Do you deep clean your house before putting up Christmas decorations and your tree?

I remember my mum massively deep cleaning the house prior to any decorations going up! and it's kind of stuck with me in my adult years.. just wondering who else does it?

Mine needs a clean so I'll do it tomorrow before putting them up on Saturday

Gufo · 03/12/2020 17:25

I aim to but can never be arsed.

doctorhamster · 03/12/2020 17:26

I can honestly say that I've never deep cleaned anything before in my life

Yes, always deep clean. It’s hard to hoover and dust around decorations so I like to do a good job before hand. My husband is taking the kids out Saturday so I can clean then we will put the decorations up on Sunday.

UntamedWisteria · 03/12/2020 17:27

no

vanillandhoney · 03/12/2020 17:27

No, but I'm a bit obsessed with cleaning and probably do a "regular clean" far more often than normal Grin

Titsywoo · 03/12/2020 17:27

I always wonder what people mean by deep clean. I think some peoples idea is my normal weekly clean Grin. So yes I clean before the decs go up but no more than normal.

Peachypips78 · 03/12/2020 17:33

Yes! But I don't know why!

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 03/12/2020 17:35

I'll hoover that corner before I put the tree up... maybe the rest of the room if I'm feeling generous! does that count?

DuzzyFuck · 03/12/2020 17:41

We're getting our tree tomorrow as we both have the day off. There may be a bit of furniture shuffling involved so we might take the opportunity to get underneath everything with my new Shark vac!

That'll be about it though.

escondida · 03/12/2020 17:45

I don't deep clean ever. I do the bare minimum of cleaning.

Maskedcrusader · 03/12/2020 17:47

Yep, I do a big clean. Wash down the walls & everything. I've even taken the day off next Friday to do it. I will make some mulled wine in the slow cooker, stick on a podcast & get stuck in. I think I'm turning into my mother. I will do the same on Nye when I take em down

81Byerley · 03/12/2020 17:59

@larrythelizard

I plan to but only because my house is pretty disgusting. Also I'm sure some of the things others would deem as weekly cleaning is on my 'deep clean' list...!
@larrythelizard I remember years ago listening to Woman's hour and they had a woman talking about how PND had affected her. "I couldn't clean the insides of the windows weekly like most people do". (!!!!!)
Thenumberofrebels · 03/12/2020 18:02

Why the heck would anyone wash the walls? Talk about making work for yourself, what's on them?? Confused

OhioOhioOhio · 03/12/2020 18:03

Usually but not this time.

81Byerley · 03/12/2020 18:04

My Mum told me that her Mum would whitewash the walls before putting up decorations. One year she came out of hospital on Christmas Eve to find her daughters had put them up for her. She said "You can't put decorations on top of muck!" and made them take them down again!

Bikingbear · 03/12/2020 18:05

Not as mental as my mum however there is a big of superstition related to getting rid of the old years dirt.
I am not carting 2020 dirt into 2021 - no chance. Need to be certain 2020 is washed and bleached away.

AurorasLighthouse · 03/12/2020 18:09

I usually try and have a good tidy and clean before any event or holiday because it's good motivation to be able to enjoy the occasion properly knowing the jobs are done.

Friendsoftheearth · 03/12/2020 18:26

Yes I always have, carpets washed - everything is spring cleaned to an old fashioned standard, even the silver is polished. Everywhere in every room. Top to bottom - so the house is ready for the celebrations and will look its very best.

I do the same in January when the celebrations are over, it used to be because we have had so many friends and family over, a good deep clean as I like the house to be pristine, but now I am not sure I will need to this year as the few gatherings we will have will be in the garden for an hour and no use of the house at all this christmas.

That is a bonus I had not considered Grin

CloudyVanilla · 03/12/2020 18:28

Yes I thoroughly spot clean each section as they go up- so where I'm putting the tree furniture will be moved, hoovered and polished. Tbh we even give the walls a spot paint if necessary as we have young DC. Feels lovely to have a nice sparkly christmassy house Halo

Friendsoftheearth · 03/12/2020 18:29

I also paint any scuffs, windows are washed and we fill the kitchen with bulbs and winter plants, because I need more living plants around me in mid winter.

Itstheprinciple · 03/12/2020 18:32

Ooh yes. I want the decorations to look nice so I like the surroundings to be all clear and also it doesn't get done properly until Jan because of the decorations so I like to know its clean. Won't be too bad this year as we only decorated last month so e everywhere got a good cleaning then (although when we moved a bookcase we found a bauble under there from last year that I suspect a cat had squirreled away so that tells you how often we do a deep clean! Grin)

Friendsoftheearth · 03/12/2020 18:33

I also wash the walls, but I use a flash eraser though to remove any light scuffing it saves me or the decorator having to repaint the entire wall. It works wonders. Especially high traffic areas like stairs and hallways.

I actually could not live without my Flash eraser it is a miracle worker on painted walls and has saved me a fortune over the years.

Sandsnake · 03/12/2020 18:45

No, in fact I’ve deliberately put off vacuuming today as it’ll just need doing again on Saturday, when we’ve got the tree and there’s needles everywhere...🤷‍♀️

firesong · 03/12/2020 18:49

Nah
