Dog food bowl in dishwasher

So just went to give dog water and noticed dh hasn't washed his bowl since giving him wet food weds/thurs
night !!! Its dh job to feed him etc so I hadn't noticed, it wasn't loads just a few clearly dried on bits.
I have just wiped off dried up food with tissue then rinsed out in bathroom sink with a little washing up liquid ( sink is full of stuff soaking from dinner ) and god knows where my dishcloth has gone .
Normally he has mostly kibble with the odd wet food pouch , but my kibble delivery was late so he has had wet food weds / thurs dried from yesterday .
Going forward would we be better putting bowl in dishwasher nightly? In just not sure about dog bowl in with our stuff?
Or a quick wash like today in the bathroom / kitchen sink adequate?
Generally speaking wouldn't be 3 days dried food on it as guess it will have to be another job I take on as dh seems to just ignore that it needs washing .

Ours go in the dishwasher. If you're not doing that you need to wash them really thoroughly with hot water and washing up liquid to make sure you get the biofilm off, it can make them sick otherwise.

@emilyfrost so what is acceptable hygiene then?

MrsPernicious · 07/11/2020 18:34

I give the dog bowl a quick hand wash and then put it in the dishwasher. We have 5 bowls so that she can have a clean one every meal.
Why wouldn't you?

I have cats and dogs - of course their bowls go in the dishwasher. It washes far hotter than my hands could deal with for one thing. Seems crazy to have a dishwasher then not use it for dishes..... (jury’s out for me on toilet brushes though...lol)

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 07/11/2020 18:36

We put the dog and cat bowls in the dishwasher. It’s just food and they lick us anyway. The dishwasher cleans everything.

I’d be much more bothered about the dog eating from a bowl that isn’t clean. Our animals have a clean bowl for each meal.

charliebear78 · 07/11/2020 18:39

My dogs get fed twice a day, they have stainless steel bowls and these go in the dishwasher after each feed
Same with our cat bowls..never thought to worry about it

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 07/11/2020 18:42

Cat bowls go in the dishwasher nightly, water bowl is rinsed daily and put through the dishwasher weekly.

Not sure why people think it unhygienic ... far more hygienic than the washing up bowl

exLtEveDallas · 07/11/2020 18:42

Yes of course it goes in the dishwasher. It’s a bit of dog spit, not bubonic plague.

SimonJT · 07/11/2020 18:42

@emilyfrost

Oh god that’s absolutely vile. What is it with animal owners and blurring the boundaries of acceptable hygiene? 🤮
Do you understand what a dishwasher actually does?
zaphodbeeble · 07/11/2020 18:44

People are so weird about hygiene on mn

LoseLooseLucy · 07/11/2020 18:46

My dog’s dishes go in the dishwasher 🤷‍♀️

Deadringer · 07/11/2020 18:46

You need a separate dishwasher for pets dishes. Also a separate kitchen, actually ideally a completely separate house because those fuckers get everywhere and might touch stuff with their filthy mouths and bodies. Also putting dirty dishes in a dishwasher is disgusting, you need to scrub them clean before they go in. then set fire to them

well...I would sooner share the dog bowl than eat from the toilet seat with the toilet brush

that's not just blurring the boundaries of acceptable hygiene it's erasing them completely....if people wish to be squirly about germs and cross contamination.

timeforanewstart · 07/11/2020 18:50

Ok decided that as usually dry food a quick wipe after every meal and then in dishwasher every couple days
Generally he has dried food so not too messy
Just given all 3 bowls a good wash in kitchen sink in hot soapy water and then he can have tonight , quick wipe then in dishwasher for a through clean
As i had to clean sink out after and chuck cloth washing his bowls anyway , its got to be easier using dishwasher in long term .
I wouldn't want to clean toilet brushes , toilet seats or cook in my dishwasher though i hope people are only joking when they say this !!
That would send me over the edge

I put the cat and dog food bowls and utensils into the dishwasher.
The dog food is cooked in the pressure cooker, so why wouldn’t you wash them in the dishwasher?

I wash the chicken feeders by hand because they’re an odd shape but if they fitted, they’d probably go in there as well. 🤷🏻‍♀️

rainywindows · 07/11/2020 18:53

we put dog bowls in dishwasher, it sterilises it

VinylDetective · 07/11/2020 18:54

Our dog has three bowls. The dirty one goes in the dishwasher after every meal. Why on earth wouldn’t you?

timeforanewstart · 07/11/2020 18:55

@Deadringer i do know someone who washes there dishes throughly by hand then uses dishwasher , which then gets washed throughly
Im not that bad ! I just chuck a dishwasher cleaner tablet it whenever I remember .
But having a dog is like a child , washing beds weekly and the hair is a nightmare , wooden floors and hair aren't as good a mix as you think . You hoover and just sitting there wit your coffee and all these clumps of hair come floating out of nowhere , hidden in the carpet was prob midly preferable
Good job he is cute aa he is harder work than the kids at times

TheSandman · 07/11/2020 18:58

RelaisBlu · 07/11/2020 19:00

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/11/2020 19:07

Our cat has loads of different wet food dishes, and gets a fresh one for breakfast and dinner. Biscuit bowl changed weekly. They all go in the dishwasher.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/11/2020 19:09

Our dog bowls go in the dishwasher, don’t see the problem.

PatsyJStone · 07/11/2020 19:09

You need a few bowls so the dog has a clean one every day. Also don’t forget to clean the water dish regularly, don’t leave it for days and just top it up.

I rinse our dog bowls then put in the dishwasher. We are all still alive!

Didntgetmydiamondring · 07/11/2020 19:13

When I saw SIL taking the dog bowls out of the dishwasher and then the plates for our breakfast I suddenly decided I wasn’t hungry.

Yes, I know the water is hot, but dogs lick their behinds. I don’t want their food bowls washed with my dinner plate!

We always wash our dog & cat bowls by hand, they have their own sponge and tea towel and the sink is bleached afterwards.
