Have you put the heating on yet?

Its chilly here where I am and been raining most of the day.

Some irrational part of my brain refuses to put the heating on before September. It isn't even officially autumn until the end of September, maybe I should hold off until then?Hmm

Disclaimer...this is a very lighthearted thread Grin

I might tentatively suggest we put it on this evening. DP is usually warmer than I am, so we'll probably compromise with the gas fire on in the living room.

2tired2bewitty · 28/08/2020 16:53

It’s cold and wet here in the north east, and we definitely haven’t had the heat wave the south has been experiencing. I haven’t turned the heating on yet, but once the kids are back at school and there’s uniform to get dry I might have to.

Biancadelrioisback · 28/08/2020 16:54

North East here and no way will the heating be going on anytime soon. I'm still using the fan and sleeping with the windows open

Itshissister · 28/08/2020 16:55

@NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs

No. Been far too hot! (Peri menopause)
When I was pregnant through winter, my poor partner and children were freezing because I was too hot with the heating up Grin

Thermostat set at 16. If it drops below 16 then yes heating will come on 🤷🏻‍♀️. 16 isn't exactly warm! At the end of September I'll change that to 19 probably.

Itshissister · 28/08/2020 16:57

I condition my children to shut doors in the winter.

Then in summer I yell at them to leave the doors open for air.

Now I am back to yelling SHUT THE DOOR IT'S FREEZING Confused

Been on for a couple of hours this afternoon to take the chill off.

Graphista · 28/08/2020 16:58

I resist for as long as possible and I’m gonna be even worse this year as had a bout of intertrigo which I am having trouble completely eradicating and the heating being on definitely makes it worse!

I’m a bit of a Scrooge on this front anyway and would rather layer up and have hot drinks before succumbing to needing to put the heating on.

16°c here today and not looking to go below that any time soon hopefully.

But I’m lucky enough to live alone so only myself to suit

Living alone has its benefits! Heating arrangements are certainly up there!! absolutely

It was definitely harder when dd still lived at home as she is extremely slim and so feels the cold. Plus she’d be an awkward bugger about not dressing appropriately! She’d be moaning she was cold while wearing a strappy vest and shorts in bloody October! Put some bloody clothes on!

She’d then put it on and I’d be melting!!

What I do need to sort out after far too long living here is how to sort the boiler so it’s not on all day at first! Been here 3 years and still don’t know how to work the damn timer!

We hold off as long as possible as CH plays havoc with my sinuses. ugh same here!!

Makes no sense to run your heating by the calendar in the UK totally agree I’ve lived all over the Uk and you can have a cool june and a roasting late September with no warning!

Here in Scotland we tend to get a heatwave most years around Easter time, then it’s freezing again till beginning of July!

AskingforaBaskin · 28/08/2020 16:58

I refuse to put it on in August.
My family could resemble an Everest climber before I put on the heating in August

Desperado24 · 28/08/2020 17:02

I know people like you and genuinely don’t understand why it’s ok to have the house at 16 in August but 19 in October.

It’s actually the total opposite to what you would do logically given that in August you are normally dressed in August clothes and in winter are wearing winter clothes - on that basis the thermostat should be lower in the winter to compensate for the extra clothing. Makes no sense at all other than a physiological or placebo effect.

Boatonthehorizon · 28/08/2020 17:02

My heating is also on 24/7/365.
It's on a thermostat and kerosene house at steady temp 19 degrees all year round. I sometimes boost it to 20/21/22 in evenings in winter.
It's much cheaper to keep it steady than it going up and down and cold houses cause damp, cold walls (and unhappiness).
£70 a month well spent. (Gas and electricity) One of my cheaper bills too. Also in Yorkshire ☺

Boatonthehorizon · 28/08/2020 17:03

Keeps not kerosene. Autocorrect! 😂

JoleneExotic · 28/08/2020 17:05

@Desperado24 more because I don't want the heating on over summer unless I deliberately put it on but I also want it to come on if it's chuffing Baltic at any point. Not a great deal different to switching it off entirely other than a freak frosty patch wont affect the pipes. . Works for me! I accept the heating will be on from the end of Sept probably through to March.

Smelborp · 28/08/2020 17:06

I’ve still got the windows open! It’s fresh and raining out but I like the cold.

BackforGood · 28/08/2020 17:06

Good grief no. It's not October yet!

Seriously though, we now have thermostat, so it isn't even "off" as it used to be with our old heating system, but it isn't cold enough to 'kick in' if you have the thermostat set at a reasonable (jumper wearing) level.

Chloemol · 28/08/2020 17:09

No, but my big fluffy dressing gown has been out a couple of times now

JustAPassingFashion · 28/08/2020 17:11

Yes, I'm bloody freezing and have two loads of non - dryer friendly washing to dry Confused

DuesToTheDirt · 28/08/2020 17:13

I was shivering yesterday and ended up in a long sleeved top, a thin jumper plus a fleece, really not like me. In the evening DH put the gas fire on.

Alfiemoon1 · 28/08/2020 17:14

I’ve just adjusted my thermostat so it will kick in I feel the cold so put layers on but I think the dog is shivering and we haven’t even been out yet as its rained all day

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 28/08/2020 17:16

10 minutes ago. I'm wearing socks and slippers and my feet are still freezing. If I don't warm up before bed I'll be freezing all night even though I turn off the heat at night. If I go to bed cold I seem to stay that way.

DominaShantotto · 28/08/2020 17:18

Nope - I'm in the conservatory (only space I can have for my PC setup to work and it's just hit the point where I've put a hoodie and slippers on to warm up a bit but it's still pretty fine round here.

EasilyDelighted · 28/08/2020 17:20

It got too warm after a couple of hours and I switched it off again. Got the clothes dry but I've been working in the kitchen with bare feet and the back door wide open for the last couple of hours.

Feelinggoodtuesday · 28/08/2020 17:23

Yes, yesterday in fact. It be cold in these parts. And grey and miserable.

Boatonthehorizon · 28/08/2020 17:24

Why suffer? We're not in the middle ages!
It's only £2.10 a day. I bet you all shop and are relatively well off.
Jumpers and heated blankets etc are more expensive than heating.

PaperMonster · 28/08/2020 17:29

No. I try and last as long as possible til it goes on as it’s flipping expensive. But my windows are all still open all day here as it hasn’t been cold enough to either close them or put the heating on. I did have the electric blanket on one evening last week as I was feeling a bit off colour and shivery.
