Do you deep clean your house before putting up Christmas decorations and your tree?

I remember my mum massively deep cleaning the house prior to any decorations going up! and it's kind of stuck with me in my adult years.. just wondering who else does it?

No, as I am not putting up any decorations, just a few fairy lights around the window, but just decided to hoover behind my sofa, and found a dead mouse there. I have three cats, so always to be expected at times.

AlwaysLatte · 03/12/2020 15:25

Not exactly a deep clean but I like to get it completely tidy and clean (not dry clean the curtains and wash the walls though).

@DryRoastPeanut I thought most people did too - but then I am thinking it's just me and DD this year so it's totally pointless ha - it's not like she will appreciate a sparkling clean house - she's only 2 :D

This year I redecorated before putting the tree up Blush Next year I'll just be running the hoover round!

Smallsteps88 · 03/12/2020 15:28

Yes. Well I deep the living room before putting up decs and tree because thats the only room I decorate. I deep clean it because it’s 4 weeks before I can properly clean it again. The rest of the house gets deep cleaned once the decs are up.

lazylinguist · 03/12/2020 15:30

Yes we always have a 6ft+ real tree and also go gathering foliage and make our own wreaths to hang inside as well as outside, so they create mess!

Christmas is fun and only happensonce a year. Cleaning is tedious and happens all the bloody time!

1stDecember · 03/12/2020 15:31

No. Why would I do that? Confused

Just normal housework cleaning.

Oblomov20 · 03/12/2020 15:31

No. Am I supposed to?

steppemum · 03/12/2020 15:34

yes a bit. Because it can usually do with a bit more thorough clean, and I put away some things to make room, and I tidy up some stuff which has been sitting round for ages.

Probably because my cleaning is a bit hit and miss, it needs it!

Runnerduck34 · 03/12/2020 15:34

I do make sure I clean before decs go up as its more difficult to dust etc when they are up and they look nicer when the house is clean and not cluttered with other stuff.
I also make sure I clean properly just before xmas eve as a clean house makes me more relaxed for the big day ( I know its a middle age thing!)
Not sure if it counts as a deep clean though or just clean!

Zoolally · 03/12/2020 15:57

I do but mainly because I have to move things around to make space for the tree, so do a deep clean while I’m at it!

isitsnowingyet · 03/12/2020 16:08

I certainly like the idea of a deep clean. It sounds soooo cleansing. However, I don't actually do it as I am something of a slob.

Do people actually wash their walls!?
HappyDays10101 · 03/12/2020 16:37

Wash the walls?

What?!?!

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 03/12/2020 16:37

Yeah, also an inherited trait. Ive been cleaning the windows today, they were grim Grin

Pebbledashery · 03/12/2020 16:43

I have to admit - I do wash the walls....
Again - something mum used to do!

How? Xmas Shock
Pebbledashery · 03/12/2020 16:57

Warm water and a splash of washing up liquid!

I spot clean the walls. It's necessary as I have a slobbery dog. Envy I use one of those magic sponges with just water.

Onedropbeat · 03/12/2020 17:04

My husband does and it’s annoying AF

Rather than take an afternoon or just a few hours to do it all it takes all day because of the extra cleaning that isn’t required because our house is generally clean

InDubiousBattle · 03/12/2020 17:07

Yes, I've done the living room today, including washing the walls, moving the sofas (even the heavy one!), doing the pictures etc ready for the tree to go up on Saturday. My mother would turn in her grave if I didn't!

SingToTheSky · 03/12/2020 17:07

My plan every November:
I’ll get the house decluttered and a bit cleaner before we decorate

My plan every December from around the 15th:
Fuck it, it’ll do, just shove random crap out the way

ChrissyHynde · 03/12/2020 17:09

Yep ! And can't wait to do it again in the New Year by which time I'm sick of the decs.

Sonofapizzaman · 03/12/2020 17:12

This is definitely a thing.

I remember when we had our first house together the stress of the cleaning before getting the tree up.

The house we live in now has been ... a work in progress since we’ve lived here so there was never that urge to do The Big Christmas Clean cos it would still just look shit.

Wonder if I’ll go back to that once the house looks a bit more like a home. I imagine I will. At least then I know it’s getting one deep clean a year Grin
