I'm a fucking HOUSEWIFE?

ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup · 02/09/2020 20:55

Just had the car insurance renewal on DH's car. I am a named driver, and the details listed state that I am a 'housewife'. How the fuck is this even a category?

OP posts:
Tubs11 · 03/09/2020 19:50

I'd say you're great fun on a night out OP Hmm

mbosnz · 03/09/2020 19:51

Spoken like a true housewife trying to justify not having a job!

It took you far too well to come up with that well-worn gem. . .

mbosnz · 03/09/2020 19:55

I can see now why my friend who really has absolutely no need or want of a job outside the home, was a bit defensive on the subject when I asked her what she did.

Funny thing is, I've had people tear strips off me for 'taking a job from someone wot needs it', in the past, because I didn't need to work, just wanted to. . .

Typical woman's position, damned if we do, damned if we don't. And the most vicious of critics, usually women. LOL. Doing men's work for them.

Miraf1 · 03/09/2020 19:56

"Hardest job in the world". You should be on the stage, like Bill Burr. Check him out on YouTube using those four words.

NWojtanowski · 03/09/2020 19:59

Just because it isn't 1950, that does not mean that the term "housewife" is somehow gone from existence. I am curious as to what the OP thinks a Housewife is exactly? Maybe the definition changed for her to be so annoyed and insulted by being referred to as one. What is so derogatory about being a housewife, OP? I am quite proud and thankful that my partner makes enough so that I can be home to raise our children and care for our home. Now that they are getting slightly older, I have decided to start a business from our home as well. Business or not though, first and foremost, I am a proud mother and a proud housewife.

Miraf1 · 03/09/2020 20:00

That should say five words. Silly mistake.

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/09/2020 20:05

Why all the angst about it's an outdated term!! when the job description (as it were) itself remains the same?
It's like the rebranding of toilet cleaners as Sanitation Engineers.
I doubt the new title makes cleaning other people's shit any sweeter.

Cydonia · 03/09/2020 20:09

I’m just here to say that “moggy” should not have been on the insurance form. The correct term is “Domestic Short/Long Hair” Grin I know this as I’m a veterinary nurse, which is pretty much never on a drop down list of occupations. I can be a veterinary surgeon, or a kennel assistant, but not my actual job title. Annoying, but I’m not going to start a ranty thread about it......

threatmatrix · 03/09/2020 20:11

Stop being pathetic, if you stay at home and don’t work and your husband dies your a housewife what’s the big deal, it’s just a word

threatmatrix · 03/09/2020 20:12

That should say does. I’m not wanting him to die 🙈🙈🙈

widgie · 03/09/2020 20:15

What’s wrong with being a housewife ? Women had it easy in the old days no pressure to work, juggle their lives, climb up the slippery glass ceilinged pole. Missing out on kids growing up , the list goes on .

Harvestsquirrel1 · 03/09/2020 20:15

I’m a housewife, but I gave myself the title of CEO of Domestic Affairs-it makes me feel important. It has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?

GlassInEachHand · 03/09/2020 20:21

Re the legality of taking out car insurance for someone else - I'm fairly sure that I've done this for 17-year-old DCs who had to be listed as main drivers but were not old enough to submit the application on their own.

LouisBalfour · 03/09/2020 20:23

SAHM = housewife to most people.

VeggieSausageRoll · 03/09/2020 20:24

Come back OP, we need to know!

Darkstarrheart · 03/09/2020 20:32

@Babs709

What do you mean by 'deem acceptable'? I'm not being snobby, I'm not a housewife because I'm not a wife! If someone asked your profession, what would you say?
Depends who was asking. Official form I'd say carer- you or someone else I don't know I'd say mind your own business.
Babs709 · 03/09/2020 20:37

Depends who was asking. Official form I'd say carer- you or someone else I don't know I'd say mind your own business. I think “mind your own business” would be acceptable Smile I guess the trouble with carer/SAHM is that those are fundamentally different things than being a “housewife”. And being a “housewife” is not the same as being unemployed - a “housewife” traditionally has a job (running the home) it just doesn’t happen to be paid.

Herewego2015 · 03/09/2020 20:45

I'm with original poster, I would be a little annoyed if I was put down as housewife! I take care of my home (with my husband) we look after our children together and we both also work.... I do wonder if a man would automatically be put down as a house husband..... Doubt it very much Hmm

Jason118 · 03/09/2020 20:48

I'd like to know the other 9 things in the OPs top ten angry making items Grin I bet left up toilet seats is at number 6.

carreterra · 03/09/2020 20:50

@SouthWestLolly
"Glad your HB is getting his oats"

Grin

No, seriously, I remember an initial assessment with a midwife at antenatal. when | was expecting my 2nd baby, and she wrote H/W on the form, couldn't even write "housewife" in full. I felt terrible, as if I'd lost my entire identity.

Dadtimes3 · 03/09/2020 20:51

I guess it’s better for all parties than a non f*ing housewife.

NomDePrune · 03/09/2020 20:55

Can you cancel the cheque?

expatinspain · 03/09/2020 20:56

This is such a weird thread. OP is angry about being listed as a housewife, but didn’t state in the first post that she had a job. I still don’t know why she was listed as a housewife, rather than her actual job title. I mean, self employed people have job titles, so I’m none the wiser who is at fault here or why the OP’s occupation is listed as ‘housewife’ as her subsequent posts have shed no light on either of these questions 😂

oknowimscared · 03/09/2020 21:06

Haven’t RTFT, but if you’re self employed, why wouldn’t you put what your job is? There’s an insurance difference between being a self employed accountant / fire-eater

MidnightCitrus · 03/09/2020 21:09

@Herewego2015

I do not have another job, I have one job. This was not asked for when we took the insurance, I would have stated self employed.

I deal with the insurance, so don't need to have a word with dh. Have changed provider.

but who would you be angry with? the person that put you down as Housewife? which was the OP themselves, because there is no way the insurance company would not need that information
