Dog food bowl in dishwasher

So just went to give dog water and noticed dh hasn't washed his bowl since giving him wet food weds/thurs
night !!! Its dh job to feed him etc so I hadn't noticed, it wasn't loads just a few clearly dried on bits.
I have just wiped off dried up food with tissue then rinsed out in bathroom sink with a little washing up liquid ( sink is full of stuff soaking from dinner ) and god knows where my dishcloth has gone .
Normally he has mostly kibble with the odd wet food pouch , but my kibble delivery was late so he has had wet food weds / thurs dried from yesterday .
Going forward would we be better putting bowl in dishwasher nightly? In just not sure about dog bowl in with our stuff?
Or a quick wash like today in the bathroom / kitchen sink adequate?
Generally speaking wouldn't be 3 days dried food on it as guess it will have to be another job I take on as dh seems to just ignore that it needs washing .

We have a load of animals, but I would never put their bowls in the dishwasher. We have a utility room with a big old Belfast sink, so I wash up all the animal bowls or put them to soak in there as soon as they've finished eating. As much as I love the animals, I think their bowls should be kept separate from human dishes.

copperoliver · 07/11/2020 21:56

I always put ours in the dishwasher I rinse everything first. It washes to a high temperature so cleans everything. X

A dishwasher cleans it does not sterilize. If you saw what they put into dog/cat food you would be shocked. Dog food is not for human consumption for a reason. I agree any most bacteria/virus should be eliminated in the dishwasher but prions will not. I personally would not take the risk. Hot soapy water and wipe over with disinfectant is sufficient to clean the bowl for a dog to use it does not need to go in the dishwasher.
If these prions are super dangerous and the heat and detergent of a dishwasher isn't enough the kill them, then washing by hand would be far more dangerous as you would actually get them on your hands.

Everyone worried about washing your pet's dishes. Then they sleep next to you on the bed. You pet them do you wash your hands after each time? C'mon

Parker231 · 07/11/2020 22:05

Pet bowls are put in the dishwasher each night. Best way of getting them clean as the water is at such a high temperature.

copperoliver · 07/11/2020 22:09

Dogs mouths have antibacterial compounds some maybe cleaner than visitors who have eaten off of our crockery. ( just a thought). X

Sunnydaysstillhere · 07/11/2020 22:12

We have 4 ddogs so lots of bowls. Easier to hand wash.. But can't see (if you eat meat) how a bowl with horse meat residue on is any worse than a cow /pig /lamb plate..

And they don’t wipe their bottoms after pooing....

Guilty of this, have on occasion given casserole dish to dog to clean off the burnt bits before putting it in the dishwasher, he loves it Grin, he also licks the plates as I load it. 🙈Grin

SomeSmotheringDreams · 07/11/2020 22:23

Our pet bowls never go in the dishwasher. We have a separate washing up brush just for pet bowls and they get washed on their own.

AbbeyRoadNW8 · 07/11/2020 22:58

Absolutely right if you are in the habit of licking your hands dry.

DramaAlpaca · 07/11/2020 23:07

I wouldn't dream of putting pet bowls in the dishwasher. Ours get washed in very hot water in the utility room sink. I couldn't bring myself to put them in the dishwasher. Which is probably a bit silly as we often put dishes on the 'dog cycle' Confused

For those saying a dishwasher 'sterilises'. It doesn't get hot enough to do that. It sanitises, but it certainly doesn't sterilise.

VinylDetective · 08/11/2020 00:09

A dishwasher washes a lot hotter than you could bear on your hands so obviously it’s cleaner than handwashing.

Titsywoo · 08/11/2020 00:21

My dishwasher washes things at 70 degrees so I'm not bothered. I have 2 dishwashers anyway and put the dog bowl in the saucepan one not the plates and cutlery one but either way I dont see it as an issue. My dog is pretty clean - she doesn't walk anymore as she is a lazy elderly bulldog so she is either in our house or garden. She can't lick her own arse so no worries there. As other posters say if you put dishes that had raw chicken in there then a dog bowl is no different.

lborgia · 08/11/2020 00:55

I'm interested in the caution about dishwasher not sterilising.

I've seen plenty of mns on here saying they don't have baby bottle sterilisers in the US because they put them into the dishwasher...?

Given the caustic detergent used in washers, and the several minutes at 70 degrees, I honestly cannot see why anyone would choose handwashing. It is so daft. Also uses a ton more water.

DigitalChristmas · 08/11/2020 01:00

@VioletCharlotte

I've always washed my dog's bowl in the dishwasher, I can't see what the issue is? The dishwasher cleans at such a high temperature, surely it's perfectly hygienic.
Not all dishwashers use high temperatures. Some modern machines use long washes at lower temps as a way to conserve energy

My dishwasher goes to 70 degrees (or claims to).

I boiler a kettle and pour a bit of hot water over the bowl before it goes in anyway.

I wash pet blankets on the 90 degree wash in the was king machine.

Haven’t killed anyone yet😊

Anotherducker · 08/11/2020 03:26

BSE from the dog bowl? Some of you worry too much.

BiteyShark · 08/11/2020 05:53

My dishwasher uses hot temperatures because I can't handle the plates for ages when the cycle finishes as they are far far too hot. So the bowls get washed and then dried in heat much hotter than I would be able to do with hand washing.

Dinosauraddict · 08/11/2020 06:13

We have 3 Ddogs - the bowls all go in the dishwasher here!

HartnellAvenue · 08/11/2020 06:30

It has never ever crossed my mind that animal bowls shouldn't go in the dishwasher. Some of you have too much time on your hands - just bung them in

ImAncient · 08/11/2020 06:44

Quick hot rinse in the sink & then the dishwasher.
