Interesting interview in the Times yesterday with Sweden’s top epidemiologist - he says the evidence for mandatory masks is ‘astonishingly weak’ and that the policy could backfire

I agree with the article. Few of the comments below do though with the usual ranting that it gives more 'idiots' an excuse not to wear one when the science is clear it is PART of the solution.
A good one though was that they should be 'compulsory forever for aesthetic reasons 🤣😂🤣😂😂

John McAffee (of antivirus fame) was arrested because he was wearing a thong as a face mask (technically because he refused to replace it with a medical one when asked).

Think we're relatively lucky with teachers for next year - DD2 has the one who has currently been teaching DD1 - who I didn't warm to at first as she seemed very stern and distant but that's just her initial demeanour and actually she's a huge softy with a massive fun-loving streak when you get to know her. The fact that she has taught DD1 this year means she's got to know DD2 as well a fair bit and since the classes were allocated she's made a point of popping out to chat with DD2 when we've been picking up DD1 from school.

DD1 has actually lucked out in some ways - she ended up in a bubble of 7 before the holidays led by the guy who's now going to be her class teacher. Despite the pain of having the school bully in her bubble - she's clicked with the teacher and it's softened the transition for her as DD1 gets very attached to her teachers. So in a way - we've fallen on our feet with transitions - but only because my kids struggled so much with the situation and I fought to get them back into provision.

I am, however, still gutted that DD2's time with her absolutely superb year 2 teacher (and the school SENCO) got fucked up like it did. The school have absolutely the most wonderful year 2 teaching team - both teachers I've seen in action and have been in awe of how superb they are - and it's such a shame she didn't get the full benefit of it as she was really just starting to absolutely fly when Covid hit.

She had a shitty one in year 1 who got her so distressed and really only cared about the pretty high achieving girls and hid the SEN kids at the back for all the school plays - I was so pissed off about that as the other year 1 teacher is amazingly good and taught me personally so much getting back up to speed with the curriculum too.

Safety as performance art is spot on.
If masks are so important why the delay in making them mandatory on public transport, and then another delay for shops and then art galleries and museums a bit later.
My youngest is 10 (although looks older) and has yet to wear a mask.

countrygirl99 · 11/08/2020 14:37

Apparently Germany had anti mask demonstrations because they have issues with the far right. Other countries don't have issues with the far right so don't have anyone anti mask. I have asked which European countries don't have a far right movement. That could get interesting.

My salad today.

Oh god that salad looks yummy. I am on a diet and pictures of food are torture.
Just had an estate agent round to value the house. He came in wearing a mask. I told him to take it off and he was very relieved! Said he was melting in it.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 11/08/2020 15:17

Well I am doing My Bit because I hardly ever eat salad. But then again, I am a fatty! Boris would disapprove of the numbers on the scales. Now I don't know what to do.

Back home today after a few days away. Had a lovely time and apart from (patchy) track and trace procedures and a few people in masks it felt pretty ok. Now we're back in the house, working through the mountains of washing, it's too hot to do anything and the kids are climbing the walls. Sad

@LadyOfTheImprovisedBath

Our school is asking for proof of the outcome of tests - not sure how that would work in practise but I don't think ignoring getting testing will be an issue.

DH univeristy is now saying they'll probably have the lectures in few days a week - which is a change from not opening campus till next year but they've made so many changes and backtracked who knows what it will end up as. He'd like to be back in even traveling on the trains to get there.

I think DS uni. is being wise like the three wise monkeys they have announced zip... I do ask any news he says not, the website says zilch. So I guess we will have to wait and see.

I just did a fabulous dance with a guy in a shop in Sheffield. I was buying a present for my husbands birthday and I stepped over the threashold into an empty shop.

Put hands to mask (I use a running buff) to pull up. He saw me go for the mask. Then I noticed he wasn't wearing one. So I dropped my hands. But by then he was half way through putting his on. I then thought I must do mine. Then we stared at each other. Both wearing masks.

