember my mum massively deep cleaning the house prior to any decorations going up! and it's kind of stuck with me in my adult years.. just wondering who else does it?

Yes, like many an inherited trait. Before we had a fitted fridge it included dragging the fridge out to clean underneath it (much to my husband's amusemet) as guests obviously get down on their hands & knees to check such thingsHmmGrin

The cobwebs were very convenient for Halloween weren't they! Not so much for Christmas!

I do like to do a clean before putting the tree up. Although our house is on the market so supposed to be 'viewer' friendly at all times which is bloody exhausting with a 5 year old and a 12 week old baby! Can't wait till it's sold!

Bloodybridget · 03/12/2020 21:56

Well, I spotted a cobweb when I was up the stepladder putting the lights on the tree on Tuesday, and I did rub it away, does that count?

@Therainisback oh yes, I most definitely clean behind and under the fridge and on top of the washing machine. Not sure why. I'm the only adult in my house 😁

Yes, I always do a deep clean, because its so hard to dust again once all your surfaces are covered in cotton wool and ornaments. I'm not much of a fan if dust gatherers the rest of the year round.

IdblowJonSnow · 03/12/2020 22:18

Yes! And then I'll do it again after too! I like cleaning, odd I know!

Alicatz66 · 03/12/2020 22:54

I'd rather do a big spring clean .. you don't see the dust in winter!!!

LER83 · 03/12/2020 23:13

Yes I do, and I'm so glad others do to as my dh thinks I'm mad! Carpets have been cleaned, as have all windows, skirting boards, doors, every single thing dusted/hoovered, and curtains/sofa covers washed etc! Not exactly sure why it all needs to be clean though, just something I do every year 😆

Purpler5 · 03/12/2020 23:15

Er, no!

Freshcoatofpaint · 03/12/2020 23:18

Always. I love decorating a lovely clean house 🙂 And as a pp said, it won't get another thorough clean until they're back at school.

MoiraCrows · 04/12/2020 16:11

@DryRoastPeanut

Yes I do, my mum did, I thought everyone did.
What exactly does your deep clean involve?
Nicolastuffedone · 04/12/2020 16:18

Yes.....I’m not going to decorate my house if it hasn’t been thoroughly cleaned

Simplyunacceptable · 04/12/2020 16:28

Not really. I move the furniture around to accommodate the tree so vacuum where the furniture used to be but that’s about it.

FastMovingLuxuryGoods · 04/12/2020 16:35

Cleaning threads on MN always make me feel as if I live on another much dirtier planet, but this one surely takes the biscuit.

Wash the walls? Clean behind the fridge? Because... you're putting a Christmas tree up? What? Why?

The work women create for themselves never ceases to amaze me. I'll be on the sofa opening the Quality Street while you lot are giving the skirting boards a fresh coat of paint, thanks very much.

LadyPenelope68 · 04/12/2020 16:36

Yes, huge deep clean before it goes up and again when it comes down.

Nicolastuffedone · 05/12/2020 07:28

FastMoving Oh, I’ll be opening the Quality Street too! Just as soon as I’ve deep cleaned!

MuchTooTired · 05/12/2020 07:31

I’m obviously a disgusting lazy mare because I don’t Xmas Blush

TreacleHart · 05/12/2020 07:37

Our Christmas tree goes into the corner of doom in our room. It contains one of those cube things that hides a load of tat ( spare chargers , magazines you decide has something you will read again , craft magazines , bank statements etc.
It only gets sorted once a year to move to allow Christmas tree to go there.

mathanxiety · 05/12/2020 07:43

I do.

I'll be doing it this weekend and on Wednesday as I'll have that day off.

CMOTDibbler · 05/12/2020 11:24

Do men feel the need to do a deep clean for christmas because their mum did? I bet you there isn't a single man who gives a toss about it

Hmm

Who cares?

Women want to do something but they shouldn’t because men don’t also want to do it?

SabrinaTheTeenageBitch · 05/12/2020 12:01

What constitutes a 'deep clean'? I do give the house a thorough dust, hoover etc before decorations go up but I've never in my adult life washed the walls Grin I'm intrigued

TwoZeroTwoZero · 05/12/2020 12:14

I Hoover up and shift things off the surfaces where the trees will go. I tidy up a bit to make it look nice for the photos. I don't think I've ever done a deep clean.

lljkk · 05/12/2020 12:33

I perceive that this thread amounts to peer pressure (among women) that somehow deep cleaning proves one's adequacy. Men do not have this unpleasant pressure. Either the women are anxious nuts or the men tend to be slatterns... personally I'm with the slatterns so you can guess what I think of these threads.

Smallsteps88 · 05/12/2020 12:36

I have no pressure to clean my house. No- one comes to my house. I just like it clean. Like I like my teeth and hair clean. Because I feel better with clean teeth than I feel with fuzzy teeth.
