I accidentally went into a trendy shop today...

.... and it was so trendy I didn’t even recognise it as trendy. I got confused and assumed I had temporarily time travelled 25 years in the past when the site of this particular Urban Outfitters was in fact a Banardos.

I was brought back to present time by the helpful 17 yr old who could clearly see I was lost in time and asked me if he could help (escort me to the nearest M&S where I clearly belong).

I hope the photos work.

Thank you so much for this thread. I've had the shittiest day and you've managed to make me genuinely lol.

HaggieMaggie · 16/10/2020 18:33

Edgy uni student stuff this, sells like hot cakes in our city.

RoSEbuds6 · 16/10/2020 18:34

My DD loves shopping in charity shops which I am pleased about as it's much cheaper than the shops. Most of it looks like it's come from an East German warehouse, but she mixes it up with little 1950's handbags. It's lovely really - much more creative than the places I used to shop - Chelsea Girl and Dolcis!

Unsuremover · 16/10/2020 18:35

I cannot wait till this lots has been in fashion long enough for a middle aged overweight government employee to wear. Love me a benaton jumper. And so sensible.

Blondiney · 16/10/2020 18:35

@Margotshypotheticaldog

Harry Styles looks like my mum in that photo. Hair and all.
I scrolled back for another look 😂 😂 😂
RoSEbuds6 · 16/10/2020 18:38

Actually when I go to UO i look at their plants and make helpful suggestions about how often they should water them - they love me in there. Grin

I saw a mannequin today wearing EXACTLY the same clothes that I wore in 1997. Red tartan trousers a ribbed white crop top and a black biker jacket. I would love to be able to pull it off still!

I noticed Matalan was looking like an episode of friends. Floaty floral tea dresses with leather jackets and chunky shoes. I love it!

You're pulling our leg!!

Ha ha - well done!

Surely that cannot be new clothing?!

FairFriday · 16/10/2020 18:48

Oxfam?

BabbleBee · 16/10/2020 18:49

I went into Urban Outfitters with my 16yo DD a few weeks ago, I said —too loudly— holy shit I’ve walked into 1995!

She wasn’t impressed.

wagonwheeljam · 16/10/2020 18:50

I had a shell suit aged about 9/10 ? I thought I looked amazing. It was purple. The colour drained me yet I thought it was beautiful and that I was extremely fashionable
In reality I looked like a highly flammable giant iris
I also had hi top trainers with giant tongues a matching scrunchie and a ‘day glo’ jacket that had plastic badges stuck all over it and I literally thought life would never get any better 🤣

troppibambini · 16/10/2020 18:54

My 15 year old headed off into Manchester today dressed exactly as I did in the 90's and headed for afflecks place just as I used to, to go shopping.....
it was like stepping back in time!

Coquohvan · 16/10/2020 18:55

Harry Styles got no style.

Mrsemcgregor · 16/10/2020 18:56

@FlyingSquid & @FAQs
We need to form a support group.

"My 16 year old is also doing the shoelace on her baggy jeans! I couldn’t work out why there was a shoelace in the washing machine with no shoe attached? Although why there would be a shoe in there, but anyway, she grabbed it and said it was her belt !"
Keep an eye on your washer. Ours was making a funny noise last week, thanks to a mangled shoelace-belt trapped in the filter.

When your children are smaller & happily wearing the nice clothes you've chosen for them, you never think they will do this. When you spot the secondary school kids with their skirts up round their waists, not wearing coats in the depths of winter, you will purse your lips, blame their parents for poor discipline, & say, "Not my child!"

Let me tell you, your turn will come!

The key is to remain calm, be neutral about the old man jumpers, & definitely do not say, "Are you going out in that?"

Beamur · 16/10/2020 18:59

My DSS has been dressing like a homeless person from the late 1980's for a while now! He's very trendy.
All the clothes I've bought for my DD lately are exactly what I would have worn at her age. Great fun. A refreshing change.

Carouselfish · 16/10/2020 19:00

hehe, reminds me of the time I went into a dark, dingy, seemingly unnamed shop off the Tottenham Court Road run by an eccentric old lady. After she guessed my size and started bringing me things to try on, I asked the price (faux pas, it turned out), was utterly shocked by the expense and replied as only 18 year old me would, that I had thought it was a charity shop! It. Was. Not.

Mrsemcgregor · 16/10/2020 19:00

@TheOrchidKiller my eldest DS started secondary this year and refuses to wear a coat for the first time in his life (he feels the cold usually). We have reached the stage that blending in and being “cool” is more important than comfort and wellbeing. I’ve said nothing so far, but I have raised an eyebrow at him on several occasions Grin

@AestheticWitch

I blame Gucci. And Harry Styles.
Surely Harry Styles is cosplaying one of the Golden Girls in that photo?

I wasn't cool enough for those clothes first time around (and I'm sure my Dad had one of those jumpers). I'm far too cool for them now.

UnholyStramash · 16/10/2020 19:02

I skipped shell suits first time round. Think I’ll skip that trend again. So long since I’ve been in a clothes shop anyway I might give that up totally.

RuffleCrow · 16/10/2020 19:05

Lol those shell suits. We should have just hung on to all our old tat and opened a trendy shop in 2020. Or maybe one of us did Confused

Beamur · 16/10/2020 19:12

I'm emptying my PIL house soon. Reckon I am sitting on a gold mine... cupboards full of vintage Berhaus.

BlueSpottyBlouse · 16/10/2020 19:12

Last year my parents and I went on a cruise. And there was an older couple wearing matching shell suits.

My (77-year old) dad nudged me and stage whispered; 'Look!! It's Geriatric Ken and Barbie'!!
