We might be craving tiles, but we'll leave the woodchip and artex alone unless we're feeling very brave...

Welcome into another thread covering the whole range of life and death, novelty vegetables, DIY, any other randomness and musings about a certain pandemic.

I think the countywide approach to tiers has changed how a lot of people see things. If you live in a small town or a rural area in somewhere that has been escalated to Tier 2 or 3, it will have a big impact. People who have been following the “roolz” will now be finding they are a lot more onerous.

Justgivemewine · 29/11/2020 22:04

Forgot to add, it might be useful for dealing with school run dementors

Orangeblossom7777 · 29/11/2020 22:05

I guess, why practise anything beyond the basics you need? I often wish to have nicer things but feel like I am not worth it and I can't find any anyway

I know this feeling. Sometimes nice smells and e.g. a bubble bath can be relaxing for the mind. Music. exercise...feeling better not just looking a certain way..it is hard to get the effort for it sometimes but afterwards it can feel better

I have a new salted caramel hot choc by Divine which is a bit of a treat. and Baileys. I had baileys with ice cream in the bath today. candles are relaxing. Anything to distract the mind.

Also having hormonal stuff here really bad headache, 44 last week. Argh perimenopause I think. Dh is annoying me.

WouldBeGood · 29/11/2020 22:06

@ISaySteadyOn your post made me really sad. I’m a chubby middle aged woman but do make up etc every day. I find it just makes me feel better, no matter how fat or old I feel! I also do my nails at home with gel polish which i started in lockdown one. I used to get them done all the time and again it’s a small thing but helped me reclaim myself after a terrible time.

Tomorrow, try doing your hair, earrings and a bit of lippy 😊

TheOrchidKiller · 29/11/2020 22:09

I think the “art” just gets worse
Oh dear, did someone forget to turn the taps off in the birthing pool in that hospital?

DPs went to drop a birthday present off at a friend's yesterday. Friend was having a significant birthday. DPs rang the bell & retreated to the end of the drive whilst friend stood on the doorstep & they had a chat in the cold. They were watched the whole time by 2 neighbours. DPs had no intention of going inside but got the impression the neighbours were checking up on them. Horrible. But DPs sounded so much more cheerful for having seen their friend.

I took the pressure off today & chose to stay in. Going for a walk has become a chore, & it felt better to decide that I didn't have to go out. I'm lucky in that my children don't need taking out for a daily gallop anymore.

@ISaySteadyOn
Hope you have a better day tomorrow. And you are worth it.

ISaySteadyOn · 29/11/2020 22:19

Didn't mean to make anyone sad too. I am sorry about that. I think I do understand why people do things now, thank you.

Stupid sensory issues plus dyspraxia means makeup is a no go and my ears need re-piercing but I did have a bath which helped. And new books are coming in the post so there's that.

Plus I found out that a shop I loved still exists. Used to buy dice sets there! And now I can order from it.

@MercyBooth

Has anyone else been reading the thread in AIBU about the lockdown protesters.
Yes! I've seen you fighting the good fight But I was really encouraged by the responses on there: I think the tide is turning I really do
justasking111 · 29/11/2020 22:25

Well treated myself to a carpet cleaner/upholstery cleaner in the black friday sale, it arrived tonight. With two dogs a cat and messy grand kids, I thought why not, I do enjoy cleaning with gadgets.

Put on make up every day, but my perfumes are sadly neglected as are moisturising lotions. My legs need a hedge trimmer but hey ho I am living in leggings and xmas socks with slippers.

Am going with grand kids to garden centre on Tuesday to see all their xmas displays. I assume they will be locked down again on Friday.

Son has worked so hard on his new business, which will be shut down again. The grants, well Wales ran out of money (cough) so shut the scheme in less than two days so he lost out there as well. Rishi has given Wales the money but Dripford is building up a war chest it seems.

NannyGythaOgg · 29/11/2020 23:00

@ISaySteadyOn

I am feeling low today. It is the worst day of the month for me. High emotions and horrible cramps. It will pass but right now, I can't see the wood for the trees.

I also had a weird question. I was browsing that thread about indie shops and so many of them were soaps and jewelry. Now I practise basic self care that is, I wash and I brush my hair and I brush my teeth but beyond that, I don't quite understand why you would bother in these times unless it was to stop you biting your nails as pp said above.

I used to love to dress up and wear earrings but then I gained weight on antidepressants (off them before DC) . I've settled into a motherly shape now and I don't wear earrings anymore cos toddlers and earrings didn't mix.

But I haven't looked in a mirror for years as I really don't like my face (which makes my utter loathing of masks odd when you come to think of it). Damn it, there's a question in there somewhere but I can't find it.

I guess, why practise anything beyond the basics you need? I often wish to have nicer things but feel like I am not worth it and I can't find any anyway.

I'm with you to a large extent on this. Doing some cleaning. DIY, baking or anything that shows (even if only temporarily) does make me feel better.

Making the effort to have a shower, rather than just washing face and bits, also helps
BUT make up, or styling hair, just makes me feel even more pointless, when I have to sleep on it (or take it off) without anyone else even seeing it. I find it so depressing.

