@torydeathdrug are their halls like mini flats of 10 people? I guess the isolation bit is a good way to get to know your flatmates really REALLY well Confused My halls had a lot of people in them, no idea how it would have worked then. It all sounds a bit miserable Sad

TheHighestSardine · 08/08/2020 10:59

Agree with Milky. Your threads regularly look simply mental to the casual observer who believes in epidemiology, because you do have some people who are just "fuck it, I'll do what I like" and no-one daring to tell them that's inappropriate.

PinkFondantFancy · 08/08/2020 11:00

Also, I'm really surprised the young have been so quiet on all of this. I'd be absolutely raging that my a levels, leavers stuff, uni etc. had been so utterly trashed. It's not something you can go back and do properly later. I haven't heard a peep? I saw some sanctimonious BS on Facebook about how if it was something that only affected the young, the older people would be doing absolutely everything in their power to eradicate it. Oh please. Young people have made the most extraordinary sacrifices and noone even acknowledges it

PinkFondantFancy · 08/08/2020 11:01

@MagdaSi I salute your husband and his pants!

Pinkflipflop85 · 08/08/2020 11:07

Checking back in after another mumsnet hiatus.

Saw my nan for the first time in months last week (usually see her every week).

She threw her arms around me and gave me the biggest hug. Said that she's lived her life and if she's going to die she would rather die knowing she hugged her family than live in isolation.

I needed that big hug and I'm annoyed with myself for not going to see her sooner.

Willow2017 · 08/08/2020 11:11

Thanks to kids I now have a pile of bath towels to wash!
Am jealous of ds2 he is off sea swimming with pals. No fair stamps feet
Need a housework fairy in anyone got an email add for them?😉

BlackberryViolet · 08/08/2020 11:11

Off to a NT garden and woodland today. Then back to do some gardening. The cafe is closed but the kiosk is open. Quite surprised the other day, at another NT place, to find that they are doing Rishi specials, as long as you eat on the outside tables as indoors is still closed. Still chuffed to get £18 off the bill. We managed 5 Rishi specials last week, dd1 is planning for 6 this weekGrin. I think she’s trying to tell me that she’s sick of my cooking

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 08/08/2020 11:18

@BeneathTheMilkyTwilight how do you assess risk in general?

Do you live in Sark to remove the risk of a car accident?

WRT communicable disease. I don’t worry about bubonic plague, or cholera, or tsetse or malaria or any other number of nasties. I live in an are with about 400,000 people and roughly 10 active cases.

So yeh... I’ll have a friend in for a cuppa.

Willow2017 · 08/08/2020 11:19

Pink your gran is fab.

Don't be hard on yourself you were doing it for her but now you can make up for lost hugs😄

trappedsincesundaymorn · 08/08/2020 11:32

Hello everyone it's been a while. I'm off to a bbq later for BiL's birthday.

To the 2 two posters that have strayed into the thread I will just say this. No where has anybody said "fuck it I'll do what I want", it's been managing the risks and acting accordingly. For example some posters risks of covid are less severe than the real risk of self harm and worse due to the lock down measures at the start of all this. These threads became a "safe space" to vent frustrations and worries without being told (over and over again), that they should just get on with it because PEOPLE ARE DYING Y'KNOW (complete with shouty capitals).
As for being Covid deniers, well quite frankly that's rubbish. My own mum died of (not with), Covid and the support I got from posters on this thread helped me get through a difficult time...it was the first week of lock down when hysterical people ruled MN and RL.
Please read all the previous threads before making a generalisation, you may be surprised at what you learn about us.

yeOldeTrout · 08/08/2020 11:38

Oh dear, i didn't know these threads had turned political. And Clare whatserface is a 1st class loon.

I will slink off to having no tribe again.

ISaySteadyOn · 08/08/2020 11:38

I have just been out to check on my plants and am excited to report that my chili plants are flowering, but more importantly, my cucumber plant is fruiting! I have never grown them before so this makes me really pleased.

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 08/08/2020 11:42

We’re going to a concert this evening! (Outdoors, and perfectly legal, before any visitor to the thread starts frothing). I can’t wait, I’ve missed live performance so much. In ordinary times I’d go to the theatre at least once a month, and DH and DD both sing in choirs.

After that, I’m on leave for a week and we’re going to visit some of the London museums and Kew Gardens. It’s DD’s birthday on Tuesday, so we’re going away for a night and will visit MIL on the way home.

PinkFondantFancy · 08/08/2020 11:43

Ooh @ISaySteadyOn did you grow them outside or do you have a greenhouse? We get through a lot of cucumbers! Having them fresh from the garden would be amazing

ISaySteadyOn · 08/08/2020 11:44

That sounds lovely, Professor. I hope you will find London welcoming.

