Dog food bowl in dishwasher

So just went to give dog water and noticed dh hasn't washed his bowl since giving him wet food weds/thurs
night !!! Its dh job to feed him etc so I hadn't noticed, it wasn't loads just a few clearly dried on bits.
I have just wiped off dried up food with tissue then rinsed out in bathroom sink with a little washing up liquid ( sink is full of stuff soaking from dinner ) and god knows where my dishcloth has gone .
Normally he has mostly kibble with the odd wet food pouch , but my kibble delivery was late so he has had wet food weds / thurs dried from yesterday .
Going forward would we be better putting bowl in dishwasher nightly? In just not sure about dog bowl in with our stuff?
Or a quick wash like today in the bathroom / kitchen sink adequate?
Generally speaking wouldn't be 3 days dried food on it as guess it will have to be another job I take on as dh seems to just ignore that it needs washing .

A few of the responses on here are hilarious. You'd think dogs were served up shit to eat out of their bowls. I honestly wonder how some people manage to get on in the big bad world Grin

@Didntgetmydiamondring

When I saw SIL taking the dog bowls out of the dishwasher and then the plates for our breakfast I suddenly decided I wasn’t hungry.

Yes, I know the water is hot, but dogs lick their behinds. I don’t want their food bowls washed with my dinner plate!

We always wash our dog & cat bowls by hand, they have their own sponge and tea towel and the sink is bleached afterwards.

Lots of humans also lick genitals, before you eat somewhere do you check that none of the householders have oral sex?
Parkandride · 07/11/2020 19:17

Dog stuff goes in altogether (bowls, kongs, feeding mat, balls etc) on its own on the hottest wash once in a while, not sure why as I'm not a hygiene nut but it would feel weird to put it with human stuff. By hand the rest of the time.

I’d never lit pet stuff into a dishwasher. I wash pet bowls first thing in the morning as I give them their breakfast in new bowl. I also would never wash pet stuff in a bathroom sink.

@SimonJT 😂😂😂

Blurring the boundaries of acceptable hygiene.GrinGrinGrin

I can’t imagine how you could possibly think of doing this OP, I mean it’s almost as if washing the bowl at super high temperature in a dishwasher so that any germs or etc are blitzed to oblivion makes it acceptable or something. Wink

fruitpastille · 07/11/2020 19:26

I put chopping board and knife in the dishwasher after preparing raw chicken. I can't see why a dog bowl would be worse.

timeforanewstart · 07/11/2020 19:27

@Heronlanyon where do you wash then in the kitchen sink , I only originally washed in small downstair bathroom sink as casserole dish was soaking in the kitchen sink
But really bathroom sink is prob no less hygenic and in fact its only used for washing hands so no other food items get washed in there and I did spray with some anti bac after .

I've always put the dig bowls in the dishwasher. I used to put the cat bowls in too when we had him.

We are all still here.

timeforanewstart · 07/11/2020 19:32

@PatsyJStone we always tip out his water daily and re fill and not just top up
He has 3 bowls all stainless steel but one is a bit bent and battered so tend to use for water as its also bigger , may pick him up another food bowl but Im thinking as long as cleaned once in evening should be enough

Mumsnet always makes me feel like stig of the dump.

I don't let my dogs lick my face of anything, but honestly, there are worse things in my dishwasher than the dog bowl. Chopping board that's touched raw meat, for one. I trust the washing machine to kill the germs, that's surely what it's for.

EcoCustard · 07/11/2020 19:38

Our dogs bowls go through the dishwasher daily. I used to do the cat bowl daily when she was alive. I also put the toddler loo seat, bathroom step, and many other items through a cycle. It’s hot, and cleans everything really well. More hygenic than hand washing in a sink.

Deadringer · 07/11/2020 19:39

Why would a dog need his own bowl anyway?

AbbeyRoadNW8 · 07/11/2020 19:51

Do you remember BSE (Mad Cow Disease)? It could jump to humans in the form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. It was caused by animals eating feed contaminated from other cows which had the disease. The cause were prions and were generally found present in the brain and spinal cord.

If dog food still contains these components, which I suspect it does there is the potential that if you wash the dog bowls in your dishwasher it could transfer to the rest of the contents of the dishwasher.

Prions are incredibly hard to destroy and simply putting them in a dishwasher will not work.

I know that BSE may seem like a blast from the past but I would not take the risk. I wash the dogs bowls out in the utility room sink where no food preparation takes place.

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/11/2020 19:52

@Riapia

Put pet food bowls in the dishwasher when you do the toilet brush.
Omg you’ve just admitted to having a loo brush. Grin
timeforanewstart · 07/11/2020 20:02

@AbbeyRoadNW8 moat of us won't have a utility sink though ?
I washed in little downstair loo sink first off as dh clearly hadn't washed it for a couple days and he had wet food as i figured no food things go in bathroom sink that it would ne more hygenic in there as days old dried bits .
Normally he has dried food and not beef anyway so wouldn't be of much of a concern.
I then washed all his bowls in kitchen sink in hot soapy water which I then sprayed out with flash with bleach cleaner - hopefully nothing much survives that
I did also spray bathroom sink with anti bac that is kept in there after washing bowl
But it seems a lot to go through to just clean some bowls

BananaPop2020 · 07/11/2020 20:05

@AbbeyRoadNW8 that’s a bit of a reach isn’t it?

Ideasplease322 · 07/11/2020 20:10

I use the dishwasher for the cats bowls. I rinse them first and always put them on a very high wash.

AbbeyRoadNW8 · 07/11/2020 20:12

@timeforanewstart You never really know what they put in animal food. I mean even beef mince, pork mince, burgers etc have been found to contain meat from other animals in them. I would use a a bucket with hot soapy water if I did not have another sink.

Prions can't be killed by bleach look up on Wikipedia how the WHO recommends how to destroy them.

Its probably not an issue any more as there don't seem to be any recent cases. But it could happen again potentially. Most people need not worry as it can take many years to affect humans but I would be concerned if I had young children.

I worked in pharmaceuticals and found out about BSE about 18 months before it became common knowledge. I immediately stopped my family eating beef or things containing gelatine.

Tootsietoot · 07/11/2020 20:12

Oh god the thought is vile. I have two dogs and a pretty low standard of hygiene but I've never sunk that low

PuppyMonkey · 07/11/2020 20:16

@Tootsietoot what do you imagine will happen in the dishwasher that is so vile? Confused

MadCatLady71 · 07/11/2020 20:16

My dog and cat bowls get hand washed after every meal (with detergent) then go in the dishwasher overnight. Surely that’s the best way to get rid of any germs? It is what the dishwasher is designed for, after all. I also disinfect the dog’s bowls weekly, as he is on a raw diet so I want to make extra sure he’s not exposed to anything nasty.

I also put his toys, blankets etc in the washing machine. It’s never even occurred to me not to.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/11/2020 20:17

We always put the cats dishes in with everything else, it’s the most hygienic way to clean things.

Some people must be doing separate knicker washes too.

jengamaster · 07/11/2020 20:18

But a dishwasher cleans abs sterilises so it will all come out clean abs hygienic. Even a mooncup.
