Man refuses to get out of shared lift

Georgeoftheinternet · 03/11/2020 00:37

Obviously we don’t know the whole story but it would appear that a person wanted to share a lift by themself.

Others facts - he may have alluded to her having corona. He record her. Neither wear wearing masks. Enclosed space.

Thoughts?

My personal thoughts are that she was in the right. If she wanted to use the lift by herself than I think people should respect her decision. To go around ranting, recording and speaking to her in a raised voice, especially given her reaction - than he’s out of order.

I frequently have to get the lifts in a hospital. It is meant to be four people only per lift right now, and people are meant to stand facing the four corners, ie away from each other. Never seen anyone face as they should or stay on position (except for me, I look like the dunce in the corner Grin ). Have seen many people try to force their way in when there are already four people. There is a monitor on the ground floor, but they need one on every floor if it is to be enforced. You'd wait forever to go alone and there are 24 flights of steep stairs.

Can't click on the link but if a lift says for two, then it seems like someone wanting to go alone should wait.

I think he’s in the wrong. The sign says maximum two people, but there is nothing forcing her to accept another passenger. It’s a pandemic. We’re told not to share cars, why would lifts be safer?

It's not her lift so she doesn't have any say or whether she accepts or refuses another person on the lift. AT ALL!
If it really bothered her she should have let him use the lift and then waited for it again.

I also doubt that her worry was covid. She's not wearing a mask...and I do accept that maybe she might be unable to wear them...but she is also staying in a confined space where he is raising his voice at her....and shouting would be more likely to spread droplets...so if she is unable to wear a mask and is so concerned about covid that she kicks up that much of a fuss about sharing a lift with someone else then she would also be aware of that and would have just left the lift when he was raising his voice!

She was 100% in the wrong!

user1481840227 · 03/11/2020 02:19

OK i've seen the full videos now and it seemed what happened is that she did initially want there to be only one person in the lift...and perhaps if he had just said "well I want to take this one" then she might have said ok and got out but he actually then said something to her like "how are you telling me to get out when it was you people who brought the corona?"
So he was racist towards her....and she seemed to just be standing her ground after he had said that to her because she asked a few times about how he could say something indecent like that to her!

So I was wrong in my earlier post!

BullBailey · 03/11/2020 02:20

@AcornAutumn

My thoughts are

The sign says two people in the lift

If she objects to that, she should get out and wait.

This!!!

I used a lift today at the hospital. It said two people could use it. If someone else wanted to get in, fine. If I wanted it to myself then I could have waited for the next one.

Don’t feel sorry for her But do Very much dislike ‘Asian Karen’. To be fair. Both their behaviour in this video is pathetic.

Malvarrosa · 03/11/2020 02:24

It’s a whole new world of lift etiquette, really. If you’re midway up/down a building and press the button for the lift, you may well get one that’s too full for your tastes and you just say never mind, I’ll wait. Not a lot you can do if someone gets on inappropriately except get off yourself and wait. People who subscribe to this “Karen” bullshit should be culled for the sake of humanity, though, so no sympathy for that dude.

Why should she get the lift to herself? You can expect others not to use lift.

Lifts where I am are explicitly for one person or one household at a time.

If certain companies and certain tower blocks can enforce a one-person-per-lift rule, then everywhere can. Not unreasonable not to want to share a confined and non-ventilated space with a stranger during a pandemic.

Yeah i don’t understand why people are acting as if it’s normal times. So dumb.

She was 100% in the wrong!

She was attacked and racially abused by someone who directly physically endangered her by exposing her to a high-risk transmission situation.

I also doubt that her worry was covid.
Do you actually believe this ignorant claptrap?

GlowingOrb · 03/11/2020 02:54

Getting into an occupied lift is no longer acceptable behavior. You wait for the next one.

If you read my post just after that then you would see that I wasn't aware that she was racially attacked but changed my mind after seeing the full video.

I also wasn't implying that her worry was that he was a black man..if that is what you are implying by questioning what I said about doubting her worry was covid. I actually thought she was just being an asshole...not being racist!

@Georgeoftheinternet
What do you mean by timestamp?

RantyAnty · 03/11/2020 03:10

He was wrong and a batshit bully

HoppingPavlova · 03/11/2020 03:12

Yeah i don’t understand why people are acting as if it’s normal times. So dumb.

Well, no it’s not normal times, which is why the lift occupancy has been restricted to 2 people rather than the usual (probably 10/12). The pandemic has been taken into account and with the physical size of the lift, occupancy has been amended accordingly. A smaller lift may be adjusted to occupancy if 1 or 1 family unit and a larger lift adjusted to 4.

If that particular lift is deemed appropriate for 2 then that is the condition of carriage. If the woman wanted a lift all to herself she needs to wait until this is possible. This may even entail a few go’s if another person wants to enter while you are on your way to your destination floor. That’s life. If you want to set your own rules then build your own building and install your own lift then you can do so.

The woman was ridiculous.

Yellownotblue · 03/11/2020 03:17

@user1481840227 thanks for sharing the clip. It’s exactly what I suspected. He was abusing her.

(Also, I admire that you came back after your initial post. Not many posters do that. I hope I don’t sound patronising - I’m being sincere).

Halliehallie9828 · 03/11/2020 03:21

She’s wrong. If she didn’t want to share then she should get out.

DailyCandy · 03/11/2020 03:24

You can’t just commandeer a lift FFS. If she was worried about Covid she would be wearing a mask. Suspect race plays a part here too.

Bunniesitmustbebunnies · 03/11/2020 03:32

Having seen the update that he accused her of bringing covid over I would say she is still 95%in the wrong. If she was actually worried about covid she wouldn’t have stood in the elevator any longer than was needed.

Just read the article that he’s one of these tedious Insta bores, who are constantly on the look out for any smidge of unreasonable behaviour to video for attention from followers.

Still if a random woman told me I wasn’t allowed in the elevator I would no way leave which is why she is still in the wrong.

Yellownotblue · 03/11/2020 03:42

This story should be about a man racially abusing an Asian woman.

Typical DARVO.

Malvarrosa · 03/11/2020 05:22

Yes, I also hate it when women do and say stuff, especially random women. Pesky, really.

pralineandketchup · 03/11/2020 05:29

I'm not watching the video but at the moment I'd say it's not acceptable to get in a lift which has one person in it.

I don’t understand the tone of your comment. I have never said I hate when women do and say stuff but you obviously do. My comment was about that one random woman who has no authority over the lift and it’s usage. I suppose with this being mumsnet I should have also stated if a random man told me to get out the elevator I wouldn’t leave it either.
Aridane · 03/11/2020 05:46

We have x4 people in our lifts at work (with place markers for where to stand). I would think someone demented if they asked me to leave the lift

Ghosts2020 · 03/11/2020 05:49

Clearly wherever they are from they are highly uneducated, you should not be sharing confined spaces with someone outside of your household ect. Whoever was in the lift first had right to the lift the other should have waited for the following lift.

emilyfrost · 03/11/2020 05:53

She’s the one that didn’t want to share, so she’s the one that should leave the situation.
