I'm a fucking HOUSEWIFE?

Just had the car insurance renewal on DH's car. I am a named driver, and the details listed state that I am a 'housewife'. How the fuck is this even a category?

Having to put housewife as my occupation increased my car insurance by £100 one year.

I work part time and was surprised by my existing insurance quote being much more than online forms I'd filled in including my job.

I called up to ask about it and apparently I didn't work enough hours to qualify as employed in an occupation so I had to either be a housewife or unemployed.

I guess their algorithms say housewives cost them more in claims....

Gunpowder · 02/09/2020 21:15

Agree it’s sexist wankery but it makes your insurance cheaper! I’m part time self employed but that added £150 to my premium.

RosieLemonade · 02/09/2020 21:16

Self-employed doing what?

wizzbangfizz · 02/09/2020 21:16

Isn't a SAHM a housewife? I too recoil from the idea and did so when my sister said that was on her passport but she shrugged and said that's what she is.

JM10 · 02/09/2020 21:16

Housewife is fine if that's what you are, unemployed would be the only other option. I would want to know that househusband was an option too though.

If you are also employed then you should get it changed. I wouldn't want to risk my insurance not paying out over it.

Gunpowder · 02/09/2020 21:17

X posted with Brrrr, how weird!

ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup · 02/09/2020 21:17

Are you in charge of the house cleaning, tidying, cooking, laundry, shopping, random errands, food planning/ budgeting, clothes sorting/ buying/ getting ready for the day activities, feed the pets, decorating? And the children? Food, nappies, naps, toys, colouring books, reading/ learning to speak/ writing, entertaining, taking to park/ school/ activities/ soft play, homework helper now recently promoted to teacher, nurse- wound healer, sibling relationship therapist....
Because if you are, you can proudly say you are a housewife. Being a housewife is actually a tough job!

No, that's called parenting, and also the mental load.

I'm a single mum. I'm down as homemaker. Much better than housewife Smile

Ginger1982 · 02/09/2020 21:18

So you think being a SAHM means you are self employed?

BeingLonely · 02/09/2020 21:18

If you are self employed fair enough but if you don’t have a job then the classification is housewife or unemployed. Do you make your own money?

nancybotwinbloom · 02/09/2020 21:19

Why is it bothering you? What did you want them to put?

Are you employed in any other capacity? If not then you are a housewife surely?

RaspberryToupee · 02/09/2020 21:20

@ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup

If necessary, my job title.
What is your job title?

Insurance companies have very few job titles. They certainly don’t have my actual job title and they never have. When they don’t know where to stick me, they wrongly try to shove me in HR, procurement or put me down as an administrator. I’m none of those things. I sigh, roll my eyes and move on.

I had this explained to me, if you're not at a place of employment all day ie unemployed, housewife, retired then you're likely to be driving here and there more therefore more a risk of an accident. Have a look at the cost if your daily work involves driving in any way shape or form! £££££££
Fatted · 02/09/2020 21:22

Have you renewed the policy? (Completely misses the point of thread)

SqidgeBum · 02/09/2020 21:23

But ... wouldnt saying self employed be basically lying, because you arent going to be travelling for work etc. A SAHM has different uses for a car compared to someone who is working.

As a SAHM, I get the idea that the word 'housewife' has old fashioned connotations, but there is also no other term for what we do. We are housewives, but I know the job I do is a hard one. Its not the 1950s. Housewives who raise kids are valued and people know we have brain cells. I think your issue with the word is more in your own mind and view of yourself.

ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup · 02/09/2020 21:23

Not a 'stay at home mother', I am self employed and yes I do make my own money - what an odd question.

Well what's your paid employment job title then?

Or is it a side hustle Envy

Self employed isn’t a job title.

What do you do?

On the plus side though your hone insurance is a lot cheaper as they assume you're at home most of the day so less likely to get burgled so it all evens out Grin

OhCaptain · 02/09/2020 21:26

You’re being weird and aggressive @ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup.

Why don’t you just change it to your job title (that you won’t say on here)?

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 02/09/2020 21:27

You flog perfume on Facebook don't you Grin

Babyroobs · 02/09/2020 21:27

It's an awful term.

eurochick · 02/09/2020 21:27

I'm down on our current mortgage as a housewife. I bristled. I'm actually the main breadwinner and have been throughout our relationship. When we were applying for our mortgage I was taking 6 weeks off between jobs. The job move was causing issues with timing so we decided to use my husband as the main borrower. The broker said "I'll just put you down as housewife". I was so wrung out by the process I let him. I pay most of the mortgage.
