Plus, what on earth is the point of a trade off between schools and pubs?

It might make sense if we were still trying the flatten the f-ing curve, because opening up the possibility of transmission in schools could be offset my reducing the possibility of transmission in fun places. But as we seem now to be going for outright eradication, it makes no sense at all.

I'm sorry, I realise I've broken radio silence for a series of rants. But honestly. So much bullshit, and we're expected to swallow it wholesale. And when we don't, people on dementory threads accuse us of being 'thick as shit'. (Really love, that wouldn't actually be you then, would it?)

BogRollBOGOF · 02/08/2020 12:17

There I am getting the gist using my A-level French, then google offers to translate anyway.

It's a small study from the USA March to April. They are concluding that because they found the virus in the swabs in the u5 group that they are high risk of spreading. Now my GCSE biology (but it was an A) is also pretty rusty, but there has been a lot since then about the T cells in young children being an effective defence. So from a small study that's comparatively old compared to the pace of developments, they are trying to reach a big conclusion from a basic observation. Given that u5s have been back in nurseries as normal in the UK and Europe since then, super spreading has had more than enough opportunity to become obvious since May/ June.

monkeytennis97 · 02/08/2020 12:18

@Dowser the amount is 10-100 times more than older children or adults

BogRollBOGOF · 02/08/2020 12:19

I can't be thick as shit because I can understand poor science reporting in another language Grin

monkeytennis97 · 02/08/2020 12:20

@Allflightscancelled As a teacher I would rather have more limited community transmission with pubs shut if I am going to be exposed PPE less to over 1200 kids. Although I think I'm not really the target market on this thread so will pop off now.

Polkadotties · 02/08/2020 12:22

I haven’t looked closely at the numbers recently as tbh I’m completely bored of it, are deaths increasing?
Does it matter if the infection rate is increasing if deaths aren’t?

dingit · 02/08/2020 12:24

Funny that. My dh who is very compliant and is 52 also said they can fuck off Grin

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 02/08/2020 12:25

But as we seem now to be going for outright eradication, it makes no sense at all.

Seems to be mission creep and some sage scientist and others calling for it - however that would only work if you limited everyone from rest of the world coming in or found a way to ensure they aren't infected.

I think that's Hong Kong problems it's been letting flight crews and shipping crews in and letting them mingle with locals and now they have a resurgence though there are poltical overtones as well.

Track and trace - faster tests maybe easier tests like spit tests being trialed currently would all make more sense I think and looking at the improved treatments being found and used and making sure they were widley known and avalibale to all hospitals.

TheOrchidKiller · 02/08/2020 12:28

DH is 51. That's not going to wash.

Yes, it is all speculation at the moment, & as usual the papers love a worst-case-scenario-zombie-apocalypse story.

It's easy to feel dragged down by all of these stories & possible situations right now. It's the knowledge that they have imposed restrictions that makes any threat of further measures- realistic or completely wacky- seem massive & depressing.

Trying to keep calm.

ISaySteadyOn · 02/08/2020 12:30

Actually, my question is do public health officials think that humans don't have immune systems anymore? Or that they don't work?

Fair enough - I'd prioritise schools over hospitality industry and all the jobs and lively hoods and supportive supply chains therein.

I have school aged kids and want them educated and able to get on in life - but my family aren't making livehoods in these areas and I don't have to look at unemployment figures and tax returns.

I'm am really hoping schools are open in Janauary and GCSE exams then go ahead rather than have pubs open.

Someone we know quit her job in Mountain Warehouse when furlough came to an end. Not shielding or anything.

DominaShantotto · 02/08/2020 12:50

I threatened to one of the junior school governors that if they didn't open in September I was chaining myself to the school railings. Her comment was just "make sure you pick the right side or you'll be stuck with whatever year groups they DO let come in"

DominaShantotto · 02/08/2020 12:52

It's scorching here - knobhead neighbour is gammoning off in his garden full blast (racist, sexist shit like normal and he's right cos he's telling it like it is etc - you get the idea), DH has the entire sofa sitting cross legged playing some stupid shooter on the Xbox and the dog's got the less comfy sofa and is farting... so I'm stuck in the bloody conservatory again. I swear I'm buying a comfier sofa for in here at some point.

This is what I think.

justasking111 · 02/08/2020 13:09

@Allflightscancelled

I think a lot of this is scaremongering by the government, like they have often done at key points like sunny Bank Holidays. All designed to scare us into doing as we're told and being good compliant little citizens.

Well the latest idea, locking down over 50s. Don't make me laugh. I'm 58 and I'm NOT being made to lockdown again. They can fuck off.

Over 50`s are big earners so tax loss would be an issue. 50 + well how many of us or clubbing or boozing at weekends. My wonderful boozy weekends finished with engagement, saving for house, marriage and kids. My teenager was out two days ago, had a pizza and beer in a beer garden with a friend whose parents had been sensible. Come on they admit 90 odd % of us are being good little bunnies whatever age we are. The 10% that shrug, well that was always going to happen whatever the case.

Ear buds are your friend @DominaShantotto I just hook up to netflix, BBCiplayer, and tune out the world so go sit in your garden and be oblivious to the world.
Blobby10 · 02/08/2020 13:13

I'm 51 and have no intention of locking myself up for anyone! I've had to work 5 days a week through the first lockdown just trying to keep our engineering firm going - if I'm not there the whole place will have to be closed and 20 people will lose their jobs although most of them are over 50 too!! We have had half of them working 21 out of normal 38 hours throughout (paid in full) to keep our customers on side and complete their essential orders. We would lose all this goodwill overnight if the Government carry out this stupid and ill thought out idea.

DominaShantotto · 02/08/2020 13:16

I'm watching the F1 and they've all got facemasks on - I've had to put the subtitles on. It is funny though watching that moment where someone's obviously shouted down the earpiece that they're not exactly 2m apart and them quickly repositioning though. That is the only thing amusing me much on telly these days.

DominaShantotto · 02/08/2020 13:19

It's just come to mind - it's the Covid TimeWarp

It's just a dart to the left,
And then a swerve to the right,
With your magic mask
Pull the elastics tight...

I ran out of inspiration at this point.

okiedokieme · 02/08/2020 13:21

If we have already had it, surely we should be allowed to do whatever we want (respecting social distancing) I'm just getting so fed up with the martyrs posting on my Facebook feed about everything cancelled until next spring. Just having a bad day!

iamapixie · 02/08/2020 13:22

Late to the party but hello again.
I commented on the very first thread. I sometimes wonder what happened to some of the people who posted a lot early on and then have disappeared over time. Obv there was the horribleness with Lilac - Hope she's OK - , but there were others too who vanished.
I wonder if some just escaped social media generally.