Pleasedontdothat · 29/11/2020 23:05

I’ve missed most of the last thread and you’re already up to 6 pages on this one Shock. It’s been busy here as we finally had DD’s psychiatry appointment - by the skin of our teeth as they phoned as we were parking outside the hospital to say the doctor she was supposed to be seeing couldn’t get there due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’ and offering her a phone appointment at some point in the future. At this point, I got cross ... and they managed to find a consultant who had a gap in his schedule (phew). He was lovely with dd - said her symptoms were textbook generalised anxiety disorder (very common comorbidity with ASD) and has prescribed medication which I hope will enable her to get through her exams next summer.

Yesterday I was out of action all day as I had the most hideous migraine and today I have thrown caution to the winds and bought dd a competition horse 😬. He’s a 6 year old Belgian warm blood and is absolutely lovely with the most amazing jump - I will be on tenterhooks until I know he’s passed his vetting. I know I have gone slightly mad but my dad left me a bit of money when he died and I wanted to use it in a way which would give me and dd a lot of pleasure.

MissEWeatherwax · 29/11/2020 23:21

What lovely gift Pleasedontdothat.
I have decided on a ski jump Christmas cake with royal icing( from box) because I found a Santa on ski’s. So thank you for the idea @NannyGythaOgg.

MercyBooth · 29/11/2020 23:39

My opposite neighbour was a right Stasi at the beginning of lockdown.
Seems to have changed her mind since her son started going out a lot and now they are having ppl over. So she has completely gone from one to the other.

AcornAutumn · 29/11/2020 23:44

It is taking every ounce of discipline not to post the song on the conservatory thread...someone has called it to totally bonkers but the song would cross a line and I’d get suspended, right?

MercyBooth · 30/11/2020 00:53

The usual ones have turned up on the protesters thread. There is something really sinister coming from certain posters but i cant articulate it.

If it’s one particular person, I think that’s another candidate for the “I lost my fucking mind” song. Absolute hysteria. Beyond what the government intended with their scaremongering.

Mum tells me to feel sorry for such people but I can’t. They’re sort of addicted to it. I think when Covid dies down, they will be lost and end up stopping electric trains in the name of Extinction Rebellion or that other that other more extreme group, the off shoot.

My friend who was arrested yesterday is working class, not a covid denier and a mother. She was in a dilemma about it because part of her issue is how much her children will suffer but being arrested was a PITA though she was home by 11 (that sounds funny).

Oh hang....that might be the unease you feel.

Like ER, the goal is disruption. That’s probably the goal of the posters you’re thinking of.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 30/11/2020 06:39

I was pleasantly surprised by the responses on the protest thread last time I saw it. You had some excellent and eloquent points @MercyBooth
My favourite quote from that thread "we're not Jesus".

There's also a thread in the 'ronazone about how the tory backbenchers just need to shut up. The OP in that sounds like she's just sat with her fingers in her ears la-la-la ing waiting for it all to just go away.

I mean, for God's sake when did it become acceptable to not want people to question the government? Especially a tinpot dictator like Bojo.

Reedwarbler · 30/11/2020 07:39

@Pleasedontdothat what a lovely present for your daughter - that will keep her busy.
I was always going to buy a horse when I retired - I used to have my own horses in my youth/20's and used to event, hunt, etc. I was idly browsing the other day and saw a horse that would be perfect for me, and it was £4k. Hmm. I then thought perhaps, at my age, another dog would be a safer option. I have got a red toy poodle who I love, so perhaps one to match? The only red toy poodle puppy I found was...£4k.
These were only time filling searches, in the same way I browse million pound properties, but, it makes you think, doesn't it?

Blobby10 · 30/11/2020 09:21

@Pleasedontdothat he sounds lovely! Bet your daughter is over the moon. My DD made a choice at 15 between riding and elite sport - she chose her sport because she could always go back to riding . My dad is 75 and still competing at Advanced Medium level and wants to do a PSG before he's 'done'!

I said to my OH last weekend that I miss having horses in my life far more than I miss the dogs but wouldn't 'do' horses again until I can commit to it fully.

rosettesforjill · 30/11/2020 09:47

I miss horse riding! I haven't been since I was 12 weeks pregnant with my oldest, who is now six. Never had my own but it was a childhood dream - maybe one day, although the expense and work scare me!

Iheartmysmart · 30/11/2020 10:17

I used to love horse riding as well. Sadly as I got older I realised I was crap at it and no longer bounced when I fell off! Several visits to A&E later I hung up my hard hat. Good job I don’t still go - would have bought the NHS to it’s knees singlehandedly. Imagine the granny deaths!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 30/11/2020 10:42

Putting our tree up today. Overdone the lights, can live with that....but cannot find DS elf?!!! Arggghhhh

As a complete aside, anyone else think Joe Biden looks like Captain America when he is an old man at the end of Endgame?

Curlygirl06 · 30/11/2020 11:05

No motivation here, supposed to be doing housework. Might just spray some polish about so it smells like I've done something!

Taswama · 30/11/2020 11:13

I've just taken up horse riding in my 40s. DS1 has been riding a couple of years but is only interested in the riding itself not the horse iyswim. Went on a pony camp (6 hours) once and said it was ok, but he preferred just riding. So no risk of horse ownership here!
