Man refuses to get out of shared lift

Obviously we don’t know the whole story but it would appear that a person wanted to share a lift by themself.

Others facts - he may have alluded to her having corona. He record her. Neither wear wearing masks. Enclosed space.

Thoughts?

My personal thoughts are that she was in the right. If she wanted to use the lift by herself than I think people should respect her decision. To go around ranting, recording and speaking to her in a raised voice, especially given her reaction - than he’s out of order.

@switswooo

She might have been in the wrong to initially say she only wanted one person in the lift, but anyone can be wrong and make a mistake, it doesn't mean that she deserved for it to escalate like that. It also doesn't mean that she's responsible for the entire exchange that followed.

So what was he supposed to do whilst she stood there holding the 'hold' button? Beg her to leave?

The impression that I got was she was standing there holding the button because she was challenging him on his racist comments. She didn't repeatedly ask him to leave..so I think at that point it wasn't about sharing the lift, it was about sticking up for herself and challenging the racist comment he had made towards her!
Caroncanta · 03/11/2020 14:42

He chose to abuse her. You choose to condone his behaviour.

Think that pretty much sums it up, yep.

LastTrainEast · 03/11/2020 14:44

"but there is nothing forcing her to accept another passenger" well providing it was HER lift that is true. Do we have reason to think she owned the building?

frasersmummy · 03/11/2020 14:53

She's a loon... The lift takes 2..

She had no right to hold up the lift.. And no right to press the alarm.. What's that going to do. Inconvenience even more people.

Yes.

And him?

Caroncanta · 03/11/2020 14:57

Well what he did do was display threatening, aggressive and racist behaviour. That seem ok to you?

Hardly a loon Hmm.

Oh my god the woman made a mistake by trying to say the lift should be used by one person only....and then stuck up for herself after his racist comment. Lock her up in the looney bin

switswooo · 03/11/2020 15:03

The thing is people are not happy with black people ever standing up for themselves.

I remember the threads about Christian Cooper, who was threatened by a white woman and told she will tell the police an African American man is harassing her. Christian Cooper was so polite to her and yet MNers were still calling him aggressive for filming her.

Black people cant win!

me too, I perceived she was challenging him on being abusive in his language towards her. There's only one abusive offensive person in the clips I've seen. That unpleasant person was him not her.

D00MGL00M · 03/11/2020 15:09

It looks like he was live streaming as he walked into the lift. He was loud an shouty walking along the hallways and as he entered the lift already recording. That's the moment I'd have gotten out of the lift because a loud shouty person recording in a small place is already showing lack of awareness and respect to those around them. She tries to start to explain and you can hear her quietly say "because" but he starts shouting at her straight away. She spoke quietly at first and he didn't let her finish and started speaking into his video again. He asks her to explain herself a few times and when she tries to open her mouth to speak he either starts shouting and swearing over her or the video cuts off.

Video two I can't hear him say you people brought it here though, I can hear him say something like " Of all people it should be running from you" which is bad, but not the quote the article says, and I'm wondering if when he's saying "two people" about the the sign it's misheard as two people.

I hate any kind of confrontation so I'd have left the second anyone recording steps in rather than ask them to stop. If I'm exempt from mask wearing I don't want someone else who dial exempt chattering away in a confined space like that. But then if I was exempt from mask wearing and I got to the lift and someone else there first who is also exempt I would wait for the next one, not continue filming social media content and shout, swear and name call at anyone who feels uncomfortable.

This is nothing to do with his colour. He is the racist. It's about him and his agressive racist attitude. The only difference is he recording himself doing it rather than someone else.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/11/2020 15:18

@DOOMGLOOM I've just gone back and found the longer video and you are right. He was being cock of the walk before he ever got to the lift! Seems like he really is one of those people whose lives aren't real unless they are filmed, shared and liked! Then again that's how he says he is... so maybe it's more normal than I thought!

I still don't get why only the B in BAME is being supported here!

Xenia · 03/11/2020 15:34

She seems calmer than he does and she says less. If the real scenario was he began to film her when he walked into the lift and was trying to make some video thing then I can see why she might choose to keep her finger on the lift button (which is of course not a crime whereas in some places filming without permission is).

