Have you put the heating on yet?

Its chilly here where I am and been raining most of the day.

Some irrational part of my brain refuses to put the heating on before September. It isn't even officially autumn until the end of September, maybe I should hold off until then?Hmm

Sorry posted too soon. 19 would be fine at the moment. We usually have it set to 17/18 once we're in to Autumn & the daytime temps are 16 or below each day & the mornings & nights are cooler. When they drop to 12 or under a lot it normally gets moved up to 19. It's always set at 16 overnight as none of us like warm bedrooms. I don't worry about putting it on if I'm cold though (we have a thermostat that you set the day & night time temps on & can override without messing up the those).

RedRiverShore · 29/08/2020 07:49

One good thing about having the heating on this early in the year is that any small niggles can be investigated and sorted out before the cold weather sets in. I had the heating on yesterday and realised that 2 of the bedroom thermostat valves are not working properly, one is stuck on and the other is stuck off, the pin is probably stuck but don't like to fiddle with it myself in case it leaks so will check again tonight and then book engineer in the week if needed.

RedRiverShore · 29/08/2020 07:54

19-21 is about right for me depends if I am doing stuff, temp is about 18-19 here at the moment but we will be busy today so will put heating on when sitting down this evening.

cantknowwhoiam · 29/08/2020 07:58

Absolutely it's been on! Can't understand why people say they aren't putting it on before a certain date 🤔why be cold 🤪

EasilyDelighted · 29/08/2020 08:09

We have ours set to 18 morning and evening, 12 during the day on weekdays (we're normally all out) and overnight all year round. 18 is fine for pottering about in the mornings, it can be a little chilly in the evenings once you sit down for a while but we just override it manually if needs be, it goes back to it's programmed schedule so doesn't get left on high by mistake.

In general it's pretty warm here still, Hampshire, with daytime temps around 20 and night time around 10 so we don't really need it yet, still got the back door open all day while WFH and wearing teeshirts and sandals but it was handy to get that last bit of damp off laundry yesterday. I don't hesitate to put it on if there's a properly cold snap though.

speakout · 29/08/2020 08:12

I dont use a thermostat for my heating- always adjust manually.

I don't always want my house to be the same temperature.
On an active day I may be back from the gym and very warm, or I may be changing bedding, hoovering, washing floors, windows wide open even on a cold day, an inside temperature of 14 degrees is adequate.
But I may be having some movie time in the evening, tired and wanting comfort, so I will set the heating to 21 or 22 if I am feeling cold.

muckycat · 29/08/2020 08:16

No, I quite like being colder. I think it comes from living in a draughty flat for years, got so used to it i would have the bedroom window open year round to hear the sea at night. chilly bliss!! admittedly though I did have the electric blanket on low for a short time to take the edge off in bed as it was freezing even for me when i got in.

onanotherday · 29/08/2020 08:25

Blush.. for half an hour last night to take the chill off! Shhhh

EsmereldaMargaretNoteSpelling · 29/08/2020 08:33

Not on here, was 15° here yesterday, I'm sat around in jeans and a t-shirt. I dislike being cold so am not averse to having the heading on whenever I need it. That's not yet though.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 29/08/2020 08:43

Not cold here - I have the windows and back door open for through breeze.

paintmegood · 29/08/2020 08:46

@YellowandGreenToBeSeen

Nope. Thermostat switched off. Felt a tad chilly last night but whacked a sweatshirt on and all was fine.

No heating on till around November normally.

Yes, this. I hate having the heating on and absolutely would not put it on in August! When everyone has socks and jumpers on and are still cold, the heating can go on.
BiteyShark · 29/08/2020 09:13

Well I have just packed the air conditioning unit away in preparation for heating the house rather than cooling it Grin

lucysmam · 29/08/2020 09:57

Mine put itself on, not long after I got up, this morning. I left it for half an hour to warm up a bit then turned it off manually.

I was tempted yesterday but the girls both said they were warm enough so I just stuck an extra layer on.

CarrieFour · 29/08/2020 10:11

No.

Enjoying the jumpers and blankets on the sofa and snuggling down into bed.

Although our thermostat even with the windows open this morning still says 19.

CarrieFour · 29/08/2020 10:16

Our thermostat has been turned down to about 15 for the summer.

In the winter we set it to 18/19 (then whack it higher manually if we want to) but I'm happy for the whole house to really get a good cool down before we start having the heating on daily.

After a hot summer my brain sort of associates cool air with getting the house clean. My daughters bedroom is a weird shape and has a warm pocket in one corner and under her cabin bed. So until that's got a nice cool down I won't change the thermostat.

PickAChew · 29/08/2020 10:19

@safariboot

*The whole point of a thermostat is that it keeps your house at a constant temperature that you are happy with.

Why would you open windows to make your house colder than the temperature you like? I don’t get it*

Like most British homes, we don't have air conditioning. When we get unpleasant summer heat, the heating has to be off and the house allowed to get "too cold" at night to limit how hot it gets the following day.

But when it's hot outside, the thermostat doesn't turn the heating on. Even with the windows open!

Modern thermostats - and I'm referring to this century, not just this year - also include timers so you can set it to 14 during the day and overnight and 21 first thing and in the evening, if you want to.
ShakeaHettyFeather · 29/08/2020 10:33

Living room underfloor heating kicked in yesterday evening. It had been too cold and wet for windows to be open, all day.

Heat in the floor means 18 is sufficient to get me warm along with my socks and huge warm fleece. Other zones don't kick in until colder or radiators are turned on.

speakout · 29/08/2020 10:33

Yes- I have a new system, my schedule can never be planned like that.
No two days are the same, and I often don't know even a day ahead what everyone will be doing/ who will be at home.

toffeecashews · 29/08/2020 10:51

This is what always makes me smile about how hide-bound so many MNetters are! How about-

It's not cold though! We've got the laundry out in the garden and the first load I put out earlier on is already dry, it's really sunny so we've got the windows and doors open. Why would we need the heating on?

lazylinguist · 29/08/2020 10:54

Because it's not cold! Our house is well insulated and the weather is good, we don't need to heat the house when the thermostat (in the coolest part of the house) says it's 19 degrees. We switch the thermostat to off in about March and it stays off all summer apart from it's little digital display showing the current temperature. We have a garden which has the sun from the early morning until late afternoon (not south facing) and that heats up the back of the house nicely. Helpfully the houses on our road are designed to maximise the sun as ours have the main living space at the back and the ones opposite have the main living space at the front. We've got the better deal though as we have the sun on our gardens most of the day whereas they only get it in the late afternoon/evening.

I quite often want to air my house, or particular rooms, when it is not warm outside. Temperature isn't the only consideration. Neither is comfort, actually. I have no particular desire for my house to be exactly the same temperature all the time. A temperature that feels ideal one day might feel to hot the next. It depends what I'm doing, what I'm wearing, what time of day it is, whether I'm in the house a lot etc. Also I'd rather be a bit too cold than a bit too hot.

Heating went on this morning. I'm not staying cold out of principle, which is ridiculous. I woke up and the house was colder than it was some winter mornings.
WeAllHaveWings · 29/08/2020 11:07

Ours has been on for a couple of hours in the evening when it's been cooler, 15 degrees and sunny today where we are in Scotland, will probably not need it tonight.
