Sometimes when you need a good cry, you can always guarantee these films would make you cry.

What are yours?

Marley and me
War horse
(In fact most sad animal films)

And I’ve literally just watched Deep Impact and I cried again!

Remains of the Day

Goodnight Mr Tom

And the scene in Love Actually when Emma Thompson opens the CD present, expecting the gold heart necklace. Emma Thompson plays that so well I actually feel it 🙈

The colour purple, all the way through really.
Schindlers list, two scenes make me sob, the very first scene where a family are praying and passing bread around with jewels to swallow, there is a boy trembling and the scene that follows the girl in the read coat, then when you see the red coat again and realise they found her.
Precious, there's just no happy ending for her.

kemosabeimalone · 06/09/2020 11:46

The end scenes in Amelie.

Life is Beautiful

My Left Foot

The last scene in Withnail and I

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/09/2020 12:01

Pretty much anything. As soon as the music starts going all 'dah dah dah dah...' that's it. I will never watch Incredible Journey again because of the rivers of snot.

IRL I am quite unemotional, but that's only because it doesn't come with backing music.

I agree - background music in films can be very powerful.

Needhelp101 · 06/09/2020 14:57

Thank you all SO much for making me bawl my eyes out on a Sunday afternoon Grin
Yes to the last scene in Withnail.
Yes to the last 20 minutes of Bohemian Rhapsody.
Yes to the Green Mile.
Even to the scene in the first Sex and the City film where Carrie runs through the snow to spend New Year's Eve with a distraught Miranda.

Willow2017 · 06/09/2020 16:53

When Kili dies in 'The Hobbit' and Thranduil says "Because it was real."
and again when Thorin dies. 😭😭😭

NancyPickford · 06/09/2020 20:22

Another poster mentioned older films from the 40s and 50s. Mumsnetters - please try and find 'Madame X' and 'Imitation of Life'.

LaPoesieEstDansLaRue · 06/09/2020 21:04

I'm not really a crier, although some films make me feel quite emotional. But the only film I've ever actually cried it - and I cry every time- is the end of Lost In Translation.

Permanent Record (80s film with Keanu Reeves). High school kid commits suicide and his friends struggle to cope with the aftermath. They dedicate a song to him at their school concert (against the wishes of the teachers) at the end - always gets me in the feels

  • Pans Labyrinth. Fantastic film and I know what’s coming but it gets me every time
  • Bridge to Terrabitha. No spoilers here but I was not expecting that! Such a change in pace it comes out of no where
  • The English Patient when Ralph Fiennes describes going back to the cave. His voice, the music, it’s so tragic.
  • Toy Story 3 (I think) when Andy gives his toys to the little girl.
Loads more I can’t think of but I’m getting worse as I get older