Standoff.

Who blinks first.

I kind of made to take mine off, but could be construed as scratching my nose. Him - same. Then we stared again.

Eventually I put him out of our collective misery and removed mine and smiled. Off his came. And then I spent £80 on knives in serene comfort.

And then we had a laugh about it while I was paying.

And then Rishi payed for lunch, and all was well with the world. £36 for 5 of us to eat more food than was good for us. Job done :-)

SpnBaby1967 · 11/08/2020 15:54

I'm currently sat in baking temperatures, in our big paddling pool because my work laptop wont work as it says it's too hot. I sympathise with it, it is flippin hot. So called my boss and she was like "yep,no worries. Let me know if you manage to get back on".

So, since DH and the kids are off at an actual pool this will do me for cooling and peace and quiet. At some point I'll get out and try my laptop again I suppose.

DominaShantotto · 11/08/2020 15:54

Noticed on my twitter they've at least now found a supplier for transparent face masks for the NHS - so the ridiculous situation of people trying to deliver things like speech therapy in a surgical mask and using videos recorded earlier to demonstrate might be coming to a bit of an end at least.

They look sweaty as fuck though.

justasking111 · 11/08/2020 16:02

@wanderings spot on. If the government told us to tuck our skirts into our knickers to prevent covid it would cost them nothing, wouldn`t work either. I reckon the glove edict will come out in October, again cost them nowt but the added info/sciencey/bollox. will reassure some.

justasking111 · 11/08/2020 16:04

I have a theory, now hear me out, with my awful hay fever and rhinitis with cough I reckon my mucus is pushing the bugs back out again. Prove me wrong Grin

Thisdressneedspockets · 11/08/2020 16:12

Nothingiswrong, love the mask dance.

I can wear one for about five minutes if I keep my breathing slow and controlled. It takes a bit of concentration. After that, the anxiety rises exponentially.

I'll save it for when I'm in a busier space and hope it shows willing. I managed to wear it in a queue today, then the older person in front tucked hers under her nose, so I figured she wasn't too worried about my germs.
I would feel bad wearing a lanyard as I don't have a hidden disability and also I strongly feel people with hidden disabilities shouldn't have to label themselves as such unless they choose to.

countrygirl99 · 11/08/2020 16:16

@justasking111 giggling at the thought of all the "just tuck your skirt in your knickers" memes and threads

forgetthehousework · 11/08/2020 16:23

We went to the shops early today (well, early for us, don't go imagining pre-9.00am) and the heat wasn't too bad but I was conscious of choosing shops with aircon wherever possible, as the face-covering feels soooo much better when I'm cool.

I'm intending to push the boundaries this evening and live a little by having salad AGAIN!

ButterMeCrumpets · 11/08/2020 16:27

I should have antibodies as I have had salad three days in a rowWink

Allshoppingcancelled · 11/08/2020 16:33

I et salad most days, it's a legacy of some hypnotherapy I had a couple of years ago to help me lose weight. I got hypnotised to prefer salad, essentially, and to opt for it in preference for a big plate of fish and chips. Did to work? Oh yes, I eat salad most days. Did I lose weight? Only briefly Hmm

Willow2017 · 11/08/2020 17:00

It's a scientific fact that if you eat lettuce with any meal it cancels out all the other calories.
It's TRUE its TRUE I tell ya.

Allshoppingcancelled · 11/08/2020 17:06

What about if you eat it with wine? Because I think that may be my stumbling block

Taswama · 11/08/2020 17:11

So do you still like fish and chips as well @Allshoppingcancelled ?

Willow2017 · 11/08/2020 17:31

Wine doesn't have any calories silly🤣🤣🤣

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 11/08/2020 17:40

I had salad for lunch. Unfortunately it had crispy roast duck over the top and wine with it! So it’s consoling that at least the wine didn’t have any calories.

Allflightscancelled · 11/08/2020 17:40

I actually don't like fish and chips 😳
