I'm a fucking HOUSEWIFE?

Just had the car insurance renewal on DH's car. I am a named driver, and the details listed state that I am a 'housewife'. How the fuck is this even a category?

OP posts:
Brockaslass · 05/09/2020 04:50

This category is usually set by whoever has applied. Most probably your husband. It's usually the nearest category associated with your job. Most list different types of jobs and have a listing for housewife or unemployed. Sound like one of you have selected this option. There's no shame in it. My husbands a househusband. He could select unemployed both are correct but the latter increased his premiums. I'd look back at the application form and what you/husband put down.

What's the 'up to date' name for a housewife then if it's too 1950s?

CountFosco · 05/09/2020 08:57

This category is usually set by whoever has applied.

This is not true, as I said above as soon as I said DH and I worked PT the algorithm changed the occupation of both of us to housewife.

Thisismytimetoshine · 05/09/2020 09:05

For fuck's sake, op, if you succeed in changing your status to Avon Lady your premiums will probably increase. Is that a desirable outcome for you?!

I'm a housewife and SAHM to 3DC and I'm actually angry at your negativity towards it?!
No; its not 1950 but I'm extremely happy to be at home for our children. If I wanted a job; my husband would help me sort out my CV and look for one. Full support. The option is always there for me.
Why is the term housewife so abhorrent to you?!

I don't think the op will be back and has probably name changed. Didn't get the support for slagging off housewives that she was hoping for
Localocal · 05/09/2020 18:52

This pissed me off for all 19 years I was a SAHM. This isn't 1955. I'm not in the house all day because I'm a WIFE I'm at in the house all day because I'm a PARENT. No shade on women of my mothers' generation - my mom was laid off from her job as soon as she was pregnant. But nowadays that category should say Houseparent.

SentientAndCognisant · 05/09/2020 19:06

House parent sounds like a boarding school matron

Thisismytimetoshine · 05/09/2020 19:07

Houseparent 😂. Get over yourself!

SentientAndCognisant · 05/09/2020 19:09

@Thisismytimetoshine I’m hearing that as Irish. You Irish?

purpleme12 · 05/09/2020 19:11

But it shouldn't. Not all people have children do they.
There is actually the option of houseparent and there is the option of housewife and househusband.

Thisismytimetoshine · 05/09/2020 19:12

Sentient Yes.

shinynewapple2020 · 05/09/2020 19:14

@ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup

Not a 'stay at home mother', I am self employed and yes I do make my own money - what an odd question.
TBF OP you started off this completely outraged post where you expected us to all understand but unless you state in your OP we have no clue if you are a stay at home parent , a self employed entrepreneur or a brain surgeon. We don't know you ! So, yes , you may be a housewife . If you were married , not employed and not at home because you are looking after children then that would most likely make you a housewife . We don't know you !
ChipsAndKetchup · 05/09/2020 19:14

Domestic engineer?

SentientAndCognisant · 05/09/2020 19:18

@Thisismytimetoshine, sure made me laugh

eveningfalls · 05/09/2020 20:12

Domestic engineer? 🤣

MsEllany · 05/09/2020 21:21

I’m not sure OP is coming back.

But it’s struck me that she’s been very clear that she sorts out the insurance - which means that she either chose housewife as her profession or....something else? I don’t know, most forms won’t let you get past without answering that.
