What's the best European city break you've been on?

I love a weekend away exploring, obviously not at the moment. Our last trip was to Paris in January this year. We've also been to Vienna, Copenhagen & Barcelona.

Where are some great cities you've visited in Europe and why? How long did you go for? Did you travel as a couple or a family?

I had Berlin, Copenhagen and Vienna booked for this summer and with the vouchers have booked Berlin, Copenhagen and Bergen for next summer.

Favourites have been:
Madrid (love it and go often- much prefer it to Barcelona)
Toledo (you could combine as Toledo us half an hour on the train)
Salamanca- the most beautiful city in the world
Lisbon
Brussels- I know you're all going wtf, but hear me out. I lived in Brussels for 6mths in the 80s and fuck me it was baaaad. DD and I went last summer, cheap flights offer on 4 star hotel 100 yards from Grande Place. Loved every single second. It's youthful and vibrant and pretty and we spent 8 hours at the EU which was bloody lovely. (I don't think Brexiters would like it but I found it quite emotional)
Paris is lovely. Sedate. Classy.

I live in Italy so Italian cities for me are a bit coals to Newcastle but I loved Verona, hated Venice, found Bologna depressing and gloomy, (and they rip off even Italians with their faux tortellini) Rome is of course lovely and so is Florence.

My city wishlist involves much of Spain, and also Porto.

Amsterdam. So varied. Tulip fields, cheese, windmills, canal boats, art gallery, Anne Frank house, breweries, red light district and wacky backy. Something for everyone!

Delatron · 13/10/2020 19:00

Berlin and Lisbon have been my favourites.

CottonSock · 13/10/2020 19:01

Loved Berlin and Lisbon too, esp Lisbon.

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 13/10/2020 19:03

I know I should go back to give it a chance but I missed any variety of Amsterdam.
It was all one theme once I'd spent the evening hanging out at the station! 😂

I'd wanted to go to the Rijksmuseum but it was shut for rebuilding works. So my memories are of disappointment, smackheads and the dismal smell of weed in the cafes.

The canalside houses were lovely, with some eye-catching interiors on display after dusk.

ForthPlace · 13/10/2020 19:06

Utrecht - character, museum, shopping, bikes and canals.

Seems to be a Dutch thing, that you have your curtains open after dark so passers by can admire your house?

I was a bit meh about the Rijksmuseum - there seemed to be an awful lot of brown paintings in there. Much preferred the Stedelijk.

Venice, without children, for our 10th wedding anniversary last year in May. The Biennale was on and though I'd assumed it wasn't for the likes of us we bought tickets and LOVED it, went to loads of exhibitions as well as wondering the streets and eating some lovely food.

pallisers · 13/10/2020 21:24

Edinburgh (love that city) and Amsterdam were two of my favourites. But like another poster I've never met a spanish city I didn't like. Madrid, Toledo, Palma, Cordoba, Granada just steeped in history.

OptimisticPrime · 13/10/2020 22:43

Lisbon! We went initially with children and Returned with friends. Excellent both times. We plan to go again just the two of us.

Ooh, once had a v boozy girls’ weekend in Berlin, the club/pub ‘measures’ were huge! Had assumed germany would be v ‘measured’ like in the UK, but - at least when we went and the places we went to - that wasn’t the case. Good times!

notacooldad · 14/10/2020 13:07

I love Berlin. It has some very cool neighbourhoods. I love the Turkish Market and like going out to the lakes.

Delatron · 14/10/2020 13:18

I went to an honesty bar in Berlin! Imagine! We overpaid obviously but what a lovely concept.

Best hen do ever there. The nightlife is great, some very cool bars. Germans so friendly. Really good shopping too, quirky/arty.

sproutsandparsnips · 14/10/2020 13:25

Munich was lovely - lots to do and went when Christmas markets there.

dingdang · 14/10/2020 13:40

Has anyone mentioned San Sebastián and Bilbao? Amazing food and scenery

CloudPop · 14/10/2020 13:43

Berlin. Amazing. So much fascinating history, great food, a real buzz

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 14/10/2020 13:47

Cologne/Dusseldorf - great for food and drink. Nice atmosphere.

Munich/Garmisch-Partenkirchen - best Christmas market experience, picturesque, idyllic.

Both with family, DH, DS and my parents.

Janegrey333 · 14/10/2020 13:52

Stockholm. Beyond beautiful.
