What's the best European city break you've been on?

I love a weekend away exploring, obviously not at the moment. Our last trip was to Paris in January this year. We've also been to Vienna, Copenhagen & Barcelona.

Where are some great cities you've visited in Europe and why? How long did you go for? Did you travel as a couple or a family?

Another one saying Rome. One of my favourite holidays ever. We went in October, and we were lucky to get fabulous weather without quite so many crowds.

Just such a beautiful place to wander around, so much history and lots of stunning little restaurants and cafes.

Oh, and now-DH proposed there Grin

Ignacious · 13/10/2020 13:14

Florence for me - my absolute favourite place.

happystory · 13/10/2020 13:15

Bologna and Valencia, great for wandering, and food and drink to die for...

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 13/10/2020 13:18

Malaga is fabulous - so under-rated.

cathyandclare · 13/10/2020 13:19

Budapest, Krakow and Berlin - all fantastic and not horribly expensive

DarkMintChocolate · 13/10/2020 13:24

My favourites are

Venice
Rome
Florence
Amsterdam
Berlin
Prague
Krakow
Istanbul
Paris

DH loved Budapest. I thought it was ok, but not in the same league as above. We both didn’t like Vienna - probably because we like the Tyrol and Salzkammergut far more! We loved Salzburg, although I am not sure whether there is enough to do for a long weekend.

timtam23 · 13/10/2020 13:33

I loved Seville and Helsinki, pre-children.
With children - Munich was good, enough to amuse the DCs while I pottered about looking at the city (DCs 6 & 8 at the time)

Notstayingup · 13/10/2020 13:33

Budapest in the winter - gorgeous city, great food, cheap and thermal spas
Munich in the summer - the English garden is fantastic, great shopping and just really pretty and chilled

Rome and Prague! Both beautiful cities with a wealth of history to explore. If going to Prague I recommend paying for one of the hop on/off bus tours. There’s loads of museums including the museum of chocolate.

We walked everywhere in Rome, there seemed to be something to look at around every corner. If going to the Vatican it’s worth paying for a guided tour and remember to cover your shoulders (bear in mind the guards will not let you in with bare shoulders and that includes men)

Amsterdam by a mile, most recently stayed at a fab hotel called Morgan & Mees. Hated Lisbon, streets were filthy and drug dealers hassling is all the time.

Noitjustwontdo · 13/10/2020 14:00

Prague is lovely. Went without DC, we managed to see everything in four days because it’s only small and we mostly walked everywhere too.

DelphineWalsh · 13/10/2020 14:01

Amsterdam or Berlin. And not strictly Europe but Marrakesh. Its about the same distance as other parts of Europe and a fantastic city weekend break.

MaudesMum · 13/10/2020 14:07

Nantes is worth a look. In the summer months there are brilliant art trails, and there's lots of art left over from those trails during the rest of the year. Also, museums - including a really moving slavery one. And, of course, its the home of a enormous mechanical elephant, and other animals created by the same people....

Deadringer · 13/10/2020 14:08

I love Paris and have been several times. Also enjoyed Amsterdam, Venice, Cologne, Vienna, Lisbon, etc, but definitely my favourite was Rome, i went for a wedding and would love to go back. I love a good city break, god how i miss travel. Sad

implantsandaDyson · 13/10/2020 14:09

I think Krakow would be my absolute favourite. I've been 4 times with different groups of people. I usually go at this time of year.

raspberrymuffin · 13/10/2020 14:09

Berlin. Great food, great museums. We went in early spring so it wasn't heaving with tourists but had lots of clear sunny skies, except for the day we woke up to a light dusting of snow everywhere. I'd go back tomorrow if I could.

EhUp · 13/10/2020 14:11

I've done lots over the years

For a family trip I would recommend Amsterdam, Bruges or Lisbon

Bologna is lovely for a short break (2 nights max) but probably not enough to see/do for any longer

Toilenstripes · 13/10/2020 14:12

Amsterdam with a couple of days in The Hague, which has a gorgeous beach perfect on hot days.

MadisonAvenue · 13/10/2020 14:12

Prague. We walked for miles and saw so much of the city. It’s beautiful and has such an interesting history.

AgentProvocateur · 13/10/2020 14:13

I love a city break!

Malaga
Vallencia
Palma in Mallorca (but it’s quite small)
Madrid
Seville and Granada
Barcelona
Rome
Trieste
Venice
Llubijana
Rome
Florence
Bologna
Istanbul

Were all great.

Paris was disappointing and Oslo was lovely but too dear to be really enjoyable.

Terralee · 13/10/2020 14:15

Krakow was amazing

Thethingswedoforlove · 13/10/2020 14:16

Amsterdam is my best ever

Old stuff.
Colossal scale.
