We might be craving tiles, but we'll leave the woodchip and artex alone unless we're feeling very brave...

Welcome into another thread covering the whole range of life and death, novelty vegetables, DIY, any other randomness and musings about a certain pandemic.

It is good for cars to get a decent run in them, particularly for charging the battery when it gets more depleted in the winter... although that may be less true than it was 30 years ago Grin
I used it as justification to drive the very long way home from the supermarket up the duel carriageway and across the coyntryside in the sunshine with the windows down at about 6 weeks into this debacle. Much more life affirming than 2 miles through the suburbs.

I do this too. One of our cars is a diesel and it needs to be properly warmed up otherwise Bad Things happen. So I have to take it for a long run every week, like it’s an energetic hound that needs a long walk.

One of my great small pleasures at the moment is boofling off down the A3 to nowhere at all. It makes me feel very free and rebellious for an hour a week.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 29/11/2020 12:48

"Boofling" is an excellent word

BogRollBOGOF · 29/11/2020 12:51

My car will be glad to get the swimming run back. I think that did a lot to keep her predecessor happy through the maternity leave years when most journeys were local pootling.

Reedwarbler sorry to hear about your FIL. It's shocking how little care he seems to have been afforded.

It seems Covid trumps all. Sad

CruCru · 29/11/2020 12:53

Ah, there you are!

justasking111 · 29/11/2020 12:56

Having seen that in Merthyr where mass testing took place 8000 tests in six days only 61 were positive which is 0.7% of 19% of the population which the welsh government have still not released because it skews their doom and gloom figures I suspect, how did it go in Liverpool does anyone know?

justasking111 · 29/11/2020 13:03

Ah Liverpool also 0.7% how strange after testing 110,000 people.

@TrustTheGeneGenie

Morning all. Checking in. Had an awful nights sleep - my athsma is playing up and I needed my inhaler 3 times last night. That almost never happens. Thinking it might be the dust from the woodchip. I'll give it a couple of days and then I'll have to ring the doctors because if it turns into a chest infection I'll be useless for 2 weeks.

More woodchip stripping today Grin then lots of filling and sanding. I don't want to pay a plasterer I want to spend my saved money on nice things Grin

Please wear a mask from builders merchants, hire shop, diy shop. Son with no asthma nearly ended up in hospital after stripping his sister in laws ceiling for a day. Scared us his ribs were heaving in his effort to breathe. He is a healthy 18 year old.
Bollss · 29/11/2020 13:11

@justasking111 we've got done I'll put one on when I go back up! Thanks Smile

Some not done

@Reedwarbler 💐 it is beyond belief what has happened to your poor FIL and I know that it is no comfort, but I hope that the people who are responsible and have failed so badly in their duty of care to him are held accountable at some stage.

Remember when they said Tony Blair was teflon man, that now goes for every civil servant be they an MP or your local council.

DominaShantotto · 29/11/2020 13:49

DH has already killed one car battery by leaving his car idle now he's working from home - I make him go out to a costa drive thru every couple of weeks to keep some miles on the car for the occasions I need to use mine so he can't.

Aztectrousers · 29/11/2020 14:15

Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse this year ..........

TabbyStar · 29/11/2020 14:24

I took my DM's car out for a run this morning. It's somewhere to go! Apparently in some ways it's needed more nowadays because there are electrics running off the battery. My DM had to get hers replaced in the first lockdown.

Reedwarbler · 29/11/2020 14:32

@Evenstar we have engaged a solicitor on my fil's behalf to investigate his 'care', and we will sue if it is found to be at fault. The NHS have already admitted liability for his first broken hip because they neglected to assess his likelihood of a fall.
This travelling out and about while completing mundane tasks. I have recently discovered a very good butcher some miles away. I now go about once a month for a big shop for the freezer and I have a pootle about round the lanes while I'm at it, have a long chat with the butcher when I get there etc. It has become an outing! Ridiculous when you think that in normal times I would rush there and back because I've got more important and interesting things to do. We are thinking of moving to this area too, so it's a good opportunity to have a recce.

PinkFondantFancy · 29/11/2020 15:00

Hello everyone hope you're all doing ok. Have missed about 100 threads Smile I'm avoiding social media generally as I'm struggling with it but dipping my toe in the water here.

One of those grim, lurking, light-less November days here. Had a lie in. Went down to KFC drive-thru for lunch (not my favourite, but it counts as variety these days) got sent around the drive thru again because the card allegedly hadn't paid... the queue had now grown, then it turned out they muddled us up with the car behind... the DCs appreciated the extra fries. DH dumped me and the DCs so he could head home to do some work and rhe DCs and I walked back the scenic route, marred only by their ranting and wailing in the early stages. Grin

Had the opportunity to do a good turn. Behind KFC are some awkward steps and a lady was trying to work out the logistics of getting safely down the slimy, leaf strewn steps with her trolley. I was wearing walking boots so used the edge of my foot to scape the leaf mulch off the steps, then carried the trolley down. It's a long way round to do it step-free.
It was nice to do a random favour for the first time in yonks. I miss those kinds of random interractions with people that have been missing this year.

I am feeling so flat at the moment, not helped by having boss screaming down the phone at me on Friday because I couldn't find something online (even though she's logged on and could look herself) because 'she's soooo stressed'.

DH and I were cutting back DM's very overgrown front garden earlier, and he was very amused to see and hear me viciously attacking brambles muttering 'fuck Whitty, and Hancock and Johnson, and Gove and Vallance, and all the other wankers'. It made me feel a bit better.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/11/2020 16:19

That sounds wonderfully cathartic Grin

It was Grin. Am now at home doing online shopping (for me!) whilst DH is parked in front of the footie.....

110APiccadilly · 29/11/2020 16:31

Terrific, I've just lost (another) filling. Dentist hasn't been in touch yet about work that was scheduled for April that they were supposed to reschedule, so what's the chances I'll get an appointment to do anything about my two missing fillings? I'm going to lose teeth over this, aren't I? (And even if I get an appointment, are they going to let me bring my feeding baby? I bet not.)

justasking111 · 29/11/2020 16:37

@110APiccadilly start chasing the dentist, pretend you have toothache that seems to prioritise things keep pestering. The only other option is to go private I am afraid.
