What's the best European city break you've been on?

I love a weekend away exploring, obviously not at the moment. Our last trip was to Paris in January this year. We've also been to Vienna, Copenhagen & Barcelona.

Where are some great cities you've visited in Europe and why? How long did you go for? Did you travel as a couple or a family?

Rome. Loved it. Also Venice. Go without children, you’ll enjoy it much more.

midsomermurderess · 13/10/2020 11:23

Lisbon. Such a lovely and fun city.

SabrinaThwaite · 13/10/2020 11:24

Vienna was my favourite (but see you’ve already done that), closely followed by Hamburg and Berlin.

Also loved: Lisbon, Bilbao, Budapest.

Travelled with preteens and / or teens.

DartmoorChef · 13/10/2020 11:24

Rome in may or June. Prague in December for the markets.

PuppyMonkey · 13/10/2020 11:24

Rome, then Florence too.

Marmite27 · 13/10/2020 11:24

Florence. My brother lived there and I loved it.

SabrinaThwaite · 13/10/2020 11:26

You could combine Florence, Pisa and Lucca (I prefer Lucca of the three).

Ylvamoon · 13/10/2020 11:27

I've been to Rome twice!
First time as single "through" traveller and only spent 2 nights there... but always wanted to go back to see a bit more - did the big national museums.

2nd time as family 4 nights (DC were 8 &14) and loved it. Had more time and money to see all the sights properly. Mainly Vatican Coloseum and other Roman ruins. (thanks to DC!)
But could probably justify a 3rd an 4th visit. There are all the Renaissance Palazzos, some amazing Churches and even more Art to see!

Istanbul is on my to do list as well.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 13/10/2020 11:28

I enjoyed Rome, and Berlin was amazing!

LesLavandes · 13/10/2020 11:29

Bologna

CandyLeBonBon · 13/10/2020 11:30

Copenhagen

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 13/10/2020 11:32

Oslo is amazing! I had a great long weekend there with DP. Yes, certain things can be eye wateringly expensive (beers for €10) but it has some excellent museums which are reasonably priced, especially if you get the tourist pass. It's really easy to get around by bus and it's quite a compact city so most sights are in walkable distance anyway
We pushed the boat out (scuse the pun!) and did an evening boat trip round the fjord which was just magical

Spidey66 · 13/10/2020 11:35

Amsterdam or Berlin

AlannaOfTrebond · 13/10/2020 11:42

Lisbon was amazing.

You can also do a two centre city break in Norway taking in Oslo and Bergen which were both great.

SpaceRaiders · 13/10/2020 11:43

Another vote for Copenhagen.

Perro · 13/10/2020 11:45

Loved Lisbon and Berlin the most for family city breaks (4 nights/3 days each).
Edinburgh as a couple.

diplodocusinermine · 13/10/2020 11:45

Amsterdam, Stockholm, Lisbon, Barcelona. All in winter, so quieter, and tbh wouldn't do hotter places in summer anyway. All great cities for walking.

As per pp, Lucca is beautiful and less frenetic than Florence.

AnnaMagnani · 13/10/2020 11:47

Budapest if you love cake and music.

However the overtones of the political situation - giant anti-George Soros posters, Tour guide at the synagogue telling us how scared they were - became inescapable the longer we stayed. We started to spot more and more things in the city that looked OK but actually were government propaganda.

Dozer · 13/10/2020 11:47

Oh love a city break!

Enjoyed Rome, Venice, Paris pre-DC. And Rekyavik although that was v pricy indeed, and the scenery in the surrounding places quite ‘marmite‘, DH is into geography and liked the scenery a lot, but I found the landscape depressing!

Enjoyed Budapest for a 5 day summer trip with smaller DC - so many swimming pools, brilliant if you / your DC enjoy that!

Dozer · 13/10/2020 11:48

Copenhagen and Stockholm fun with DC too, great bakeries and public transport.

fairydustandpixies · 13/10/2020 11:48

Rome and Reykjavik.

ReviewingTheSituation · 13/10/2020 11:50

Berlin, Budapest and Lisbon were 3 of my favourites.

Enrico · 13/10/2020 11:52

Seville. Tonnes to do in terms of museums etc, ofc there's the alcazar and cathedral, both gorgeous, and the area around them is incredible. Little picturesque streets with people eating tapas and drinking sherry and playing guitar and dancing impromptu, lovely hotels with rooftop bars and swimming pools (there are a lot of them), easy to get around, very interesting and a nice friendly buzz.
