Life Changing Cleaning - Why Didn't I Know?

I can't believe I didn't know about rubber brooms before now! No word of a lie, it has changed my life - picks up dog fur from the stairs better than any hoover. My carpet is like new. This, after spending £s on Dyson. Anyone else got any brilliant cleaning tips?

Scouring powder??? What is that??? What does it look like???

Meanwhile I need to share that I emptied the under sink cupboard just to find a squeegee. Scrapping dog hair off the carpet is my treat for this afternoon.

Seriously though I need this thread. I'm on sick leave with stress- I need the occupational therapy!!!

nevernotstruggling · 23/11/2020 12:30

Ohhhh you mean Ajax and Vim!!

cactusisblooming · 23/11/2020 12:36

I have white bathroom floor tiles that have tiny grooves in them and they get absolutely filthy. The rubber broom is amazing for cleaning them; just thrown down a small amount of very soapy water and scrub it it with broom, then use a mop to remove excess water.

FanFckingTastic · 23/11/2020 12:41

I've read the whole thread and only seen one mention of Zoflora!! I'm absolutely addicted to it. I make up a bowl and wipe my sides down with it, my leather sofas, my walls, skirting boards etc etc. I wipe windows and mirrors with it using a soft cloth and they come up great - no streaks. I chuck a bit of Zoflora down the loo and in the sink overnight and in the morning they are lovely and clean and smell good. I also put a splash in my washing machine when I wash my towels. I also have some diluted in a spray bottle and I give my bedsheets and mattress a spritz with it every now and then. My husband jokes that if he stands still for long enough I would Zoflora him and actually this is probably true. It disinfects and smells delish - what's not to love :-)

@Jedstre
For granite countertops try spraying with White vinegar then wipe, then buff with a clean tea towel

teawamutu · 23/11/2020 12:55

@goingtotown

Mould on bath sealant. Soak toilet roll with thick bleach, push onto sealant & leave overnight. It’s like magic.
Did this the other day. Can confirm, is witchcraft.

I calmed down with the zoflora when it broke my steam mop.

Then the lemon flavour was really hard to find and I got bored.

I think I've defected to Fabulosa they have more exciting scents. I'm in love with the rainbow drops one it smells like ribena. They sell mini spray bottles I keep them in my own bag (best you don't ask why!!)

Meanwhile zoflora/fabulosa/any strong smelling disinfectant - I use it to clean the hard surfaces in the car and then spray the upholstery. I have a spaniel and he makes the car smell gopping. The above helps.

userxx · 23/11/2020 13:10

car smell gopping

Not heard that for years!!! Fabulosa is so much better than Zoflora, the lemon one is gorgeous.

Farewelltoqualms · 23/11/2020 13:17

Very educational thread! Almost inspired to do some cleaning. Almost...

^^ I was thinking the same thing Picklemewalnuts!

nevernotstruggling · 23/11/2020 13:30

@userxx I'm happy with either BUT zoflora should have chucked the spray bottle product line out it would have sold out. Also zoflora is a bit old fashioned. Fabulosa is quite jazzy - my dds are quite keen on it. It's more modern 😀

userxx · 23/11/2020 13:35

@nevernotstruggling Do you clean your car with the neat stuff or the spray bottles ? I've not seen any mini ones, only the big ones.

Darls3000 · 23/11/2020 13:41
@Darls3000 you can get an enzyme spray from pet shops or Amazon to remove the odour dogs leave.
Thanks for this. Had tried with one I bought in Amazon but it didn't seem to work outdoors like it did indoors. Will try another brand.

Darls3000 · 23/11/2020 13:42
@Darls3000 is there a place you want the dog to poo? Just take them out on the lead and make them go there until they get the idea. My dog is only allowed to poo on the bark chips behind the shed. He knows!
Oh we tried with this but in all honesty gave up too soon. I'll try again. It's stopped us wanting to use the garden even if we've removed all trace.

nevernotstruggling · 23/11/2020 14:03

@Darls3000 I can help x so when I moved to this house I was determined the dog wouldn't poo free reign and I was very strict with him. I followed a friend advice (whose dog almost has a litter tray type set up in the garden and and it works really well). You choose the spot and it has to be quite apparent so a corner is good for example. Then you take them out on the lead for a while then when they poo you make a huge fuss of them. They will get it. It's like when you house train them. Ddog is let out when I get up and he must poo before I let him back in for breakfast. If I see him sniffing in the wrong place I will go out there and stand over him. Dogs like routine. We do the same in the evening. He knows when he sees me bag the poo it's food time!
Any other time he's not allowed to play in the garden until he's poo'd. Once he's done it he's ok to play on the grass with us.
If he poos anywhere else he's told off and sent back inside. He does break rank but not often.
What upsets it is if anyone opens the back door and doesn't watch him!!! Finding a poo I didn't know about makes me v angry. There's no need for a poo to languish!!!

I also make the dog poo next to the dog bin on walks so I can bin it straight away- no thanks to a poo bag accessory for an hour!!! But actually being really consistent that he has to poo on command helps a lot xxx

Ddot · 23/11/2020 14:12

Blueberrycreampie
Peek polish for metal is amazing

Ddot · 23/11/2020 14:16

I tied Dettol disinfectant lavender and orange it smells lovely. I bought from cheap pound shop.

Darls3000 · 23/11/2020 14:19

Nevernotstruggling that is astonishing training. Ok I'm going to try because I can't bear the way it is at the moment and I just need to train her properly this time thanks

Ginfordinner · 23/11/2020 14:24

@Flatpackback

Ooh, I've just bought a radiator brush. I had no idea such a thing existed, loving this thread. Anyone got ideas for cleaning a cream fireplace? The care instructions said to just use a damp microfiber cloth but after several years use it could do with something with more umph but I'm wary of staining it with chemicals. I've used those white scuff pads on the odd mark and that's done the job but I don't think I could do the whole thing with one.
Wipe with a cloth using a bleach solution. Honestly, it really works.
nevernotstruggling · 23/11/2020 14:30

@Darls3000 you're more than welcome xx also dogs adore the routine and want to please you. They will get the idea. Totally worth it if you can get the garden back!!

I don't have Astro but my friend cleans hers with zoflora is that not doing it?

nevernotstruggling · 23/11/2020 14:31

@Darls3000 last one I sound poo obsessed! You might want to be very firm with whoever you live with that this is the deal now or the dog will be a bit confused and it will take longer xx

Ddot · 23/11/2020 15:44

Bit off topic but I'm going to let you into a wonderful trick. Veg in fridge drawer put a tea towel over the top of veg, salad. It will last three times longer I promise

nevernotstruggling · 23/11/2020 15:52

@Ddot I line the salad drawers with tea towels. Mostly to soak up the moisture but it does appear to help with preservation!

Notusuallydown · 23/11/2020 15:59

I have a sheepskin coat I inherited, unfortunately it's very dirty. It's a good quality coat, can I clean it?

dontcallmelen · 23/11/2020 16:05

Omg sorry I can’t find the post now, but thank you who ever recommended trying diluted fabric softener for cleaning Windows & glass, mine are sparkling & streak free tis amazing.

Savoretti · 23/11/2020 16:08

Just read the thread while rubbing a dishwasher tablet over my burned ceramic hob
