I accidentally went into a trendy shop today...

.... and it was so trendy I didn’t even recognise it as trendy. I got confused and assumed I had temporarily time travelled 25 years in the past when the site of this particular Urban Outfitters was in fact a Banardos.

I was brought back to present time by the helpful 17 yr old who could clearly see I was lost in time and asked me if he could help (escort me to the nearest M&S where I clearly belong).

I hope the photos work.

There must be vast warehouses full of this stuff with labels on saying "re introduce in 1997/2020 /2025"

DrCoconut · 17/10/2020 21:40

I recently donated my early 90's shell suit to the museum. It's counted as historical costume officially 😱

waitforitwaitforit · 17/10/2020 21:48

I wandered into Topshop the other day (yes, I know no good can come of what a thing) and they were selling crushed velvet flares. 😂

Merryweather80 · 17/10/2020 21:48

Um, so, when did burgundy bell-bottom cords and a v neck fleck jumper go out of fashion? Obviously worn with DM’s.

(Wheels self back off to bed to dream of the floppy velvet hat of my lost youth)

My shell suit of the early 90’s was pink and white. I'd wanted it for ages. I cried with joy on my birthday when I opened my presents and there it was. 😂

Have loved reading this thread as another 42 year old. In my area growing up there was “town” secondary school and “secondary school that all the local village schools sent their kids to” and there was much rivalry between the two schools.
Town school kids wore shell suits and puffer jackets and we called them (disparagingly) “Bubblies”. We, on the other hand, wore DMs, band t shirts, fugly jumpers etc and therefore considered ourselves much cooler.
I remember my friend coming back from a trip to family in Newcastle once in a turquoise shell suit and we were like “Kirsty! What the actual fuck are you doing in a Bubbly outfit” and she was like “I know but my gran bought it for me and so I had to wear it once”. Smile
God I miss the 90s.

Mrsemcgregor · 17/10/2020 21:54

I got my shell suit for Xmas, it was top of my list! I was absolutely delighted until I realised my mum had bought the whole family a matching set. Omg the cringe is still deep within me.

@Merryweather80 ever since the 90s came back in I've been on the look out for some flared cords. I wanted some so bad back then but mum still bought my clothes and didnt like them 😂

Ozgirl75 · 17/10/2020 21:59

SD1978 · 17/10/2020 22:17

Bloody hell- are those seriously shell suits? I swear I had a similar pink one- much to my shame!!!

FelicisNox · 17/10/2020 22:21

Christ I miss the 80's....... I wish I could accidentally find that shop, I would be all over shell suits with zero fucks given.

I will sleep tonight dreaming of George Michael 💕

Antonov · 17/10/2020 22:23

The second picture looks like someone has swiped all the racing silks from the jockeys’ changing rooms at Ascot.

Clemsont · 17/10/2020 22:35

@Ozgirl75 @FatGirlShrinking urban outfitters same shop as ops post, has lots check out the website I bought some red cord flares recently!

BestIsWest · 17/10/2020 23:13

I loved a waistcoat and a grandad shirt in the 1980s. Can someone bring them back please.

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 17/10/2020 23:18

Pie crust collars have been spotted. Surely grandad collars have to follow?

PoulePouletteEternellement · 18/10/2020 01:34

There are few lovelier things in the world than a pie crust collar - the bigger, the better.

I once pursued a career where it would have been legitimate to wear one, but the Princess of Wales had kind of ruined the trope for everyone else. (Though she looked perfectly darling in hers.)

Leontine · 18/10/2020 11:47

@thenewaveragebear1983 Urban Outfitters has a genuine vintage section.

TheOrchidKiller · 18/10/2020 13:08

"Can someone being a 21 year old into the thread to explain !"

The 19 year old in this house cannot explain it. She just likes it, OK? Grin There's nothing ironic about it. She started shopping in charity shops for fancy dress parties & school play costumes. She bought a couple of t-shirts because they were cheap, & it's spiralled from there.

People like it because they like it, same as people like any sort of clothing, old or new. And if people are prepared to buy it, there will be canny people willing to sell it.

A lot of the vintage shops cut the original labels out- unless they're designer labels- & replace them with their own labels. It makes me smile because I can spot M&S & Next clothes a mile off, but if you tried to make DD buy something new from either of those shops I think her head would spin with horror.

bringbacksideburns · 18/10/2020 13:24

One outfit from the Eighties I always remember.

I was very slim at the time. I went to Liverpool to a Uni open day and got lost Confused

I had to keep stopping people and getting my big map out. ( It was 1985)

They must have seen me coming though as i had on a red second hand polo neck from Afflecks Palace, a long tight electric blue straight skirt made of this fluffy material ( not mohair)
and a massively too big bright blue wool long coat that fastened to the side like a man's suit. I also used to sometimes pair the red polo neck with a mini kilt and Dr martens.
Oh and the Piece de resistance! A red beret.

Ah the eighties! Bound to come back sooner or later.

bringbacksideburns · 18/10/2020 13:26

And now ive just realised you are actually talking about the 90s!!

thanksamillion · 18/10/2020 23:45

15yo DD went out this afternoon in Kappa tracksuit bottoms with the poppers down them. She buys stuff in charity shops and re-sells on Depop for a vast mark up. My proudest moment (in her eyes) was when I handed over a genuine late 90's jumper that was lurking in my wardrobe. She is very anti fast fashion and she works hard to photograph and sell stuff do I can't complain. I'm just baffled by what people will pay!

ViaFerrata · 19/10/2020 00:28

I love 90s fashion! I never really found a style so I'd happily go back to it. Sadly my age dictates this would not be 'cool'.

fantasmasgoria1 · 19/10/2020 00:30

Whenever I go past urban outfitters I always think the clothing looks used. I never see people wearing anything from there either.
