Dog food bowl in dishwasher

timeforanewstart · 07/11/2020 18:06

So just went to give dog water and noticed dh hasn't washed his bowl since giving him wet food weds/thurs
night !!! Its dh job to feed him etc so I hadn't noticed, it wasn't loads just a few clearly dried on bits.
I have just wiped off dried up food with tissue then rinsed out in bathroom sink with a little washing up liquid ( sink is full of stuff soaking from dinner ) and god knows where my dishcloth has gone .
Normally he has mostly kibble with the odd wet food pouch , but my kibble delivery was late so he has had wet food weds / thurs dried from yesterday .
Going forward would we be better putting bowl in dishwasher nightly? In just not sure about dog bowl in with our stuff?
Or a quick wash like today in the bathroom / kitchen sink adequate?
Generally speaking wouldn't be 3 days dried food on it as guess it will have to be another job I take on as dh seems to just ignore that it needs washing .

I put my cats bowl in every night on a 70 degree cycle. They have raw meat and I think what I do is far more hygienic than hand washing it.

MobLife · 07/11/2020 20:25

Doesn't dog and cat food actually get tried by humans though? I'm sure I saw a documentary about this where it was taste tested, which would probably assure us all of the BSE issue

Do prions live on ceramic surfaces I wonder?

AbbeyRoadNW8 · 07/11/2020 20:28

A dishwasher cleans it does not sterilize. If you saw what they put into dog/cat food you would be shocked. Dog food is not for human consumption for a reason. I agree any most bacteria/virus should be eliminated in the dishwasher but prions will not. I personally would not take the risk. Hot soapy water and wipe over with disinfectant is sufficient to clean the bowl for a dog to use it does not need to go in the dishwasher.

Dog and cat food in the UK is tested by humans.
OddHoleySocks · 07/11/2020 20:30

Dog food in this country is cooked and fit for human consumption

Dogs 'kisses' get washed off hands by water much cooler than dishwasher water

Things with raw chicken on go in the dishwasher

How on earth could it possibly be a hygiene issue?

AbbeyRoadNW8 · 07/11/2020 20:35

@SimonJT Dog and Cat food are tested by humans. So are pharmaceuticals but I would not want to do it. I must admit I am surprised anyone would want to eat dog food. I have seen the offal from an abattoir destined for dog food, I would not have eaten it.

OddHoleySocks · 07/11/2020 20:37

I don't think anyone wants to eat pet food, but as its okay to do so, why would it not be okay in the dishwasher?

AbbeyRoadNW8 · 07/11/2020 20:40

@OddHoleySocks Cooking does not destroy Prions. If they are not present then I'm sure it would be safe as viruses and bacteria will be killed . My concern is if BSE does happen again and we don't know for a several months (like last time) it could be a safety concern.

OddHoleySocks · 07/11/2020 20:42

Are you saying that food fit for human consumption is likely to have prions?

I don't think that pet food is the biggest concern in that case...

AbbeyRoadNW8 · 07/11/2020 20:48

@OddHoleySocks No I'm not saying that food fit for human consumption contains prions. If prions are present they are usually found in the spinal cord and brain tissue. We don't eat them generally so it is not a big concern but they could be present in animal food. And as far as we know there are not any BSE cases likely to get into the food chain. So it should not be an issue.

ktp100 · 07/11/2020 20:49

I couldn't put our cats bowl in the dishwasher.

Just eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwww!!!!

OddHoleySocks · 07/11/2020 20:51

It's a good thing that there is legislation against them entering the food chain at all then, isn't it?

PollyRoulson · 07/11/2020 20:53

@Deadringer

You need a separate dishwasher for pets dishes. Also a separate kitchen, actually ideally a completely separate house because those fuckers get everywhere and might touch stuff with their filthy mouths and bodies. Also putting dirty dishes in a dishwasher is disgusting, you need to scrub them clean before they go in. then set fire to them
Hides head in shame. I do have a separate dishwasher for the animals Shock but in my defence I do have a lot of them - animals that is
RaininSummer · 07/11/2020 20:53

Crikey. I am a terrible skank it seems as I have always washed the dog's bowl by hand in the kitchen sink.

userxx · 07/11/2020 20:57

Just eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwww!!!!

Fucking hell, bit OTT isn't it 🙄

AbbeyRoadNW8 · 07/11/2020 20:57

@OddHoleySocks It's a good thing that there is legislation against them entering the food chain at all then, isn't it?

Exactly, I agree completely. If everyone abides by the rules we will be absolutely fine.

I'm not a biologist or a geneticist so I'm not an expert on the subject. I'm a retired pharmaceutical chemist but all I'm saying is that I would not put a dogs bowl in the dishwasher. I'm probably over cautious. Many of my colleagues continued to eat beef during the BSE crisis and thought I was over reacting.

timeforanewstart · 07/11/2020 21:01

And i was worried about salmonella or something not bse even botulism crossed my mind but not for a second did bse
I thought dog food had fo be safe here as well , the kibble i use claims to use decent meat etc?
The pouches were winalot i have no idea what they put in them .
I cAn 't give blood anymore due to having a blood transfusion because of risk of cjd for some reason as well

@timeforanewstart Dog food probably is safe, so I would not worry too much. I'm just saying I would not put dog bowls in the dishwasher.

GreasyFryUp · 07/11/2020 21:10

Ah Mumsnet, how entertaining you are. Makes a change from how often you wash your towels or change your bedding.

m0therofdragons · 07/11/2020 21:11

Do people have dogs that leave food in their bowl? Ddog has high quality kibble and meet. He licks it clean then I put it in the dishwasher. If he licks my hands I wash them with warm water and soap so pretty sure the dishwasher will do a good enough job.

Human bites and animal bites get treated the same at a+e, mouths are pretty foetid places 🤷🏻‍♀️.

I’d be more worried about the dog tbh, vet bills are expensive.

Pipandmum · 07/11/2020 21:29

Wow people are extremely fastidious! Most people I know with dogs let them lick their dinner plates before putting in the dishwasher so don't see a difference with dog bowls.

PatsyJStone · 07/11/2020 21:35

Time you really don’t need to explain what you do to anyone. Your life, your decisions! Doubt you are going to get struck down as a result of how you clean the dog bowls. Hope your dog brings you lots of joy, as mine does me x

userxx · 07/11/2020 21:37

Dog and cat food in the UK is tested by humans.

This is true, I've tried a few cat biscuits after having one wine too many.

timeforanewstart · 07/11/2020 21:42

@PatsyJStone thanks , yes he is a great dog and worth it , even if he does take a lot of caring for and cleaning up after Smile
