What's the best European city break you've been on?

I love a weekend away exploring, obviously not at the moment. Our last trip was to Paris in January this year. We've also been to Vienna, Copenhagen & Barcelona.

Where are some great cities you've visited in Europe and why? How long did you go for? Did you travel as a couple or a family?

Thank you!

I am really enjoying reading all of these! I can't wait to get city breaking again! Lisbon has been suggested a few times, its now firmly on my list.

I have been to Budapest (not sure how I forgot), and it was -3 degrees! Id love to go back in warmer weather to use more of the pools.

Prague. I’ve been with friends and as a family. Both times totally fab. 3 nights both times.

showmethegin · 13/10/2020 12:01

Lisbon is just incredible

CokeEnStock · 13/10/2020 12:04

Lisbon, Budapest, Munich, Oslo, Barcelona, Seville, Granada, Bordeaux, Nice....oh I could go on. So miss travelling!

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/10/2020 12:05

Depends what you like obvs. Agree Budapest is fab. Also Lyon. Madrid rocks, it’s my fave. You defo can’t beat Edinburgh either, and Glasgow, (could combine them in one break, they are about an hour apart) and Belfast. Amsterdam too - and so quick to get to. All with girlfriends or a boyfriend, no kids. So much to see and do in all these places. I usually go for about 4 days - long enough to do most things - I find a shorter time means you pack too much in and need another break when you get home!

Avignon via direct Eurostar

Rome via Eurostar and overnight sleeper (private cabin for Dh and I)

Washington DC (using family staff travel connection )

All without dc as they were with grandad for a few days

... an other one for Munich!

BarbaraofSeville · 13/10/2020 12:10

I went to Lisbon for a work conference and had about half a day available for a look around and would definitely go back.

My vote would be for some or all of Seville, Granada, Malaga and Cordoba. Possibly throw in Ronda too, plus hiking in the mountains and the Caminito del Rey (raised gorge walk in the mountains north of Malaga).

If you haven't got a fortnight to do all that lot justice, I would go to Seville and have a day trip to Cordoba by train and then combine Malaga or Granada or have a couple of days in either, but seeing as most of the time it is easiest/cheapest to fly to Malaga, you might as well make a longer trip of it.

All these cities have spectacular historical sites, museums, great architecture, food, gardens, everything you could want.

Rome, Bruges, Prague - best ever was Kraków

hollyandkit · 13/10/2020 12:14

Favourites are Copenhagen and Prague - prefer to go in the winter as can't be doing with sightseeing in hot weather. Also loved Krakow. Only ever been as a couple so not sure which is best for kids.

Glitterbubbles · 13/10/2020 12:15

Berlin or Copenhagen

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 13/10/2020 12:20

For me it would be Amsterdam (girls) or Prague (hubby) - did 3 nights in each; lots to see/do. I would say Amsterdam was better for food/shopping/mooching, Prague better for drinks/bars etc. - but that may have been down to the company!

Naples, be sure to include a trip along the Amalfi Coast while there Smile

Rome, hands down. Been many times as we have family near there. We go in August so it is super hot but the crowds are a little quieter.
Budapest was wonderful but it was over a decade a go now, think it's probably a lot more touristy now. We love Berlin, went on honeymoon and stayed in the Adlon Kemplinski (Michael Jackson hung his child out of the window there) and it such a fantastic vibrant city.
We did Warsaw as a night stop off on the way to Krakow last February and oh my god we loved it. We were meant o go back this year for a proper visit but obviously that hasn't happened.

Lurchermom · 13/10/2020 12:42

Oh and I forgot - me and DH stopped in Zaragoza a few years ago on a drive down to Javea in Spain and it was the biggest surprise. The food and buzz in the evening was incredible. That's a nother one we want to return to.

starrynight19 · 13/10/2020 12:45

I think it would be between Rome and Prague for me.
Both beautiful places.

Therealjudgejudy · 13/10/2020 12:49

DuesToTheDirt · 13/10/2020 12:52

Not sure, but Dresden was the biggest surprise, beautiful and so much to see. We went with our kids, who were about 8 I think.
