Does anybody else feel like crap due to the heat?

I'm a very pale person and don't bode well when it's this hot. I'm in London where we've had absolutely roasting, humid weather.

My flat becomes sauna-like and no amount of having the fan on or opening window's makes a difference.

For days I've felt completely drained, weak and nauseous.

I'm not moaning, I'm glad people take joy from the sun, I'm just wondering if anybody else finds they've been feeling very bleugh too?

Yes!! I agree. Unfortunately I live in France. Trying to persuade (french) dh that we need to move to the uk (up north!)

parrotonthesofa · 08/08/2020 23:22

I think part of the problem for you too is that I'm housing is not set up for this kind of weather so it's hard to. Keep the house cool. We have shutters so we keep all windows end shutters closed during the day so the house remains cool. So we're ok in the house, it's just we never wanna leave it!

parrotonthesofa · 08/08/2020 23:23

I don't know where that random ´l'm' before the word housing came from! Grin

inmylifeIlovedthemall · 08/08/2020 23:23

Ohhhh I have found my ‘tribe’ at long last.

Have suffered for years, but it is much, much, worse since the Menopause and I have been recently diagnosed with POTS.

The heat and humidity causes my blood pressure to drop very low, making me sweaty, nauseous, dizzy etc. I have even passed out due to it once or twice. The last time was getting off a train when I did a spectacular faint onto the platform.

My solution when hot weather is expected, is up early, open all the windows / doors until the outside temperature becomes higher than indoors, then close them all and pull down the blinds, close curtains etc. Then sit in front of a fan and do as little as possible.

Not always practical I know, but one benefit of my advancing years is that I can often avoid going anywhere on days like yesterday.

chloxhunt · 08/08/2020 23:24

Yes I've been ill today! I was sick this morning and a headache all day and my mum thinks it's down to the heat

Grandmi · 08/08/2020 23:27

I am now mid fifties and I used to be a sun worshiper!! I can honestly say that the thought of going to work tomorrow at a nursing home horrifies me ! I am a registered nurse so I cannot take a sicky and I wouldn’t do that to my colleagues...so please everyone think about me and my colleagues tomorrow!! We are also organising a lovely cream tea and all the trimmings for our residents to have some fun ...so many have not seen their relatives for months💕

Fifipop185 · 08/08/2020 23:29

DH has been feeling sick and dizzy in this heat, he is usually a sun worshiper and works outside in all weather. Was worried it was something else as no-one else IRL seems to be suffering. Now it's cooler in the house, and since pumping him full of cool drinks, he feels better. Glad it's not just him feeling it, but I hope you all feel better soon.

Von1986 · 08/08/2020 23:33

Oh gosh so many fellow sun sufferers! I'm so sorry that you're all struggling too.

I wasn't actually expecting so many replies. My DH absolutely loves weather like this and can't relate at all.

To answer the couple of questions: we do have a car but DH takes that to work and he doesn't get in until late. We don't have any outside space at all, just a porch 2m squared porch Grin

Its times like this I miss living up north and having a garden as a paddling pool would be lovely right about now.

Yeah I feel awful and I have a dodgy stomach which I'm sure is heat related.

We have a new puppy and we can't leave her for long so we can't even go to the beach and it's too hot to take her anywhere.

TheHauntedFishtank · 09/08/2020 07:11

Try rehydration sachets rather than just water, complete game-changer for me when I was struggling with the heat. Moved to Scotland and funnily enough it’s not such a problem these days!

Von1986 · 09/08/2020 09:38

I'm going to aim to get some rehydration sachets today.

I don't feel dehydrated but if they're helping other people then I'll definitely give them a try.

I'm still feeling very crap from yesterday and it hasn't even reached peak temperature today yet. It's going to be another long day.

HatakeKakashi · 09/08/2020 09:46

Question about the rehydration sachets - do you mean dioralyte? I'd like to try some too if it offers relief. I've been feeling so sick and shaky in this heat

orangejuicer · 09/08/2020 09:50

This thread is for me! I hate this weather so much.

I was feeling odd yesterday but hadn't put it down to the heat, so thank you for the enlightenment. It's probably that!

BearSoFair · 09/08/2020 10:17

I do. My IBS always seems to flare in sudden hot weather and recently I've started to get weather related headaches, usually on grey muggy days so I've had a rough few days!

Sennetti · 09/08/2020 10:24

I’ve bought an air con unit.... best money I’ve spent this year

We are in a 3 storey townhouse and the hot air rises to the top where we only have small windows. It’s bliss!

roundandsideways · 10/08/2020 11:21

I was fine for the first day or so, but today woke up feeling hungover. I've already drank 2 pints of water and no better. It's horrible.

QuestionableMouse · 10/08/2020 11:29

@Von1986

I'm well hydrated, I've kept the fridge stocked with bottled water and replace whenever I finish one.

I'm just absolutely shite when it comes to heat Sad

I have my front door open at the moment trying to cool down the flat somewhat.

Here's to hoping we get a break soon. Tuesday feels a long way away!

Don't just drink plain water. You want some rehydration salts so you're not throwing your system out of balance.

I use these but there are other options www.amazon.co.uk/stores/O.R.S+Hydration+Tablets/page/CAD73E7C-A8F7-4BEE-B90C-CF3F548C06D5?ref_=ast_bln&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

You could also look into a small AC unit.

itsgettingweird · 10/08/2020 11:32

I live on the coast.

Usually we get a nice breeze if you go down when tides coming in. Can obviously swim and paddle etc.

I lived in the Canary Islands for 6 years!

But this humidity has been something else.
We were on the beach on Saturday and you couldn't even get some respite in the shade. There was no air and no breeze. Not even any sun just this heavy air.

I did swim for a bit but it didn't remove the heavy feeling of air and like breathing through treacle.

I have real smother for those living in places like London. They have the highest temperatures and some areas are so built up. Plus the pollution is already higher and just adds to the heaviness.

elainesummers · 10/08/2020 11:33

I'm the same OP. I can't cope with heat at all. Like a PP, I end up feeling hungover.

I'm going to try rehydration salts I think in case that helps.

QuestionableMouse · 10/08/2020 11:33

I felt absolutely dire yesterday. Woke up with a migraine and struggled to shift it all day. I ended up laying in front of the fan with an ice pack on my head because it was the only thing that helped.

itsgettingweird · 10/08/2020 11:36

Can I add I actually love the sun and love hot weather.

But this isn't sunny days. This is humidity that's dangerous - hence the weather warnings.

It was regularly this hit when I lived in Tenerife.
But when it was this hit and a Calima (sand storm) it was a whole different story and also dangerous.

MaryZe · 10/08/2020 11:40

Yup. MS symptoms made so much worse with heat. Can't exercise (or do anything really!). But I love the blue skies

Yeeeet · 10/08/2020 12:03

I agree it's the humidity that makes it so much worse.

I've also woken up feeling hungover today, not great as we're due to go out for dinner and I'm dreading it.

chargeorge · 10/08/2020 12:08

felt bad in the heat at the weekend, a friend suggested no clothes for the whole day and came round to be with me - actually felt loads better not to have anything on, why didn't I think of it before! I'd recommend it to anyone

itsgettingweird · 10/08/2020 12:32

I also had some fab advice once on MN.

Freeze a bowl of ice.

Place it under the fan and as it melts and let's off cool air that's what gets circulated.

It's honestly life changing Grin
