Life Changing Cleaning - Why Didn't I Know?

I can't believe I didn't know about rubber brooms before now! No word of a lie, it has changed my life - picks up dog fur from the stairs better than any hoover. My carpet is like new. This, after spending £s on Dyson. Anyone else got any brilliant cleaning tips?

Yes, I do the same with socks!
My best tip: keep a (new, unused) toothbrush by the kitchen sink as a washing up tool. Great for stubborn bits between fork prongs and slotted spoon slots . Cleans the threads in the screw top of my blender and other awkward places with ease.
I use a small (kids’) toothbrush for grooming my cats’ faces. They love it!
Used toothbrushes are essential for scrubbing shoes and trainers (especially between the ridges on the soles). Also use them to clean grooves in window frames, grouting, skirting boards, taps etc

@Ddot - Yes I am aware thanks but trying to avoid the faff and cost for as long as possible. It's not too bad at the moment so hoping for a magical cleaning solution

@Darls3000 is there a place you want the dog to poo? Just take them out on the lead and make them go there until they get the idea. My dog is only allowed to poo on the bark chips behind the shed. He knows!

@IrmaFayLear

My tip I only discovered last week was cleaning the microwave with a lemon. After yet another soup explosion which had been left by someone to dry on angry I tried an old lemon halved and microwaved for a few minutes. Boy, all the old gunk all round the sides and top just slid off, like magic, and no stink of chemicals!

Thanks for that one nice clean microwave here

Citric acid for descaling kettles stérilisés etc etc
And W5 bathroom cleaner for showers a fraction of the price of other cleaning products and removes the limescale build up on showers ..
Milton tablet in the loo
And loo brush holder with a little water ..
Cif cream the white one much better than the pink stuff

nannykatherine · 23/11/2020 08:58

Also what I need to know is when you’ve cleaned everything with the rubber broom , how do you clean the rubber broom ????

Rubay · 23/11/2020 08:59

Just found this! Im tackling the shower in the ensuite today (think nightmare 'needs a clean!)- I've still got Dd2 in my bedroom and it's so difficult to air out chemical smells!

I've just bought a flash powermop, but cubical (hardwater nightmare), pipes, toilet (theres a gap between base and wall, how to clean properly!??), wall tiles (small squares)....
Where do I start?? What's best to use??

I've bought a bag of lemons......

Rubay · 23/11/2020 09:02

@nannykatherine That's a start for me! Wink

nannykatherine · 23/11/2020 09:02

Also if you burn a saucepan just use a little washing up liquid and water and simmer until it comes off easily

picklemewalnuts · 23/11/2020 09:12

Very educational thread! Almost inspired to do some cleaning. Almost...

Liquid soap on mirrors is really good for stopping them steaming up. Helps with cleaning them too, a wipe with a flannel seems to get everything off without leaving anything behind. Just a dab, rubbed all over it then wiped away. Works on (spectacles) glasses too.

Really need something to make my stainless steel sink shiny again, please!

Ginfordinner · 23/11/2020 09:53

Bleach. It makes a huge difference

Hillary4 · 23/11/2020 09:56

Squee gee for do hair from carpets, it comes up like new and a big bag of hair too

Vinegar for limescale in wet rooms, toilet roll snug around taps and wastes, drench with vinegar, leave a day and brush off with old toothbrush

Bleach for white china sinks, nothing abrasive, leave full all day, empty and rinse, snow white

Try magic sponge, little white squares of pure fabulousness

knickerbockerglory33 · 23/11/2020 11:00

Do you think a rubber broom would get the cobwebs off a stippled ceiling? a duster just gets stuck to the stipples and clumps the cobwebs together in the crevices...if not a rubber broom, any other tips? I use the brush head on the vacuum but not 100% effective and DP finds it hilarious that i am hoovering the ceiling (my argument is that i cant do the floor because of all his, and the kids' ) Smile

Flatpackback · 23/11/2020 11:01

Drumst1ck

I soak them in a bucket with a dishwasher tablet. Stand them on end leave for a few hours then turn them round & soak the other end. Most of the gunk will then come off easily or with minimum effort.

nevernotstruggling · 23/11/2020 11:01

Sticky stuff remover spray is much easier than the one in the bottle. Stinks though.

Flatpackback · 23/11/2020 11:15

Ooh, I've just bought a radiator brush. I had no idea such a thing existed, loving this thread. Anyone got ideas for cleaning a cream fireplace? The care instructions said to just use a damp microfiber cloth but after several years use it could do with something with more umph but I'm wary of staining it with chemicals. I've used those white scuff pads on the odd mark and that's done the job but I don't think I could do the whole thing with one.

I bought a vintage brooch that had enamel on it, was very expensive make but i got cheep because it was damaged. Thought i would have a go at mending. I cleaned with magic sponge it was miraculous. Only needed to spray it with can of sealer. Not saying u should do that but sponge may help x

movingonup20 · 23/11/2020 12:00

My top tip is old fashioned scouring powder, hard to get (only the Asian supermarkets seem to have it) but it's the best for cleaning bathrooms and dirt cheap. Actually got it brought it back from holiday, I'm sure that confused customers, a tube of white powder Grin

movingonup20 · 23/11/2020 12:02

Oh and screwed up newspaper for mirrors and glass works, I'm big on vinegar too. Trying to get a bit greener

cactusisblooming · 23/11/2020 12:05

@Blueberrycreampie I bought one of those dishomatic stick things with a sponge on the end that you fill with whatever you want. I put diluted bleach in mine and give it a light swich over every time I do the dishes. My sink is gleaming for the first time in years.
