Have you put the heating on yet?

Its chilly here where I am and been raining most of the day.

Some irrational part of my brain refuses to put the heating on before September. It isn't even officially autumn until the end of September, maybe I should hold off until then?Hmm

Disclaimer...this is a very lighthearted thread Grin

Been on for a while off and on but we are in Scotland.

Crunchymum · 29/08/2020 11:36

We follow the October "rule" here.

Not sure why?

I normally crank it on about now to make sure it is actually working (much easier to get it repaired at leisure than when you actually need it) but wouldn't dream of having the heating on in August / Sept.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/08/2020 11:45

Modern thermostats - and I'm referring to this century, not just this year - also include timers so you can set it to 14 during the day and overnight and 21 first thing and in the evening, if you want to

And they have app control and a boost button if you just want the heating to come on for a bit.

Ours is set as off overnight and in the daytime and then on for a short period in the morning and most of the evening. If I'm cold in the daytime I can press the boost button and it comes on for a bit, I usually set this for half an hour but it can be any time I like.

As the app can control it from anywhere and you're out when it comes on, you can turn it off if you don't want to heat an empty house. Or if you're coming home you can turn it on to come home to a warm house.

@toffeecashews

This is what always makes me smile about how hide-bound so many MNetters are! How about-

It's not cold though! We've got the laundry out in the garden and the first load I put out earlier on is already dry, it's really sunny so we've got the windows and doors open. Why would we need the heating on?

It is cold in some places, though. It's 12, feels like 9 thanks to the strong North wind we currently have in my bit of the Northeast, with the odd bit of drizzle and rain forecast in an hour or so. The bathroom window is cracked open and the blind flapping wildly but the bedrooms only got their regulation 10 minutes airing, this morning, because it was too cold and doors were slamming. Despite the breeze, everything feels a bit clammy and i'll be sticking to tumble dryer friendly laundry, today.

If the heating kicks in, this evening, I won't be arguing with it.

Apolloanddaphne · 29/08/2020 11:57

We live on the east coast of Scotland and we live in a fairly chilly house so we put the heating on whenever we want to. It doesn't matter what time of year it is. In the summer months it sometimes just needs a quick hour to take the chill off then it is fine. I really don't care about other people's self made rules. I prefer to be comfortable.

OhTheRoses · 29/08/2020 11:59

Fact is during the day and in the evenings I am perfectly happy to put on a jersey or extra jersey. I am not happy getting up and showered in the cold.

whirlwindwallaby · 29/08/2020 12:24

We are in a new build, this century. Thermostat can only be set to one temperature, set to go on and off up to three times a day. If I wanted it lower overnight I would have to adjust it manually to a lower temperature, but if I set it to, say, 12 overnight in the winter then it would still be that temperature when I got up in the morning. Instead I have it set to turn off at 9pm and come on again at 5am.

whirlwindwallaby · 29/08/2020 12:27

Oh, and it's not cold here, currently 16 outside and feels warmer inside. I have windows open and I am in jeans, jumper, and barefoot.

toffeecashews · 29/08/2020 13:09

Of course the weather is different in different places. So if I say it's not cold that's not a reason to quote me and say I am hidebound when you have no idea of my local climate, my disposition or whether I can even afford to have the heating on. Some families have to have strict rules about the heating because they need to keep the bills down.

3rd load of laundry is out on the line drying now, another load in the wash. Great weather for it.

Thecobwebsarewinning · 29/08/2020 13:13

I lit a fire in the log burner this morning, partly because it was cold and partly because it was so gloomy. Having a fire brightened things up.

We have the thermostats set to 18 downstairs and 17 upstairs so the heat will kick in when it’s needed but we’re not there yet.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/08/2020 13:14

I have today. Thermometer outside the kitchen window was reading 13 point something, and we’re in SW London. Had a guest arriving so that was my excuse!

It’s 16.1 now, at ten past one.

Funny how you suggest that I'm insinuating that it's cold everywhere when I was countering your assertion that it's not cold. You might enjoy point scoring by implying I don't understand or care about other people's situations, btw, but I CBA with the professionally offended line you seem to be pushing, all because my weather is not the same as yours.

My second load of previously soiled bedding is in the dryer. I'd love to be able to hang it out. It will probably need washing yet again, tomorrow.

tornadoalley · 29/08/2020 14:03

It turned itself on via the thermostat. we didn't turn it off

Backtobasics5 · 29/08/2020 14:04

Yes. I’ve had to put my heating on a few times not for long just to warm up. I can’t bare a cold house.

No, what I'm taking issue with is you calling me hidebound.

FinallyFluid · 29/08/2020 14:08

@Frownette

You're doing well *@FinallyFluid*
Thank you I feel really well.

Where did I use that word? You are either mixing me up with someone else or putting words into my mouth.
BashfulClam · 29/08/2020 16:01

Of course, I live in Scotland.

Theelderscrolls · 29/08/2020 16:04

It's never really been off 😭 But I do live in the north of Scotland.

sqirrelfriends · 29/08/2020 21:08

Ours went on today.

16c here today and a really cold wind, I hope tomorrow is better as we are meant to be having a bbq.

Bwlch · 29/08/2020 21:19

It's the middle of the night and in the high 20s where I am. I'm sat outside in shorts and a vest top. The heating is definitely not on.

Bluebellbike · 29/08/2020 22:49

I'm in the North West. Lit the multi fuel stove yesterday evening as it was very chilly. This morning it was also chilly so the heating went on for the first time since March, just for a couple of hours. At least I know it works before the real cold weather starts.

cherryblossommorningstoday · 30/08/2020 08:48

Ours is on.

If it's cold enough it kicks in.

What month it is, is totally irrelevant if it's cold!

nosswith · 30/08/2020 09:34

No, but I have a jumper on for the first time in several months.

AdaFromYorkshire · 30/08/2020 22:41

Heating won't go on for weeks but it was so comforting to put on a woolly jumper and thick socks this morning.
