Have you put the heating on yet?

Its chilly here where I am and been raining most of the day.

Some irrational part of my brain refuses to put the heating on before September. It isn't even officially autumn until the end of September, maybe I should hold off until then?Hmm

Disclaimer...this is a very lighthearted thread Grin

Yes, just now!

olderthanyouthink · 28/08/2020 16:09

No, I got thermostat radiator valves and set temperatures for each room so that determines when the heating comes on.

It's currently 25.5 in the living room and 24 in the bedroom we had a window open till it rained. We're in London and have not great sash windows but they're huge and south facing so it's like a greenhouse.

MarshaBradyo · 28/08/2020 16:09

No still warm

BestOption · 28/08/2020 16:10

Nope, but I'm in the SE. it's still about 18deg here today, a huge 10 deg drop from last week & 20deg drop from the week before ~ when it was so bloody hot you couldn't breathe! Hard to imagine now 😢

Mine will go on when I feel the house feels cold/damp though. I'll just put a jumper/socks on in the unlikely event of me being cold.

The calendar certainly doesn't dictate it!!

I don't leave the heating set on at a certain temperature though because I find some days I'm fine at a set temperature & other days I'm hot/cold at the same temperature

When it's reliably cold I set the heating to come on half an hour before I get home from work so I know it'll be nice to come into. I don't have it on in the mornings as I end up waking up feeling sick & I'm up & out before it has time to heat up if I leave it until I'm awake.

Living alone has its benefits! Heating arrangements are certainly up there!!

@VintageStitchers. What type of boiler do you have?

Ifailed · 28/08/2020 16:13

A nest thermostat is very easy to fit and would pay for itself fairly quickly
Really - the cheapest I can see is over £200, that would cover my gas for most of the winter!

Ariela · 28/08/2020 16:14

Admittedly we are in the softy South, but our heating won't go on this year or till the temp drops below 2 degrees outside for 2 consecutive days.

sunshinecounty · 28/08/2020 16:15

Central heating- no
Wood burner- yes

MJMG2015 · 28/08/2020 16:16

@Thebreadsouth

I'm on the train home from visiting my dad who has his heating set constantly to 29. Twenty. Fucking. Nine. All the windows closed and smokes in the house. It's like some sort of torture or endurance test living like that and I hate visiting him. I'm going home to open all my windows and take 27 showers to refresh.
How long were you there?

Sorry, I know it's your Dad, but I coukd not cope with being in the house with him smoking, let alone all closed up AND the heating in 29!! I'd have to make other arrangements!

BarbaraofSeville · 28/08/2020 16:20

Heating is on 24/7/365 and the thermostat decides when it kicks in and puts the rads on

Same here, and I came on this thread because that time was about 20 minutes ago, before then I don't think it's been on since about March. The radiators and pipes started making odd gurgling noises and startled all the cats.

We have a Hive thermostat so it doesn't generally need touching apart from the odd boost if we're unexpectedly home in the daytime, although now I'm full time WFH, I'll probably need to reprogramme it as it's still on the pre COVID setting for out at work all day and out and about most of the daytime at the weekend too.

Makes no sense to run your heating by the calendar in the UK, we can just as easily have cold and raining in August, like today as it happens, as quite warm and sunny in March or November. We've got near frost temperatures forecast overnight at the weekend, FFS.

EasilyDelighted · 28/08/2020 16:24

Yes, whacked the thermostat up for a couple of hours this morning to get a few bits of washing dry (had to bring them in off the line because of rain). It was lovely. Unusual for us though, we don't feel the cold much and have the thermostat at 18 during the day so it's not usually on for a few more weeks yet.

doadeer · 28/08/2020 16:25

I don't care what month it is, if I feel chilly I pop it on for half an hour. I have a very warm flat so it heats quickly

Summersnearlyover · 28/08/2020 16:28

I’m in the south and it’s overcast but still humid here. Did the housework in T shirt and pants this morning.
Heating will go on when son signs that he’s cold, it doesn’t matter what month it is.

StyleandBeautyfail · 28/08/2020 16:29

WFH is going to have everyones bills soaring .

Hyperion100 · 28/08/2020 16:32

We've still got all the windows and doors open!

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 28/08/2020 16:33

OP yup, November! I’m in a well insulated home and I hate feeling stuffy. I’d rather it was cool and I put layers on than I felt too hot. When it’s on, it’s set to click on at 23dgs. And October is usually humid and damp.

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 28/08/2020 16:33

Ex installed a google nest and now I've changed internet provider I haven't a clue what to do with it

Holothane · 28/08/2020 16:33

No it’s lovely for me no cooking, love colder night can curl up.

Desperado24 · 28/08/2020 16:33

Horses for courses then.

£200 would heat our house for about two weeks in the depths of winter.

moostermum · 28/08/2020 16:35

Not the heating but had the fire on in the front room a few times in the last week (up north) 🔥

tiredanddangerous · 28/08/2020 16:37

No. It's 19 degrees in my house.

Pudding51 · 28/08/2020 16:39

Yes , cracked at 3pm it's only 13 ' here and a brisk northeasterly wind.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 28/08/2020 16:41

No. The house isn't cold enough yet, it's still around 20. It is cool outside though, only 15.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 28/08/2020 16:42

Today, just for a little bit, it's more dampness than anything I.e this mornings damp towels from showering won't dry, hate that feeling.

Oblomov20 · 28/08/2020 16:44

No. But at 16-19 degrees in Surrey, It's fine.

usernamenotavailable247 · 28/08/2020 16:46

I moved into my house end of May and have only had the heating on about twice, not recently. Its not a cold house at all and I'm a bit tight