C130 · 03/11/2020 15:56

She had no right to hold the lift like that. She does not get to dictate who is in the lift with her.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/11/2020 15:57

@C130

OK! So that's what gives him the right to react as he did.

Seems reasonable to me. Thanks for pointing it out!

On other news... Valance and Whity are being grilled by know nothings about really important things!

@CuriousaboutSamphire

It was always such. It seems that only one group is systematically abused by everyone else. To be fair I think this could be true up to a point, but I also think that prejudice comes from and is directed at all groups.
I saw Hasan Minhaj, having a go at Indian ppl for their racism against Black ppl and decades of prejudice. I think some of his points were accurate and uncomfortable for those of us who feel we are the ones who suffer but are not the aggressors. One thing I did notice though there was no mention of the Indians being kicked out Africa in the early 70's, which meant my parents like thousands of others had to leave all their assets and goods and start again elsewhere.
I think we are all guilty of racism, but I assume the more powerful / large your ethnic group/ colour is the more effect the prejudice becomes.

switswooo · 03/11/2020 16:15

Not sure how that gives an excuse to be racist to black people in America? They didn’t kick Indians out. Also, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis were also kicked out, weird that you don’t mention them.

Africaisnotacountry · 03/11/2020 16:25

@Cheeseandwin5 - this happened in one country: Uganda. Your comment makes it seem as if this happened on a wide scale in 54 other countries, when the reality is non-black people in particular South East Asians enjoy and benefit from anti-blackness across the African continent and are rewarded financially for it (based on the systemic racist structures and views left by white colonial rule and the benefit of still being a minority- they are even referred to as white in some communities and benefit from that privilege conferred to them) whereas the Ugandan expulsion is more of an anomaly than your comment suggests it is a norm.

They are 54 countries in Africa. Name the one you mean instead of being purposefully misleading.

Caroncanta · 03/11/2020 16:46

There's no excuses to be racist to anyone, including being racist towards the woman in the lift.

Cheeseandwin5 · 03/11/2020 17:07

@switswooo

Yes you are correct- I say Indian's but I mean brown skinned ppl. This is my mistake and I apologise. But that sort of proves my point my point. I can be as racist and unthinking as anyone else, whatever mine or their colour.

Cheeseandwin5 · 03/11/2020 17:18

@Africaisnotacountry

Actual people of Indian origin in were all too often the target of persecution, expropriation of their property across Africa especially in South East African countries like, Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Uganda is the most notable as they actually had a policy of outright expulsions. My family and many of their friends left Kenya during this time.
By the way, this is not a shot against Africa or those countries concerned. India is arguable the most prejudiced country in the world. I am just saying there are few countries and no colours that are just victims or aggressors. We are all guilty of it.

switswooo · 03/11/2020 17:22

@Cheeseandwin5 I do agree that we are all guilty of it

VivaMiltonKeynes · 03/11/2020 18:02

I can't believe how many of you seem to think that it was Ok for him to behave like this - the loud mouthing , the filming, the teeth sucking . He is very threatening . His Twitter says it all about him . He is a wanker.

Africaisnotacountry · 03/11/2020 18:06

I would argue that point but 6 countries still does not justify the blanket African statement. I strewn this point as it is quite tiring to constantly have "Africa" as a talking point when they are 54 vastly different countries who are often just grouped together out of sheer laziness perpetuating unwelcome stereotypes. And in those 6 countries you mention, Southh East Asians still live a life mainly of privilege and benefit from the systemic racist structures left in place by the British colonial system. On top of that Uganda welcomed SE Asians back in the 80s and set places in place for restitution. You are still trying to maintain as if this was and is common practice in ALL African nations which is misleading and misrepresentation

Xenia · 03/11/2020 18:47

The only racism on the video was against the lady holding the lift button who was being filmed without her consent and with a very nasty man shouting at her. If someone were filming me without consent and shouting at me like that who was so much bigger than I am I would have walked out of the lift (if he let me go) and let him take it and then get the next lift up.