Ibake · 08/08/2020 11:49

@yeOldeTrout I don't think they have turned overly political. The odd link but it's not the main content and it's not everyone's view.

In the spirit of the AD threads all opinions are welcome but not all are agreed with. In fact it's one of the last places on MN where respectful and reasoned debate is still practiced.

Personally I'm not overly interested in the politics but am very interested in home grown cucumbers!

ISaySteadyOn · 08/08/2020 11:49

@PinkFondantFancy, a neighbour friend gave me a plant she'd grown from seed and I put it in a good spot. She also gave me tomato plants which are thriving but no fruit yet. In fairness, I gave her 2 of our sunflowers and a carte blanche to help herself to our herbs if she wanted.

I am not sure when one harvests cucumbers so if anyone knows, please tell me as I am now going to be keeping an eye out.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 08/08/2020 11:51

My strawberries have gone mad (in the tunnel) and have enticed every slug in Scotland keeping them off my courgettes... pretty sure I’d have preferred it the other way.

My cucumbers and chillis succumbed to late frosts (twice 🤬) but my cantaloupe melon is looking promising!

My kids come home today. Peace shattered, but normality resumed. I’m sure like all of you -
Love the silence the first few days then miss them like mad.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/08/2020 11:55

@torydeathdrug

(but you might like to be aware how the thread looks to an outsider)

^ or not!

Waving to everyone - busy weekend - but nothing exciting ... dh is off to his mum’s to do some emergency plumbing, I will finish decorating the kitchen.

Have completely failed to find anywhere the children can go swimming but succeeded in booking eye tests & ‘flu jabs ... win some/lose some.

We have three (!!) Rishi deals booked for next week ... including a very posh one with dd1 cos she’s worked so hard this year & deserves it. Some of the uni regulations for this coming year have come through - starts with a 7/14 day household isolation on site before term starts then follows up with a ban on fun & most of the option modules cancelled. If she hadn’t already had a year out she’d defer & keep working (loves her job) - young ppl really have been fucked by this, I don’t see much recognition of that from those who benefit most! I imagine she’s going to be spending a lot of time socialising with non uni friends.

That sounds appallingly depressing Sad

I only hit it off with one flatmate out of the 6 of us in our flat and not with the 6 opposite either.

I made a random friend in freshers week in the union. Her housemates skeddadled and left her and she randomly came up to me and 20 years later, we are still good friends.

She told me which house on campus she lived in and I was bored and called round. I interrupted a phonecall to her mum where she wanted to leave because she was lonely and steuggling to meet people. She wasn't in the main halls due to needing a wheel chair adapted house. I didn't know how close she was to dropping out until her mum thanked me at the end of the year as she was packing up.

18 year olds need their peers and to find their tribe. How many young people will have their self esteem crushed by these over-zealous policies that stop them getting the informal support that young humans need. How many will think they are failiures because they couldn't handle the bones that institutions are throwing them?

Polkadotties · 08/08/2020 11:56

Morning All. Went to Costco this morning to bulk buy some meat. Walking round in a mask was horrible, so hot and uncomfortable

TheOrchidKiller · 08/08/2020 11:56

starts with a 7/14 day household isolation on site before term starts

Crikey! I really hope it goes well for students in this situation. I would've found that hard at that age with a tiny group of people I didn't know & nowhere to escape to if it got a bit too much.

@trappedsincesundaymorn
I'm sorry about your mum, I hadn't realised that had happened to you.Flowers

I'm off to defy the hot flushes. Stocked up on ice pops last night.Smile

BeneathTheMilkyTwilight · 08/08/2020 12:00

I'm not going to froth about anything, and I shall leave you in peace. Thanks to those who answered my questions civilly.

Glenthebattleostrich · 08/08/2020 12:03

Hello, hope you don't mind me joining in!

Gardening chat, sensible risk assessment and no judgement. Sounds like my kinda thread!

I've discovered the joys of gardening during lockdown and have turned my gardens from a weed infested wilderness to pretty and useful spaces. And I'm growing tomatoes, blueberries and apples. Next year I'll be planting raspberries, strawberries and carrots too. I'm rediculously excited about the 20 tomatoes growing on my plants, watching them obsessively for ripening.

Today we are off to a local brewery / gin distillers who have some tables and music and pizza. It's lovely and outdoors and everyone is sensible and nice.

Flappergasted · 08/08/2020 12:10

Shift up if I may join? Oh I have found my peoples.

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 08/08/2020 12:15

Sorry about your mum, @trappedsincesundaymorn. Flowers
