Do you have a favourite hymn or hymns ?

I'm not remotely religious so asking this question probably makes me a hypocrite but anyway. Most of us were exposed to the rite-of-passage primary school dirges such as When A Knight Won His Spurs (I'm not sure that's even a hymn) and The Golden Cockerel but I'd be surprised if the likes of these featured in a Christian Church service. But, to answer my own question, I think Abide With Me is my favourite, followed closely by Morning Has Broken. I concede these might be popular choices but I don't know that many hymns to begin with Halo.

The Servant King.
Thine be the glory.
This is our God.

Oh my goodness what a hard question to answer. I guess the most meaningful to me are: Sweet Sacrament Divine, Lord for the Years and The Servant Song.

Catholic school here but....
Oh Lord my God
When I'm in awesome wonder....

Well. All I can see is my mother's coffin leaving her church. It leaves me sobbing every time. 30 years later.

Just came on to say that I absolutely loved Lord of the Dance from my Catholic primary school days 😍 It's one of the few hymns I can still sing to this day 😁
NannyR · 10/11/2020 20:27

My favourite hymns (rather than worship songs) are Oh Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, Great is thy faithfulness and And can it be.

AtomicSquash · 10/11/2020 20:29

Love 'Be Thou My Vision' we had it at our wedding.

The clouds veil
Only a shadow of your love for me
On eagle's wings
(Catholic)

HalfBloodPrincess · 10/11/2020 20:31

Make me a channel of your peace.

We sang this in school and I’ve always loved it.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 10/11/2020 20:31

I also love all the ones other are mentioning. I think I just love hymns/worship songs in general (although I'm not sure what the difference is)

Mollscroll · 10/11/2020 20:31

To be a pilgrim
At the name of Jesus
Dear Lord and father of mankind
Bread of Heaven

I’ve also always loved Morning has Broken.

PoltergeistPirates · 10/11/2020 20:34

Lord of the Dance is lovely! We sang it at my cousin’s wedding.

I’m not religious either, but I do like a nice hymn, or even better, a Christmas carol!

jennytheonionslayer · 10/11/2020 20:34

No, no I don't.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 10/11/2020 20:35

Primary school days

Autumn days
Morning has broken
One more step along the world I go
Give me oil in my lamp

WildRosie · 10/11/2020 20:38

I don't know the difference between a hymn and a worship song either. Elvis Presley sang How Great Thou Art - is that a spiritual, a hymn, worship song or something else ?
I also haven't heard of many of the hymns on here - shows what I know!

I grew up singing in a traditional church choir and then University Choir that was not all church music, but quite formal nonetheless, and I lead sung worship in our current church, but it is modern worship (guitar drums bass). I still find myself singing a lot of the stuff I grew up with when I am toddling about the house (and indeed the church, where I work in admin).

This is Our God
Now the green blade riseth
And can it be
Waymaker
Holding Nothing Back (although, I have to really really concentrate on not singing ‘the plate is clean’ in place of ‘the slate is clean’)

I miss singing with a congregation so so much. We’ve recorded stuff for services and live streamed worship and it’s lovely, but it’s not the same.

PoltergeistPirates · 10/11/2020 20:39

The one that had the line, “I was cold I was naked” always raised a snigger at primary school.

Hippychickster · 10/11/2020 20:40

Lord of all hopefulness.
Jerusalem.

I love hymns, so many great tunes and poetic words! It’s nice to sing along to Radio 4 8am-ish Sunday service in a deep bath. “Tell out my soul” is a favourite alongside many already mentioned. And I have a soft spot for “And can it be that I should gain” because the line about “my chains fell off” always made me and my siblings laugh so much as children.

ClaireP20 · 10/11/2020 20:42

Yes Abide with me always has me in tears. I really love 'Dance then wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the Dance said he..' I like it so much I had it during my wedding - the whole song, even though the vicar wanted it shortened! Xx

Sometimesonly · 10/11/2020 20:42

Lots but if I have to choose one it would be Tell out my Soul.

MrsMoastyToasty · 10/11/2020 20:43

Jerusalem
Dear Lord and Father of mankind.
The Charterhouse Carol.

Hailtomyteeth · 10/11/2020 20:44

Loads.

Breathe on me Breath of God is the first that comes to mind.
Father We Adore You and Led Like a Lamb.
For all the Saints.
Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken.
Through the Night of Doubt and Sorrow.

Popcornismandatory · 10/11/2020 20:44

I went to a very religious primary but am not at all religious now however I adore 'We Plough The Fields' - always sang at Harvest Festival and have a soft spot for 'All Things Bright And Beautiful'
