I'm a fucking HOUSEWIFE?

ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup · 02/09/2020 20:55

Just had the car insurance renewal on DH's car. I am a named driver, and the details listed state that I am a 'housewife'. How the fuck is this even a category?

@iamtheoneandonlyyy

You flog perfume on Facebook don't you Grin
😬😬😬
JoJoSM2 · 02/09/2020 21:27

Have a word with your husband? I take it it wasn’t you who put ‘housewife’ on the form so much have been him.

Whatthebloodyell · 02/09/2020 21:28

I still can’t actually work out if you have a job or not?

I understand the dislike of the word housewife, but I guess it is ok if househusband is an option too. Personally I prefer ‘stay at home mum’.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/09/2020 21:28

He should have put self employed riding instructor or whatever your business is. Self employed on its own isn't enough for the insurance company.

However I have to put civil servant because my actual job doesn't exist in insurance land but I am a civil servant so can say that truthfully.

BrrrrrrWentTheAlarmClock · 02/09/2020 21:28

X post gunpowder! How strange! I guess it depends on the occupation!

The job title question is always a bit of a joke though. It can really alter your insurance depending what words you use.

I also spent ages once in a bank when they tried to make me find my occupation in a list... nothing was even vaguely my job (they did have the, in my opinion, rather niche option of diamond cutter though?!).

I ended up being an 'office worker' which although accurate in wording, seemed rather vague. I assume they assumed stuff about me based on this...

Ginger1982 · 02/09/2020 21:29

So what do you do and why didn't you or your husband put down what you actually do? This is such a weird thread.

Hiphopopotamus · 02/09/2020 21:30

Are you a CEO #bossbabe of your own ‘company’ OP? Grin

It’s not a great title but if you are a married woman with no employment, it’s either that or ‘unemployed’ as an occupation. Do you actually have a job? You’re being really cagey about it. If you do, then your job title should be your listed occupation.

JoanJosephJim · 02/09/2020 21:30

I am a long term SAHM, I don't particularly like the term housewife however I don't know what other way to be described. Home-maker? I wish there was a modern term for it but housewife it is.

It doesn't define me, it is merely my role in the family. If you are self employed then you must fit into a job description category.

MitziK · 02/09/2020 21:30

@ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup

Not a 'stay at home mother', I am self employed and yes I do make my own money - what an odd question.
Self employed puts the price up as well.

Grit your teeth and pay the lower premium.

Whatthebloodyell · 02/09/2020 21:30

Ok so you do have an occupation then? So just change it? Some people identify as a housewife so it makes sense that it is still an option, but if that’s not you, change it. No need for the rage.

ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup · 02/09/2020 21:30

But ... wouldnt saying self employed be basically lying, because you arent going to be travelling for work etc. A SAHM has different uses for a car compared to someone who is working.

As a SAHM, I get the idea that the word 'housewife' has old fashioned connotations, but there is also no other term for what we do. We are housewives, but I know the job I do is a hard one. Its not the 1950s. Housewives who raise kids are valued and people know we have brain cells. I think your issue with the word is more in your own mind and view of yourself.

Okay, work your brain cells. I am self employed. I am not lying, why would I? I am a named driver because I rarely use the car - I cycle if I need to go anywhere. My children are old enough to drive. I am not a house wife. I am not a stay at home mother.

OP posts:
vanillandhoney · 02/09/2020 21:30

Because it's not the 1950s

I don't really see why that's relevant - running a home and raising a family is nothing be ashamed of.

Goostacean · 02/09/2020 21:31

One could be a housespouse without having children, so I don’t think SAHP is a good alternative...

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 02/09/2020 21:31

i am surprised it says housewife and not home maker

anon5000 · 02/09/2020 21:32

It's outdated and I'm not surprised you are pissed off.

Eminybob · 02/09/2020 21:32

Op, every car insurance application I have ever completed has asked for the named drivers occupation. If you have employment, self or otherwise, you or whoever completed the application should have declared what it is.
If you are not a “housewife” (or whatever term you’d prefer) then your application is fraudulent and needs to be amended.

SoManyActivities · 02/09/2020 21:32

Do you make 'Sweetie Bouquets' to sell on Facebook?

OhTheRoses · 02/09/2020 21:33

If you enjoy it, isn't it better to be a fucking housewife than just a housewife. I rather liked being a housewife and had more energy when I was younger and before I went back to work ..............

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 02/09/2020 21:33

do you provide massages?

Laaalaaaa · 02/09/2020 21:34

FFS what is your self employed line of work? You’re pissing people off because you’re clearly avoiding telling us what you apparently do to earn a living. Next guess is ‘it’s far too outing.’

vanillandhoney · 02/09/2020 21:34

@Whatthebloodyell

I still can’t actually work out if you have a job or not?

I understand the dislike of the word housewife, but I guess it is ok if househusband is an option too. Personally I prefer ‘stay at home mum’.

But not all housewives/homemakers/house husbands are parents.
mcdog · 02/09/2020 21:34

OP, what is your job????? Ffs...stop being evasive Confused

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/09/2020 21:34

Ok so surely the problem is they have incorrectly listed your job title. It could have said astronaut or golf caddy. Same diff.

Ring them and get it changed. Ask them who selected that option.

daisypond · 02/09/2020 21:35

Self employed is not a job title. What’s the nearest thing to your job in the list? Are you full time or part time? Who put you down as a housewife? It makes your insurance invalid if it is not accurate.

purpleme12 · 02/09/2020 21:35

If it's down as a housewife and this is wrong just call them and change it.
You will need to give them your actual job title - which you seem reluctant to do here.
Then all sorted, no need to get in a huff and so defensive on here
